Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

yeah, it looks great oww.  Theo's also looked great whenever it was I last bumped into her in town. (2 weeks ago?).
I was a bit jealous that you guys have managed to make the WO washing work.  My hair just didn't like it.

BUT since my attempt my hair has been fine with only washing once every 6 or 7 days. I used to wash it every 4 or 5 days and towards the end it would be pretty mank, whereas now it's not too bad.  So yeah, it's ended up being a positive experience for me.  I don't think I'd try WO washing as a permanent thing again though.

I haven't got my hair wet in over a month

And it looks DARN good

eta.
But apparently people I don't know know me as the gross girl. Ahaha. Awesome. Like my friend was hanging out with this kid, her cell phone background is a picture of her and I, he was like "Hey isn't that Sarah, that gross girl?"
Win.

That's really cool, it is definitely a positive! For lazy old me, any requirement to do stuff (like shampoo) less often = total win :D so I'm glad that was an end effect of your experiement!

Thanks for complimenting my hair :) at the moment it's not feelng very nice at all because the climate has gone awol...humidity is making my hair feel even right after WO washing, my skin is breaking out, I feel dehydrated all the time...

Was tempted to shampoo but remembered that when I lived in Auckland (humidity central) my hair felt this bad or worse all the time even when I shampood. So I just rinsed a (very) little pine tar solution through it with my last WO wash to take the edge off and will handle :)

My hairs been getting flakey too.
I started washing my roots every 3ish. weeks with a tiny drop of shampoo. (Just because I have some left)

hmmm. i've been using baking soda whenever it gets disgustingly greasy but i think that's what's causing the flakes. i just did some research and apparently you're supposed to dilute it. lollllll

ok, i can weight in on this issue... same thing happened to me and also my fam was being jerky and saying my hair looked like poo poo, so i tried washing, dandruff didn't go away. i dunno wtf is up with my hair. i swear i never had dandruff before and i noticed it a while after being with dustin... i figured for a bit that it was because he has dandruff so i just got dandruff of his in my hair (stop being grossed out).. but it seems to be my very own. i dunno if i washed it regularly if it would go away... i went back to not washing... i dunno my hair feels amazingly soft and nice but i don't know what's up with the dandruff!

There are several causes. Could be an allergy, stress, or simply too-dry air in your living quarters caused by central heating. Or seborrhea, which being interpreted, is greasy scalp. I get mad dandruff during allergy season and it itches like hell, so I use tea tree oil in the last rinse. You could try that...like 5 drops in a cup  of warm water, work it in well and then rinse off.

thanks yabbit! i'll definitely tried it. i used less baking soda last night and less vinegar as well and there seems to not be as much dandruff. and it's not as greasy as when i use a ton of baking soda. next time, i'll use some tea tree oil. :D

I haven't tried baking soda or vinegar or anything yet but am thinking about trying a vinegar rinse every now and then to see if I like the way it feels.  I'm still pretty happy with it, but more so on some days than others....
My brother's getting married in two weeks and I don't want my hair to look like mank in the photos so I might start experimenting now and hope I'm not having an off day that day!

Giggling here...baking soda + vinegar rinse = bubbly hair! Maybe "shampoo" comes from "champagne hair"? It certainly might power-off some of the mankiness!  :-D

I have found that washing with anything just makes my hair feel yucker... but that may just be me, I've heard vinegar etc is really awesome for other people. I'm barely even water washing it now, I'm so gross :P I like my hair with cornflour rubbed in better than I do after water washing by a long way. And I just got my man to cut my hair with the kitchen scissors rather than pay $75 for a trim. I love not giving a crap about my hair!

Sucks about the dandruff issues guys, I would tend to agree with Yabbit about the tea tree oil? Hope something helps!

So I've put a tiny bit of diluted shampoo on my roots two times. BOTH TIMES IT MADE MY SCALP HURT. WHAT IS THIS.
Not going to do that anymore.
I am confused.
