Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

I did notice a faint odour of poo when you came to visit......

ok so just gotta ask, are any men doing this?  Or is it just the women walking around without washing their hair and smelling like baby poo?

Good point, dprince... maybe men are just too vain???  ;)

I think us women just know how to say "What the hell, let's give this a whirl."

I told my bf about this actually and he did it for 2 months. His hair is pretty thick and wavy and it really wasn't noticeable that he didn't use shampoo. He used to use shampoo about once every 4 or 5 days so it wasn't as big a stretch as it would be for someone who washed daily (such as myself). It was a little more oily and dandruff-y but not a big deal. He just washed it with shampoo for the first time last week after going in the ocean and getting covered with sand and salt.

Sorry if my earlier post came across as mean or rude, didn't mean it to, I just thought the post about smelling like baby poo was just funny.  I have read the post that AC has put on about P, so besides P have any other men tried this?  I ask only because I may want to try WO washing but would like other men's opinion on the subject.  I have gone now 4 days WO and my hair now is just soooo oily, flat no body, and has actually gotten darker.  I used to have light brown almost blonde hair, now it is dark brown.  Any others?

It wasn't mean! It will definitely take some time (man or woman) for your hair to adjust (or not)..so I guess you just have to decide if you want to stick with it for a while? You could try rubbing the starch in it. I think hh still has short hair?

dprince - If you don't want to be 100% anti-hair treatment, you rub in a bit of cornstarch.  Or try whatever flour you have on hand.  I use potato starch, but I think all-purpose white flour would probably also work.  Dip your fingers in the starch/flour of your choice and rub your roots.  It doesn't take much.  You may need to lightly brush it a bit afterward to blend in the lightness of the starch/flour if you get too much.  I do that whenever needed and a weekly WO rinse.

I'm over a month into no shampooing.  I really like it.  I'm going to keep on keeping on.  My hair looks so much more full than it did before.

This thread has inspired me to wash my hair less often.  I was washing every 2 days, but I started stretching it out to every 3 or 4...basically whenever it starts looking/feeling gross.  I've gone up to 8 days without washing.  It just depends how much I sweat or how much my baby sucks on my hair or whatever. :)

dprince-
How often were you washing your hair before?  Maybe you need to wean yourself off shampoo instead of quitting all at once.

I left 3 or 4 days between WO wash this time and then blow dried and straightened my hair yesterday and am being brave and wearing it down today at work.  I think it looks good.  Maybe a little greasy but not much.

I asked N how my hair was looking yesterday and I could tell he wanted to say something bad but couldn't because it did look ok.  He's not impressed with my hippie non-shampooing.  Ha!

He still hasn't commented about my lack of deodorant, so I guess he's not noticed that.

haha N does win the lack of observation skills prize.

You mentioning hippie non-shampooing reminds me we ran into a friend of mine at the supermarket on Saturday, she was doing promo/sampling work for an organic food company, handing out little samples of these nut/fruit snack things.  We had a chat for a while and she was saying how people are surprised this stuff tastes good because they have this hippie/twigs and leaves image in their mind when you say something is 'organic'.  And then she said 'just because you like something that's a bit hippie doesn't mean you need to stop washing!'....
haha, or maybe it does.....
