Hair washing
Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!
I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.
P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.
I suppose Guy is more appropriate than Gentleman-friend or Manthing :P
Or indeed Boytoy.
He's significantly older than me so Boytoy isn't quite right haha.
+1 for Manthing......but only if I get to him that to his face. Although, he'd probably like it.
You just know he would. He'd probably then do the spank-cat impression again, or similar :P
Funnily enough, the guy I suppose I'm seeing (really need to come up with a VW alias for him)
Only 'suppose' ? ; )
yah if your hair is feeling better though, your oily tunnel must have been pretty short!
Yea haha, pretty much no-one outside of internet land knows about it so it's still a "suppose" and on the down low. Which I quite like :)
My hair is totaly NOT feeling better, still well within the oily tunnel, he's just a total weirdo!
vh - UGH flatmate issues suck so much, really hope that when your mum comes you guys find a new better awesome place and everything clicks into good mode again. You're not gross. It's her issue, and it sounds like she has plenty.
AC- Your hair looks great in those pics! How long has it been since shampooing for you now?

Thanks. It is still oily, but manageable. I'm hopeful. It's been about...3 weeks? 3 1/2 maybe.
That's awesome, it's cool how we are all at slightly different stages of the process so I can see what's happening for others further into it. That gives me hope too!
Thanks guys! i'm gonna talk and try not to yell at her tonight.
so my hair i definitely much better. I am not imagining it.
I did a WO wash today and yes it still feels oily but no where near as bad as it did 4 or 5 days ago. I think as the oil/sebum/whatevs is working the way down my hair it's making it feel better too. It's at the stage now where I'm not totally embarrassed by the state of my hair. A week or so more and I'll probably be able to wear it down again (I hope).
I just did a bit of web research on it, and it all seems to be going as it should.
I did notice yesterday that there was rank oil goo stuck on my hair brush. Nice. So I just cleaned my hairbrush out and carried on using it. It's apparently to be expected.
I really have hope for this.
eta: when I say my hair is feeling much better, I mean better than when I last posted, not better than when I was shampooing my hair.
YAY for coming out of the oily tunnel! Mine is just ultra gross now, but I'm a bit behind everyone so you give me hope :)
My hair is weird! At the roots in one centralised spot at the top/back/middle of my head it's really oily and stuff, but the roots all around the front/sides/nape of neck are fine, look and feel normal! And to make it even weirder, the ends of my hair have gone all crazy frizzy! I have very fine straight hair...frizzy is not really something I've ever experienced. I just gave it a brush to try and spread some of the oiliness through the rest of it and maybe calm down the ends...
Thinking of trying a cider vinegar rinse on the oily roots. But in general even though it's feeling gross at the moment it's still looking fine when tied up, no one has noticed a thing and I think it looks quite good. (the blue has faded but not as much as it looks like, it's just really dull coz it's night time and electric light rather than the daylight in my other pics)
My hair, brushed out, with boofy ends:

Theo, now you know where most of the sebaceous glands in your scalp are, is all. It's oilier there cuz that's where the "well" is.
Your hair doesn't even look like "it needs washing."
And I love your little "angelic" smile. I bet you were a handful at age 3...and thirteen...and whatever age you are now.
What's the timeline for hair recovery (like, what's it like in week 1, etc? and what week is the grossest?)?
What's the timeline for hair recovery (like, what's it like in week 1, etc? and what week is the grossest?)?
I'm close to a month now and still recovering. The bottom of my hair is great, but top back still oily. Not as much, but still only comfortable wearing it half down. Week 2-2.5 is maybe grossest. I dunno. Week 1 it will just be starting to over produce oils.
Theo - re: manthing, you should quote Anchorman and call him "my peer and my gentleman lover".

week one- oilier but still kinda normal
weeks 2-3 were grossest for me. now i'm at 2 months (i think) and it's fine. it's been fine for about 2 weeks. so at about a month and a half you should be good. but i have medium length super curly hair so it might be different for you depending on your hair type.
I've tried no shampoo before but I got horrible dandruff. It was not pretty so I'm reluctant to try again.
On a related note, I've gone a couple years now without using soap. I use a little bit of Dr bronners on my pits and privates but everything else I just scrub with a washcloth. I used to have major problems with dry skin but since giving up soap my skin has been 100% happy and healthy.
I'm not even playing, but I have been sitting here thinking about the oiliness factor and I think I get it, why it's so extreme and then not. If you've used shampoo all your life, that strips the oils etc, right? So of course your scalp is used to over-producing oil to keep itself balanced because it knows (so to speak) that you're gonna wash it off. Once you stop using soap, all that excess is there, and it takes time for your oil glands to get the message (or maybe they just don't trust us). After a while they reduce production when the new system doesn't change.
You probably knew all that, yeah. But I just wanted to think out loud.
I'm in week 2 nowww. I think it feels worse than it looks.
I feel like it feels worse if I water wash it. I've only done that once I think.
yeah, I feel ok and I'm 2.5 weeks since last shampoo.
still a bit heavy/flat, but not really oily.
also, shell, we don't get to check who is the least observant between N and mr oww because he saw the photos I had taken on our computer and asked me why I'd been taking photos of my hair so I told him. Was no biggie though, as suspected, he hadn't noticed anything different and thinks it looks fine.
Yabbit - you are on the money with your thinking about how the process works! I have been doing internet research and it agrees with you :)
And yes :P I was a giant brat at both 3 and 13. I'm totally a grown up normal person now though ::)
Catski - I like it! Haha I love that movie. MPAGL for short?
yabbit/oww, i think chapstick works the same? at least that's how i hear people become "addicted" to it.
