Raw Chit-Chat!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!
I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?
Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?
OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Is tea raw? The leaves have been fermented, haven't they? But I think fermentation is raw? When I make sun tea (spearment), I put it in my refrigerator from the start. It "brews" just fine.
I'm going to have to dig my sprouting jars out of storage for this one.
When I make sun tea I put about 8 tea bags in the jar and leave it in a sunny part of the driveway (back home in MI) for at least 4-6 hours.

I don't know of any raw nutmilk. If boxes of milk are like canned foods, they'd have to heat it. I haven't seen raw nutmilks in the refrigerator section.
I have a recipe that says to blend 2 cups of nuts, soaked overnight, (and I suppose that'd include any seed?) with 5 to 6 cups of water (to taste), for a minute and then strain it.
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I have a recipe for Collard Rolls that uses arame seaweed and the directions say to soak it for 15 minutes. In another recipe, Seaweed Tahini Salad, the arame is only soaked for 3 minutes in warm water. In another recipe book, it says to follow the directions on the package for the amount of time to soak. This cookbook saves the water. I'm not sure what it's used for, though. My seaweed is in storage, so I can't check it.

I had that problem, too. I would set it on the lowest setting and then keep the door partially open. That's not safe if the pilot somehow goes out, it's a waste of energy, and heats the house. My mom put out trays in the sun and took them in at night for a couple of days. I think she might have set a light piece of cloth or bit of screen (available by the foot at places like Ace Hardware) over it to keep the insects off of whatever she was drying.
Also, don't forget about that thread we had a while ago for the "Eating Raw" club! It's got lots of pages of info too.

eta: KMK i looked at that link. it makes me miss all my buddies that don't post anymore (JH, cephi....) :'( :'( :'(
Oh, sorry! Where is Cephi, anyway?
I messaged him during our interlude on stemma. He's focusing on finishing his dissertation and felt that vegweb was too much of a distraction. (Don't get any ideas bp!)
Thanks for all the info ladies!!!
I have an electric oven--so I guess that's just not going to work--I think I'm going to break down and go look at dehydrators tomorrow--I have a positive balance on my Kohls card, so maybe I can find a decent one there--I would really like to be able to make raw cereals, breads, cookies etc.
As for the milk issue--for some reason I'm really worried about trying to make my own nut milk--but I guess when it comes down to it it's almonds and water processed and strained--can't be that hard right? but I'll probably use nana milk for the most part.
Thanks for letting me knwo about quick oats--I was just wondering that today--I have a full package of them and I was looking all over it trying to see if it said raw anywhere--but getting raw oat groats will be easy--I'm sure Whole Foods will have them in there bulk section :)
Gosh! I am just so darn excited to get started! I can't wait for Friday--I've been thinking about what I want t omake for my first raw breakfast (offiicial one anyways...) I'm thinking maybe a fruit salad of apples, banana's and blueberries with flad and sesame seeds! Sounds so good :)
Yeah! ;D
Did you ever feel like something was just meant to be?? So I'm at Kohls today looking to max out my store card and I'm searching the kitchen section for a dehydrator--I'm not seeing anything, and then I glance down at a bottom shelf and their very last dehydrator is sitting there...on clearence! It's a totally lame, no frills, cheapo Ronco 5 tray--but it was only $17!!!! The raw cereal I was going to buy is $12 a bag so I figured if the only thing I can make on this is raw cereal I got a bargin! I really wish I could get one of those awesome Excalibur's, but hey--at least I have something to practice on and get me through my first month--and at $17--it's a rawbie's life saviour!! Tomorrow I'm going to buy raw oat gorats, blue berries, bananas, pecans and agave syrup and start uncooking my first batch of cereal--tell me that combo doesen't sound good!
Looking through the "manual" (it was like 3 pages...) it said you can use plastic cooking wrap in the machine for fruit roll ups--does anyone know if you can use wax paper? Just seems wax paper would be easier to work with than plastic wrap...

This is the one I got--it's convection only with no fan...but like I said, if I can at least do up my ceral in it--then I'll be happy :) I'll keep ya'll posted!
Great deal! Will you be my personal shopper?
If I found a dehydrator for $17, I would have delayed buying an Excalibur.

Yea...that was my thoughts exactly! $17 was just too good of a deal--even if it is a cheapy--if it only lasts for the month it will still be a good deal--although I do hope it lasts untill I can get my excalibur!!!
My flax seed crackers are in the dehydrator. In 20 hours we'll see how my first time went.
It's powdered flax seed, with red bell pepper and garlic 'n stuff. I'm not sure what to spread on them, or if I want to eat them plain. The Spinach and Avocado Spread looks good. I usually don't eat avocado, but some sort of spread would make it seem like a full, more satisfying meal - moreso than if I used salsa.
Raw hummus would be great with them! I'm looking for raw gabonza beans as we speak! I checked at Whole Foods today but they didn't know if ther dry/bulk was raw or not--someones supposed to call me...
anyways--you can make zucchini hummus or babaganosh! Both of those would be yummy with your flax chips!!!
I'm having a hard time finding circular teflex sheets for my dehydrator :( I might have to order the special tray from Ronco...but dang! I don't want to spend $10 + S&H...they'll be more than what I paid for the unit!! :(
I was just reading on Whole Foods' website about flaxseed.
A high dose of flaxseed is considered 1/4 cup a day for a 2,000 calorie diet, or 10% of the total diet. I'll have to remember to limit the number of crackers I have each day. Maybe to one? If I eat about a 1,200 calorie diet (damn thyroid), a large daily amount would only be a couple of tablespoons.
Yea..I like to "forget" how high flax is caloricly...I just love it soooo much! I just figure--flax helps with digesting and getting what needs to go out so it's ok to have a little extra since it's pulling all the crap (literally) out of you!
I was worried about the high calorie flax thing too, but if you're worried about getting enough omega 3's, I bought some vegan smart balance yesterday (the light is the only kind that's vegan) and it now has flax oil in it... and it's still "light". \
Ps. Capture, I like your hair.
HH- i can't help but think you resemble a cat in your picture..... :P

That is me. I lived with Cat so long that we started to look alike.

That sounds a lot like the ones I make. Where did your recipe come from or is it your own concoction? I sort of combined two other recipes I found online.
I had previously tried going raw for a week with a couple of other ladies here, but I was ill prepared (no dehydrator) and only lasted four days. I'm very interested to follow your progress, Capture. I have quite a few raw recipes I searched out during my attempt. I'd be happy to send them to you if you're interested.
hh, those crackers sound delish! whats the recipe??
on another note. i think i've eaten totally raw today so far. without trying. i feel great!! maybe thats why i felt energized to work in the garden for a good 30 minutes this morning then doing laundry and vacuming as compared to not doing anything at all....
I got the recipe from Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook. I like the book. I've made three things out of it already (I've had it for less than a month), which might be the most I've used any recipe book. (I suppose the way I posted it is copyright okay.)
3 cups golden flax seed, ground
2 large red bell peppers
2-3 cloves garlic
1/4 cup raisins
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
Blend them together, spread it on dehydrator sheets, and dry for 16-20 hours at 110 F.
thanks so much hh!! im going to make those today!
i also found this recipe, created by pip!! but i want to make it raw.. rawanize... or something. ill let you know how it turns out!
