Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

I did a WO wash today and then blow dried my hair and straightened it (as I always did when I wasn't WO washing) and my hair looked much better and felt much better.  I even wore my hair down today, that's how happy I was with it.

When I was shampoo washing my hair I always felt it was nicer when blow dried/straightened - just smoother and shinier.  During my WO washing I haven't been drying/straightening my hair, sor some reason, so maybe that's why I haven't been happy with it.

N didn't mention anything about my hair today, even though it's the first time I've worn it down all day since WO washing.  I love how unobservant he is!

butting in about my face....(washing it with baking soda)

last week I was breaking out pretty badly and I was about to give up....but this morning I examined my face thoroughly and it looks nice....greasy, but not more than normal I don't think....I think my skin was just going through withdrawl....

erin - Are you talking about the hairline getting oily if you don't wash your hair or do you not wash your face?  I only wash my face if I've had an extremely hot/dirty day and all of me is grimy - like a handful of times a year.

I haven't started not washing my hair because I was waiting to see how everyone else got along first.  I have a lot of old liquid soap that I've been using up as shampoo.  When it's gone, I'm thinking about not buying shampoo.  I'd expect my hair to reach a happy medium like my face.

wow, has it really been SIX weeks since I started this thing? Daaaanng....

The greasiness has already subsided significantly!! ....it's gone back to feeling only slightly greasy at the end of a long day, if that, and it still looks great. :)

But Evergreen is right--the condition of Your water plays a huge role... Last week, James and I stayed at some friends' place in Atlanta, We used their shower (Atlanta city water), and my head itched and my hair felt kinda gross once it dried.... it didn't feel good again until I showered back home. All Our water comes from a well on the property, and I know that it's really clean and awesome. ...I'm sure that the water is rich with minerals from the red clay/soil around here, but that only seems to benefit Us when drinking, watering Our gardens, and showering with it.

ahhhh, water-only WIN!

One minor downside:
Between the work I do outside here at the farm, and the work I'm doing outside at the haunted trail job, my entire body has been getting super dirty and stinky by the end of each day. LOTS of dust in my hair + water only = a clean-yet-not-pleasant-smelling head. I'm just...not entirely fond of smelling slightly like a wet dog when I get out of the shower.

I sort of miss having fragrant hair....... but I suppose I could try some essential oils or lemon juice if I wanted to add perfume to my hair, huh?

no, I'm still washing my hair - I just hijacked this thread after taking AC's suggestion of washing my face with baking soda rather than my old face soap.....

I have a greasy face like a teenager...

nothing much to add other than I'm still rocking the water washing.  Coming up towards five weeks and it's feeling a bit less heavy/flat than it has been.  Still probably wouldn't be confident having my hair down, but I'm hoping that'll change in the next few weeks...

sounds like the baking soda is making your skin happy, Erin, that's awesome : )

I MIGHT do this again. might. because I have my hair up 95% of the time anyway until it is long and lustrous again. but i am worried about the flaky scalp and dull/less shiny thing. smell doesn't bother me, and if it did, like CW said I'd just use lemon/essential oils. I don't know how worth it it is for me to go WO though 'cause I just use a basic shampoo bar from lush, and shower 1-2 times a week anyway.

Put a couple of drops of essential oil in a glass of warm water when you're done washing, then pour this over your scalp and rub in. I suggest jasmine oil.

I have WO washed twice since my last post, and my hair is definitely looking much better and feeling much better.
I'll be doing another WO wash tomorrow and I'm hoping I'll be able to wear my hair down for work on Friday.

I'm currently wearing my hair down (at home) and it's feeling good - not great, but good.  And it's pretty shiny.

It's definitely getting better - especially compared to how it was feeling prior to my last post.  Eeeeeeeee!!  I'm excited for when it really is good enough to wear down to work / when I'm going out.

My hair up for the ball last weekend (I think at 4 weeks since last shampoo?) Held up by my hair lemonade, and not looking gross or greasy!

Thanks! Yea I'm pretty happy with how my hair is looking shampoo-less :) It's darker than it used to be, doesn't necessarily feel as nice, but it looks shiny and clean so that works for me :)

And thanks oww, same ball :) I might put some more up in the images thread :D
