Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

They just opened a Lush store here in town, I haven't been in yet because I'm assuming I probably can't afford their stuff, just like I could never afford the Body Shop. But I want to go in and see the stuff because y'all talk about it.
At first I thought Lush had taken over Body Shop's storefront but I then realised BS is still there.

I did that...the solid shampoo actually looks like a pretty good deal. I am interested in the solid deoderants too. Do you get the samples in the store, or ordering online only? I only have a shower so bath salts type things are unfortunately no good to me... :(

You most definitely can get them in stores, but if you order something online you could probably put a note in your order that you would love some samples of their vegan products.

I love the Lush shampoo bars! They last a really long time I find.

I tried the whole no wash thing, but my hair just got REALLY greasy and dandruffy. It was gross. My BF was so relieved when I finally broke down and used shampoo. Hahaha.

This reminds me that I need to get to Lush now that I have a little more money. I've been using crappy non-vegan .75 cent shampoo from Aldi.

I just really enjoy washing my hair with shampoo--it's so refreshing! I tend to change brands a lot because  :-[ I tend to buy it by the smell. But I realise we are being "tooken" re: price, because all run-of-the-mill bath gels and shampoos start off with exactly the same base, which is pale grey and hideously ugly. Then they add colour and scent and maybe a few extracts to make it nicer. (I saw this on ARTE, Wass, so you know it's true!  :-D)
But since I know we're being way overcharged (and the name-brands are the worst offenders), I'd like to try the solid shampoo bars. I have washed my hair with Castile/Marseilles bar soap and it worked well but the "fad" for those soaps is passing here so I want to try Lush.

Just wondering...how long do the Lush bars last?  I'm interested, but I don't know if I can bring myself to pay $13.50 for a 55g bar (plus shipping) when the shampoo/conditioner I normally get is only about $3.50 for a 400ml bottle (it's the same stuff the NZ girls were talking about earlier in this thread).  My hair is shoulder-length and I wash it every 2-3 days.  The 400ml bottles of shampoo last about 4-6 months.

the first lush bar I ever tried (before I started switching around every shower) lasted me a little over a year. I had hair past my hips then and washed it every 3-4 days. If you do decide to buy one, I recommend lathering it up in your hands before applying (rather than running the bar itself through your hair)- since a lot of their bars have fragments of herbs/flowers in them it makes it easier to distribute. Also make sure the container you store it in doesn't have any excess water in it- if you're storing it in a wet container, it will get mushy from absorbing the water and you'll end up using way way more than you need to and drying your hair out.

*sigh*  I have to wash my hair every day.  Except on weekends.  One of the non-cool things about my job.  :-\

I finally got to the Lush store today. Man, are we in trouble. Because they have the kind of stuffs I love. I came away with 2 shampoo bars (so I could get the tin for freebies; yeah, I know, it would have been cheaper just to buy the tin and now I have one bar with no tin to put it into). Next month, solid deoderant, and maybe some soap. I see they also have perfumes.
But--no free samples. And they've been open just over a month.  :(

yes!!! I store my extra bars in reused mint tins and tiny tupperware and the like. I've never tried their solid deoderant, let me know how you like it next month! If you decide to try soap, "Karma" is amazing. They make a lot of different things (perfume, lotion, shampoo, bath bombs) with the same Karma scent but I think the soap form is the most lovely and least overbearing. Did you ask for a sample? I don't think I've ever walked out of a store without one. Maybe this store just isn't "established" enough..?

BECAUSE IT GETS GROSS. SHUDDUP.

On the topic of Lush deodorants - I've heard great things about aramaco (or something like that) from anyone I've ever asked about their deodorant.

Some jobs require you to shower in and shower out before entering and leaving. Don't know if that's the case for you or not.

I used one of the Lush bars yesterday, in Spanish it's called "Like New". I looked at the US page and it's new, called "Stimulating Spice." I followed SoG's advice about rubbing it on my hands, not my hair. The suds felt odd the first wash but my hair was really dirty and sweaty so I gave it another go. I like the way it leaves my hair once it's dry, it feels natural, like my hair did when I was a kid.
I also got a "Jumping Juniper" bar for horrible oily greasy days. That one made me laugh because the Spanish name for it is "El Fairy"--like some kind of flamenco singer...also here "Fairy" is a dishwashing liquid that is famous as a greasebuster, like Dawn in the US.
