Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

how late is it?  The tennis is still going in new york but I thought it would be night time there by now?

*realises California and New York are not in the same time zone, but you know, whatever*

Yabbit - you are on the money with your thinking about how the process works! I have been doing internet research and it agrees with you :)

Hah! I'm smarter than the Internet cuz I thunk it out on my tod!!

AC, do I remember reading somewhere that you stopped washing your face a while back? Are you still? Do you use anything at all (water, moisturiser or oil of any kind, etc)? Coz I kinda think that by default I have stopped using facewash, along with the shampoo...

Does the face thing work the same as the hair thing? (ie facewashes strip the oil, so face produces more, so facewash is necessary therefore if facewash use stops face gradually normalises in terms of oil production?)

I really am becoming a dirty hippy!

I started washing my face with baking soda several months ago. It's the ONLY thing that has ever worked in my life to clear up my face (mostly). Over time, I pretty much tried every face wash, face wash medicines, not washing my face, washing my face with just water..etc. Baking soda keeps my face mostly clear until my menstrual cycle decides to break me out a bit anyway. If I'm in the shower I use this squeeze bottle that has water + baking soda, but if I'm just washing my face, I just dab some baking soda on wet face, scrub, and rinse. Works for me, so I'm sticking with it!

P doesn't use any soap/body wash, and he loves just using water. He's done that for a couple years now, but I still use soap.

i've mentioned in this thread the lip/hair oiliness decrease when we do not use product, no?

yes?

I think chapstick is partly preventative. Certainly when I was in Russia, slathering it on before going into the cold and wind really helped keep dry lips under control. Hydration can only do so much if you're being frozen by the weather :)

I've read that the companies put a specific ingredient in chapstick that will dry out your lips on purpose so you have to keep using it. A lot of natural companies like the boast that they don't use the ingredient but to be honest, they all dry out my lips and rarely moisturize- natural, "natural" or not.

yeah, idk about the mystical evil ingredients that are supposedly in some of these things. it's possible one of the common lubricants in chapstick is cheap and doesn't last all that long, meaning you need to reapply often. that or the lubricant dries, feels crusty, which gives the sensation that your lips are dry again.

i've also heard that there are numbing agents in tearless shampoo and dandruff shampoo. doubt that one too...

There is SLS in most shampoo and soap, body wash, etc which does strip your hair and skin and dry it out though.

Ahhh yep I used to use baking soda too! It works wonders for zits, but I have very dry skin and using it on a regular basis as my facewash just dried it out (and ultra dry makes my skin break out again, weirdly). So I switched to Angels on Bare Skin by Lush which has worked really really well to balance my skin out all year, so it's in a good state at the moment. I've run out though, so have just been using water/ water on a soft face cloth to clean my face and then still using coconut oil as a moisturiser. I have also been washing my face less often, sometimes only once a day instead of twice. So far, after about a week and a half, my skin seems pretty happy and normal... I hope it continues! I am quite enjoying the idea of cutting back my personal maintenance costs and hassles (less crap to buy, use and carry when travelling!)

I'm still going to use soap on my body though. And toothpaste. And baking soda deodorant.

Hairwise, I've hit the 2 week mark! I did the cider vinegar rinse a couple of days ago, and it made the gunky feeling at the back of my head go away for the day and felt nice to use in the shower, but by the end of the day all of my hair felt MORE oily and lank and I just wanted to go back to water washing! I also felt really paranoid that I smelt like a bag of chips. Haha so my hair already likes it's plain ol' water. I did a normal water wash last night and it feels nice again :) A bit dry on the ends so I rubbed a tiny bit of coconut oil through them before bed.

MPAGL gave me a hug last night and rested his face on my hair, then asked how long it had been since I washed it. I said "oh no...does it stink?!" He said "no no no it really doesn't, I mean it doesnt smell like it used to but it smells fine, I was just curious" so I told him 2 weeks and he yelled "TWO WEEKS?! Holy crap, if I hadn't washed my hair in 2 weeks it'd be HORRIBLE, wow..."

I think he was impressed :)

sounds like it's going good, theo!

I also feel like a dirty hippie because I would only wash my face once a day anyway and often just with water...

I'm not planning on getting rid of soap though...

That's awesome though oww. My twice a day face washing comes from what was drilled into me from puberty onward at school: "YOU ARE GROWING OH MY THAT MEANS YOU ARE PIMPLY AND SMELLY AND YUCKY AND YOU DON'T REALISE IT BUT OTHER PEOPLE DO SO YOU MUST WASH YOUR FACE EVERY DAY AND SHOWER AND WEAR DEODORANT AND OH GOD DON'T TELL ANYONE WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR PERIOD OR EVERYONE WILL HATE YOU!!!!!1!!!one!!!"

Yea, it sticks. I'm sure the fact that I wash my face twice a day is the only reason I need to.

yeah, I guess I've never really had oily or 'problem' skin so have only really washed my face when I shower.  I'd also probably wash more if I ever wore makeup, but I don't  : )
I do have dry skin though but that's more on  my hands/arms/legs : /

I'm sure this is true for so many things we do  : /

I'm glad someone said it! i was kind of embarassed to say it, but i dont use soap either. and my skin has cleared up tremendously. i still use soap before i cook and after i use the potty but in the shower i just use a washcloth. :)

my hair has started to get oily half way down the hair and feels mank there now.  But the scalp oiliness is much less.  I guess the oil is just travelling down the hair.  Nice.

I'm not gonna stop using soap/shower gel.  But I don't wash my face every day (eeep, is that bad!).  Definitely after the gym because it's all sweaty, but if I'm not at the gym then I don't always bother.

N still hasn't noticed my lack of shampooing or my lack of deodourant.  I nearly told him on Saturday abuot not washing my hair, but I decided that it would be more amusing for me to find out when he finally realises on his own.

See, I like that! I think that's a good way to be :) I'm getting there.

I don't really wash myself very well with soap. I just have dr. bronners. mainly for shaving, but every once in a while I actually use it washing/shower wise.
Sometimes I wash my face with it, but not really that often.
