nose piercings: yay or nay?

Soooooo I've wanted to get my nose pierced with a teeny tiny stud since about middle school.
I think they're so cute.

Do any of you have your nose pierced?  Good idea?  Bad idea?  Cute?  Ugly?  Thoughts?

I just worry about coming to a point in my life where I don't want it anymore, like a really important job or....my wedding day.....etc.  I hear it will close up on its own, but still.

:-\

hmm it can be cute or gross, but i think you could pull it off.  as long as it's very small and subtle.  i say go for it!

I'm taken by eyebrow piercings, myself.  I have freckles, so I figured that if I ever got one and changed my mind it'd blend in.

Here's what I think.  I apologize ahead of time for the conservativeness of my comments.  I'd wait.  You're an engineering major, right?  And you're going to graduate some time soon?  Engineers are slightly more conservative, so I suggest waiting until you have a job and then do it if you still want.  You've waited nearly decade already, one more year won't be much.

OK, well, it's complicated.
I am an engineering major but I don't think I will end up being an engineer.
My immediate (and recently confirmed!) post-grad plans are doing Teach for America for two years (as a secondary math teacher).  But that's no place for a nose piercing either, I s'pose.  Then after that, who knows what my job will be.  Maybe grad school, maybe engineering, maybe more being a teacher, maybe super famous vegan chef, ya know...... ;D

Curses, HH, you are such the voice of reason...... ;D

I think that nose rings are cute. As for teaching with a nose ring? It depends on the location in which you teach.

I think pretty much every girl looks good with a tiny stud in their nose. You'd look great, I'm sure.
The trouble is you usually have to have a ring for first the couple weeks, but after that those little studs are hardly noticeable. I would think you could probably even get away with it in the classroom these days, but that's just my opinion.

/have my septum pierced, but haven't worn anything in it for years.. those cartilage piercings retain their value well :)

nah dude, my cousin got her nose pierced a few months ago and they let her do the stud.

I think you'd look good with one, you should go for it...even if you did decide to take it out one day or whatever, it's not like a tiny little baby hole in the side of your nose is going to make people think less of you.

Do it.

I wanted one, but never got one.  Why do they suck?

On the nose piercing for you, if you want to be a math teacher in Teach for America, you'll get a pretty grimy job.  I'd imagine that anyone willing to teach math for them could have a bone sticking straight out of each ear and they'd be fine with it.  I can't imagine a nose piercing would be a problem there.

I've had my septum pierced for about 6 years now, and I love it more than any of the rest of my piercings (I've had 11, all told)

The good thing about septum rings and professional jobs, is that, if you get the horseshoe-shaped jewelry, you can just flip that bad larry up into yer nose, and no one will ever see it at all.

I used to do just that, when I worked in the library at my college, a Jesuit institution. Of course, there was that time that I actually ah inhaled one of the balls, then felt it going down my throat. But I'm sure that's rare!

I think my septum ring is awesome. I currently have an "eternal circle" (I think it's called that), it's basically a seamless ring in my nose. It's tiny, hardly hangs past my septum, most people don't even notice it.

I've never wanted a nostril piercing. I dunno, I don't think it would look good on a nose with nostrils that don't flare out slightly to the sides, you know? My nostrils go straight back, if that makes sense, and my nose is short. Like the rest of me. .

Well I dunno how much they hurt and stuff but for a guys perspective, girls look terrible with nose rings.  Only get one if you are going for a heavy punky look...  So you need to dress to match it and do your hair funky and act punky or gothy to match.  Then it can be sorta sexy.  But when 'normal' girls do it it just makes them look sleezy and wanna-be trendy.

I say go for it!  I have mine done, got it almost a year ago, and get many compliments on it.  It's a fun piercing to have because it is right there and you can wear cute, colorful jewelry if you want, or just go conservative with a clear jeweled stud.  I think it looks tasteful on most girls I've ever seen it on.  Also, the piercing places around here (madison, wi) do the stud for the piercing and are great about helping you change the jewelry if you need help (it's not that scary to change it at first, but nice to know there are professionals if I needed it back then!).  And it really didn't hurt much, just a quick sharp pain.  Be sure to care for it well (my place gave me a baggie of sea salt and some antibacterial/antiseptic soap, along with detailed instructions on cleaning and soaking).  Oh, and with regard to professionalism with a nose ring, I am a vet tech and there are 3 of us with nose piercings (large practice), and we've never had a comment or complaint.  And you can use clear retainers in the piercing when you are at work if you had to, then be all crazy nose-piercing girl at night!

:ok!: so YES to the nose piercing!!!

ETA:  Oh, and I am not punky or goth and I think it looks good on me (maybe I am a little biased?  ;)), so don't be afraid of the idea just because someone else says only girls like that have appropriate facial piercings!

Do it!!!  Ive had mine for almost 3 years and I love it.  I say do it now, dont wait around just do...even if you teach I really dont think it will be an issue, people have tattoos and teach, I think its totally fine. :)

I want one too-- in fact, I was talking about this last night. It sounds so ridiculously vain, but the only reason I don't want to do it is because I also sometimes wear my lip piercing and sometimes my big thick glasses, and I think that would be too much stuff on my face. I have light eyes, eyebrows, and lips, so I think you can barely see my face when I have all the stuff on me. Plus, I'm totally not punk enough to get away with two facial piercings and a couple visible tattoos.

I think its all in your personality and if it actually is a cute piece of you or an additional show off spot for tacky.  I have a very lovely friend who is neither punky nor gothy but rocks the tiny nose stud.

Bet some bindi (oh man did i misspell that!) press on type gems and give it a try, Kate!

Personally, I dont like my nose, so I dont want a ring in it.  I do like my eyebrows and have considered getting one of those.  Will probably happen this summer so the kid can have hers done as well.  I am not a huge fan of trendy.  I am a fan of doing what feels right for me.  If it doesnt work out, a tiny scar will be the only reminder, if it even leaves that!

There's at least two Bible verses that mention nose rings.  Genesis 24:22 is where Isaac gives a nose ring and bracelets to Rebekah as a token of his intention to make her his bride.  In Ezekiel 16:12 God is "talking" to the nation of Israel as if it was a woman and telling "her" all the things he's given her.  I'm not that old fashioned; I think piercings make a pretty girl look ugly.  Especially if you're not careful it'll look like you have a big zit on your nose to the casual observer.  I've also heard people say that they got a cold before it was totally healed and it got badly infected.  The way I see it is that by the time you're 50 (like me) you'll probably have so many scars that you wish you didn't have so why add to that. Just my $.02

I've given this a lot of thought as well.  I've always wanted a nose ring, just a stud, but didn't get one because (like many have said) it got too trendy.  Now I think that not getting one because "it's too trendy" is kinda the same as getting one because it's trendy.  Anyway, right now I am a teacher in a VERY conservative elementary school.  It's not like they could fire me for it, but it definitely would cause "whispers" and maybe a conference with the principal about professionalism (don't even get me started..... :-X).  Anyway, I'm quitting that job and this summer, (barring a new job that prohibits piercings) I am getting it done.  I always wanted to dye my hair purple, but I didn't.  Now I don't think I could pull it off, and I regret not doing it 10 years ago.  I don't want to make the same "mistake" again.  I want a nose ring, damnit!  :P
