Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

sweet thread ; )

I've been 'water washing' since Saturday and so far I'm feeling oilier than I ever have but I have heaps of hope that with a bit more time my hair will adjust...

When I have it tied up I think it looks fine, it's just not fluffy like it normally is, and it looks a bit mank when I have it loose.

I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

yup, just like that.

I pretty much did the water-only thing for a couple months but because I was in the hospital for heart stuff and didn't have good shampoo so i went without. haha. my hair was consistently oily after the first week though and didn't lessen over time like people say it does. Who knows though? maybe it is dependent on hair length.. at the time my hair was to my hips. now it's right past my shoulders and I could try it again and see.

I am always slightly confused about men and shampoo. If they have relatively short hair, like such that it doesn't get in their eyes, I don't see the need for shampoo anyways. To me, shampoo is to keep longish hair from getting outta control frizzy or greasy. Maybe for dandruff if needed.

I'm to where I wash mine every 4 days or so with shampoo/conditioner. I'm slowly easing into not washing. Because I don't want my hair to be very gross.

It is pretty gross! ha. I don't think it's dirty, it's just so oily! but not scary.

P was just informing me that I shouldn't scrubbing..that I should just rinse, and "run my fingers through my hair." ummm, that's not so easy with long hair.

Sog, did you only do it for 2 months, or longer? I think it's supposed to take longer than that. : \

Ahaha. Nooo. I used to wash my hair less often, I started washing it every night though so my hair seriously needs to adapt to this agian.

i tried the water-only thing once, and i didn't get my scalp very clean though my hair dried out.

I have dry, frizzy hair, so pretty much everything makes it drier. I just use shampoo/conditioner that dries it out the least while still cleaning. I got some dandruff shampoo from Target, but I find TJ's citrus shampoo actually does a better job with dandruff. Oh well!

I was my hair once a week, because it gets so dry and because I refuse to straighten it more often.

DO IT!

yeah, my hair is a lot shorter than it used to be but still has a fair amount of length and a lot of thickness!  I'm gonna stick with scrubbing.

oh wow I would hate to wash my hair every day!  I have to do it more often than I used to because of going to the gym every day, but still, if I don't get too sweaty, I don't wash it.
I do kinda miss only having to wash my hair once a week though

I feel like with the water I am going to have to wash it even more often though, at least at first ...

If you water washed it with extra hot water, wouldn't that melt the oil off?

washing it with very hot water also dries your hair out and strips shine, nutrients and stuff too, though.

Good point.  Would finishing with a cold rinse restore some of the shine?

what kinda hot are we talking here?
I always have my shower pretty much as hot as I can handle...

Hmm, I guess that would be the hot I'm talking about then.. I always take slightly cold showers. It just makes me feel more awake, and it makes your hair shiny cause it closes the hair follicle (not sure how the two are connected, but this is what i've read haha). Showering in hot water makes me want to be in there forever and sit on the block in the wall and sleep, which i've done. I just take baths if I wanna be in hot water and snooze.

urgh.
I just take even shorter showers in summer, not colder ones.
Hope I haven't been munting my hair all these years by washing it in too much heat?!

Does anyone wash their hair with apple cider vinegar? I've been meaning to try it. Right now I use this organic lemongrass shampoo I bought in France, I love how it makes my hair smell.

I've never tried the cider vinegar thing (i would be put off by my own hair smelling like vinegar..) but I used to wash it with beer all the time and it works what i imagine would be the same wonders.

I wash my hair 2 times a week using shampoo and conditioner.  I find if I don't use conditioner it feels like straw.

I use shampoo, and conditioner when I remember/have any kicking about, but I don't wash my hair all that often. XD Only when it starts getting annoyingly greasy. Which, since the unshorn bits of my head are bleach-blonde, takes a while.

I have two kinds of shampoo in rotation - Lush Karma Komba and Original Source pear and avocado. My stepsis works in a salon so oftentimes I'll condition my hair by rinsing out her not-quite-empties.

When I was a kid I used the cider-vinegar rinse at the end. You put just a couple of tablespoons of vinegar in the bottom of a plastic cup and fill up with water. Use it as the final rinse; rub it in, then rinse out with cool water. My hair isn't nearly as oily as it was when I was young but if I don't wash it with shampoo or natural bar soap at least once a week it has no volume at all.
