Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Are you there yet, Hot Pants?!

Yes ma'am! Rolled in sometime yesterday--this place is a trip...I'll be blogging heavy about it...

I can't wait to read your blogs Hot Pants!

I found this little Mediterranean market in St. Pete yesterday that has organic produce and the good Greek Kalamata olives for less than half of what I've been paying for them off Whole Food's olive bar.  Whole Foods sucks so much!  I also got a nice big tub of freshly made tabouli for $2.00.  I know the bulger isn't raw but that's okay.  I'm still holding well above 80% most days.

I made raw pierogis last night using Matt Amsden's recipe in The Complete Book of Raw Food. It was soooo delicious! The cheese filling is so yummy - blended cashews, pine nuts, bell pepper, garlic, lemon juice, nama shoyu (I used Bragg's)....the pierogi "dough" was thinly shaved jicama. So good! I served it with salad. I even used leftover jicama sticks to make "cheese fries"!

That sounds awesome, lebkuchen.  I have too many zucchini and a big bunch of kale, but I have no idea what I'm going to do with it yet.  I guess it's time to pull out Juliano and find something new to try.

I know......this is just so wrong!  I did manage to keep some cantaloupe down yesterday afternoon, but I tried to have a small salad last night and up it came.  For the record, throwing up salad is just nasty!!

Okay, I'm still nauseous but I've started to do some raw prep in anticipation of being able to keep food down again.  I've got some green lentils and red clover seed set up to sprout and I'm soaking some pine nuts and cashew nuts for red pepper sheeze.  I'm hitting the farmer's market Saturday morning since I'm down to my last tomato and my last avocado.  I have a bit of romaine and a bunch of asparagus, but other than that.....the raw cupboard is bare.

How are you feeling Storm??? I really hope you are better! That suck you got the virus!

No raw news for me--I am just eating what I get my hands on out here--which ranges from canned beans to fresh veggies--just never know. I can tell you though that I am excited to do a juice fast and raw detox when I get back home! Eating on the road and on therun is taxing--and our "kitchen" is so small and ill equipped that it makes eating even normal meals a challenge--oh welll. I ate at Plum Bistro today in Seattle and it was F*ing AMAZING! Best vegan mac and cheese I have ever had in my life! <3

Lots of raw love to you ladies and gents!

Hi Hot Pants!  I'm much better now.  Back to my cranky old self!  All that hype over swine flu is so silly.  It's just another freakin' flu.
I went fruit crazy this weekend and picked up nectarines, grapes, blackberries, apples, bananas, and pineapple.  Smoothie time!  I think I'm going to experiment in the kitchen some this week.  After a week of eating so very little I feel the need to do some serious uncooking!

.....all alone in the raw thread again.  Yesterday I finally bought a copy of Ani's Raw Food Kitchen.  I'm totally looking forward to getting into it this weekend.  Yesterday I made raw lasagna roll-ups using long strips of zucchini, pizza cheese from goneraw, sun-dried tomato pesto, and raw olives.....nom.  Tonight I'm thinking taco salad.

Finally reporting on the jerk mushrooms I made previously, they came out really well though I dried them a bit longer than I should have.  I used plain old button mushrooms and it worked fine but next time I think I'm going to use fat slices of portobella.

Storm, Ani's taco nut meat is soooo awesome! I usually make a batch of that and some of her red pepper and corn salsa and serve it over greens. It is really yummy! I like her book a lot but it's very nut-heavy so sometimes the dishes feel a bit heavy in the tummy. One of my favorite recipes that I make often is the wilted spinach salad with marinated onions (or something like that, I forget the actual name). It's so incredibly easy to make but the flavor and presentation is awesome. I also really like the butternut squash and walnut rice dish (which I always serve with the wilted spinach salad, they go well together).

I haven't been posting because, well, I haven't had anything too exciting to report. Still eating raw most days and loving it! My only vice that I can't (and won't!) give up is air popped popcorn with Bragg's and nooch...I eat some almost every night while watching TV!  >:D

Thanks Lebkuchen.  I sat down last night and went through it and had a hell of a time deciding where to start.  I'm definitely going to make the Thai-style cucumbers and then maybe one of the soups......the Thailand Tom Kha Gai or perhaps the lemon fennel.
I did eat a bit of cooked food last night.  I sauteed some broccolini for my daughter and ate a little because it smelled so good cooking in all that garlic and olive oil.  It was good but I always feel guilty when I eat cooked food now.  It's so silly because there is nothing wrong with having a few cooked veggies from time to time yet every time I do, I feel like I have to go back on high raw for a while to make up for it even though I'm never below 80% raw.

I know what you mean about the guilt. It IS so silly. Why do we feel this way?? *sigh* I have had food issues for as long as I can remember - following all sorts of "rules" and whatnot. I really wish I could just be a guy and eat whatever and not care about it (like my hubby!) That's one of the (many) reasons why I love Gena's Choosing Raw blog so much - she is a raw goddess but she always makes a point to say how she still loves to eat some baked sweet potatoes or other root veggies every now and then, and when she was recently ill, she ate a lot of cooked veggies/soups/Ezekial toast, etc. because that's what her body craved and that's what made her feel well again - she is obviously not concerned about silly "raw rules" and things like that. She is awesome!  ;)b

I think, in some ways, this is why I'm eating popcorn almost every night - it's a way for me to not get too rigid in my raw-ness :)

I LOVE that blog!  Gena is so great!  I particularly love the post she did about healthy fats, and how so many people are scared of them because they're "bad" for you.  Meanwhile, she's stick thin, eats 2-3 avocados a day, and is in great health with tons of energy!

JC, I can't even tell you how many of her recipes I have made, and how freakin' DELICIOUS and EASY they are!! No dehydrators required!! I made so many gross raw soups before I tried hers, and hers are so fantastic, I eat them all the time (right now, I'm eating her raw tortilla soup....sooo good!) I love her salads, too - they're so simple but just different enough to be unique. Love her!!  :)>>>

You guys just reminded me that I haven't been to that blog in a while.  The only soup I've tried of hers is the creamy zucchini and it was nommy.

So I made the Thai-style cucumbers from Ani's book on Saturday and it was quite good.  I didn't take a picture because my daughter was at a theatre workshop and took the camera with her.....brat!  I really do like taking food pictures, especially raw pictures, but I tend to dive right into the food without thinking about the picture until too late.  I made this salad http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=15077.0 on Sunday and actually remembered to take a picture.  It was very pretty and I'll post it as soon as I get the camera downloaded.
Well, I'm off to Gena's blog to find this raw tortilla soup you ladies are talking about.

Hi everyone!

I feel so guilty not checking on this thread in so long--but alas...I am all about the cooked food these days--I feel silly posting in here. BUT--it sounds like several of you are doing really great with raw! yea!!! I still sing the praises of raw and jusicing and I look forward to the time when i can rejoin your fine ranks!! Till then...I'll be eating vegan doughnuts from mighty-o's and vegan pizza from Pizza Pi!

Loves ya all!!
