Anyone good with bugs?!
Okay so I bought some spinach yesterday and apperently I got more then just veggies because when I got to the BOTTOM of the bag today (thankfully I've only eaten like a handful of it) there is this really freaky and nasty smelling bug in there... STILL ALIVE! I need someone to help me identify it. I have a hard time believing its from anywhere around where I live, and I know it didn't crawl to the bottom of a sealed bag.
Its beige-tan colored has orange brown legs, 8 of them. It looks like it has a really hard "shell", but I'm not touching it. And its really funky shaped, almost like a triangle but not.
I threw the thing into a container and its sitting on my kitchen counter now. I really can't take a photo of it unless I let it out.. I was going to do that then it must have let off some sort of stink because I threw up in my sink shortly after. I got really nauseated and light headed after that.
I have like this fear of bugs, espcially one I've never seen. I did lots of googling and have no flippin clue what this thing is. I know one thing, I'm done with spinach for awhile, just EW!!! >:( >:( >:(
If it helps, regular honey bees out collecting are all females. When they get older, they get pushed out of the hive and they have to go collect pollen until they drop dead. I'm not recommending it to someone who's allergic, but you can gently pet them while they're on a flower.
That just made me terribly sad.
Queen bees also emit a pheromone to keep all the ladies sterile. Feel better? XP
Not so much :(
Not so much :(
Ohhhh....so that's why you never see a pregnant bee. Or one pushing a pram.
:-D ::)
(Sorry, I think I have a fever. Ignore me.)
Pretty much every person i know runs from bees/wasps. Guys, girls, teachers. They all jump at least. I'm usually the only one standing there still wondering what happened. I remember one day walking to class 2 girls started running screaming, it was a bee.
During my organics class in 2002, we learned how to look after beehives and collect honey. One day when we were going out to open up the hives, several of us students decided to forgo the gloves. Nobody got stung. It was all about keeping our cool, because the bees can sense when you're upset, and are more likely to sting. It was kinda freaky, though, having those little guys (uh, girls) crawling on our hands. ;D
Bees are my favorite bug.
what's the difference between an insect and a bug? are they the same thing?
I like bees. I'm allergic to them though, so I just try not to piss them off. Wasps, however, frighten me. We had an infestation at our last apt... I mean HUNDREDS nesting in between the window panes and they kept getting in the house. Those lil buggers dive-bombed my head with no provocation.
just thought i'd share a bug fear that makes even the most irrational fears seem rational. my roommate once approached me to tell me our apartment was infested, he was breaking out from the bugs all over. and I said uhh what bugs? Turns out we had had fruit flies for like a day (until I took the overripe fruit out and washed the bowl) and he was convinced he was seeing them everywhere. I'm convinced he was stressing himself out which gave him the skin issues. Crazy, yeah? Can fruit flies bite you or make you break out in any way shape or form???
I once had a friend who was afraid of bugs flying into her mouth. When we were outdoors, she'd walk around waving her hand in front of her mouth to shoo the bugs away.

:wow: *shudder*
....
But bees, yeah, bees are beautiful and awesome. I appreciate them so much because I got the chance to see how they live (albeit in the factory-farm equivalent of their natural houses).

Insects have 6 legs and 3-segmented bodies. "Bugs" can have any number of those things. Like millipedes etc. Actually though, "Bug" is just a blanket word for "small critters with exoskeletons that make most people jump, scream and run or head for the spray."
I can understand being afraid of bees and wasps (I am deathly allergic to their stings myself, as in my respiratory system shuts down) but my sister used to scream at the sight of a grasshopper. What can they do to you? Well, yeah, spit that brown junk, but only if you grab them. And I've never been fast enough. I understand phobias but I think she was just being a "drama queen" because it was only when other people were around that she'd do it.
I think y favorite bug is the praying mantis. We had a tiny one living on a plant on our deck for a while and I'd go out and talk to it. it was green and pink.
We also had a gorgeous spider living outside in a bush with an elaborate web and I'd goo look at it. See.. I wasn't afraid of it out there that's where it belongs....it's when I find them in the house or on me that I freak.

My friend found one of those outside our dorm last semester, it was HUGE. She dubbed her (we're pretty sure it was a girl) "Biggest Bug" for some really odd reason. But it was pretty awesome.
I think the female mantids are much larger than the males, if I remember correctly. Comes of devouring your mate after copulation...makes you big and strong.

I think wasps are from Satan >:D ;) ;D
