Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

yes and yes. i love 80/10/10... i really didn't feel like anything else was working because i never felt like i had enough calories. apparently, typically the raw fooders who say "eat tons of vegetables!!!!" get an average of 40% of their calories from fat. yikes! I love the high fruit, you just have to get used to eating huge volumes!

you can also check out dr. graham's website www.foodnsport.com :) he also answers questions personally on one of the vegsource forums... there is a link that says RAW/graham or something, but i have noticed that many people ask ridiculous questions and he is like "have you read 80/10/10?"
i love www.30bananasaday.com other than the fact that their forums are a terrible layout...

Good to know.  Thanks again!

As much as I don't believe mainstream "nutritionists" & as much as I've adjusted my outlook on food/health since becoming vegan 2.5 years ago, it's still hammered in my head that too much sugar (even from fruit) is unhealthy & will lead to weight gain & rotten teeth.  Intuitively, I don't believe this, but I guess old habits (and beliefs) die hard.  I really want to read this book & try it out!

lol well you certainly never see fat 811 people... i don't know of anyone with terrible teeth... i saw this talk graham did and he said he asked four dentists (not his personal dentist, just random ones he met) what caused tooth decay.. their answers:
1. too much fat
2. not enough fat
3. too much carbs
4. not enough carbs

isn't that funny? they don't even know what causes tooth decay.

i think in terms of rotten teeth the bigger problem is if thing stick to your teeth.

i found that sight very interesting and informative, thanks hespedal for sharing!

so i decided to make a cpersonal ommitment to high-90s raw; and i came to the conclusion that the feelings i felt and the way nawab indian hit me yesterday, was soo not worth the taste and flavor.  it felt like a bad food hangover! so now i feel i got it out of my system.

i did learn this morning that waking up and doing moderately-rigorous exercise does help me clear my mind, ease my stomach, and help me get ready for the day..i  felt good, and light. i didn't do an ayurvedic oil pulling this morning, but i will resume with those on Sunday.

for breakfast i made a 'detox' juice (i use that term lightly): celery + cranberries + lemon + watercress ...bleeh all i could do to get it down, but its something for me to sip on throughout the morning.  I figured lemon= liver cleansing, celery= appetite suppresant and a good source of flavonoids (sp?), and the cranberries = urinary/ digestive health. the watercress just needed to get used up before wilting.

i also ate an apple.

for lunch i made a raw stir fry with julienned spaghetti squash 'lo mein', broccoli, onion, green pepper, and avocado cutlets.  i tossed in a dash of soy sauce with some crushed red pepper and some garlic and ginger.

Geez, I missed out on some interesting discussion after I logged off yesterday!  :(

I'm getting ready to make my first post-surgery attempt to drive my car.  The raw cupboard is bare and the HFS is only 1.6 miles away.  Wish me luck, I haven't actually been given the green light to drive, but a girl has gotta eat......

storm, how did your trip to the hfs fare??  so, i was browsing the thrift store and found a really nice high power food processor and a better, bigger juicer.  i also stocked up on maca, goji berries, raw cashews, walnuts, mesquite, and a whole spectrum of fresh raw produce. im psyched, and like jessicita i too have been reading a lot and checking out new and exciting recipies, focusing on balance. yesterday i made a raw apple cobbler, oatmeal raisin cookies, (cashew) alfredo with (zucchini) pasta, with a dandelion- endive salad.

Smooth sailing.....of course, it's only 1.6 miles from my house.  Tomorrow will be the big test.  I'm going to try and drive to my office which is 28 miles from my house.

VBR, what are you planning to do with the mesquite powder?  I bought some at Abby's over a month ago and I still haven't used it.  They brought in a whole bunch of new raw stuff and I went wonkers and bought it all and have no idea what to I'm going to do with some of it.

Today was pretty basic: green smoothie, banana,  pear, spinach salad, and swamp soup...  My French lentils didn't sprout  :( so the raw chili never happened.

i've seen it used in various recipies for chocolates and brownies...i used it in some carob powder mixed with agave and a little pure water and made a carob dipping sauce for banana bites.  i had a sweet tooth for breakfast yesterday.  here's ani phyo's chocolate, from her book:

Liquid Chocolate, page 74

1 cup cacao butter, melted
1/2 cup cacao powder
1 Tablespoon mesquite powder
1 teaspoon maca powder

its on her website too.  also ive seen Shazzie use it in a cake recipe.

i made a sunflower seed scramble for breakfast over spinach, and made raw pasta (zucchini) with meat sauce (sunflower + tomato)  for my lunch.  i guess tonight i'll have some sort of entree....haven't yet decided what i'm going to fix.  it'll have to be quick though, its going to be a busy night.

i am sooo in love with my new high-powered food processor...i seriously don't think i'd be able to stay raw without it; it totally affects the texture and versatility of some foods....and the new juicer has more power and the ability to juice more.

Okay, so now I've got sprouts coming out the wazoo!  I must have screwed something up the first time because the French lentils sprouted this time and so did the daikon radish seeds and red clover seeds!  It's looking like a big fat salad full of sprouts tonight!
:)
I'm going to make a batch of Italian flax crackers tomorrow.  I haven't used my dehydrator since just before the surgery....I think it has cobwebs now.

i've really been having fun with raw; and like jessicita, i've been doing a LOT of reading and learning and exploring, and i am loving where my journey is taking me. the one thing i like about RAW is that it helps me to zone in and really learn myself and my body--- what it likes, responds well to, doesn't respond well to...and i feel i lost a lot of that connection with SAD.

Geez, we're way down the page!  Time to fix that.

I basically had a salad weekend.  Just sheer laziness on my part.....salad is easy.  I would really like to get out of the salad slump, but I haven't been very motivated since the surgery.  Somebody needs to give me a kick in the butt.

i had an awesome raw weekend: some of the stuff i made:

-raw pasta (zucchini) with meat sauce (marinara + sunflower seeds)
-raw pasta (zucchini) with raw pesto
-i made a holiday peanut marzipan
-a few smoothies, most green smoothies
-caesar salad
-gingerbread cookies

mmm....

so question: have any of you other RAWs had blood tests done? did everything come out normal? I was watching Paul Nison's youtube 'announcement' about not being a raw vegan anymore; he consumes raw goats milk because his blood levels were not healthy.  just curious if this is the case for others...

paul nison is stupid. i saw that video.

I haven't had a full panel done, but I plan to when I go in for my semi-annual physical in Feb.  I've been mostly raw for just over a year now so I'll be interested to know if I've been "doing it right".

There is another vegan raw foodist who recently mad a similar announcement to Paul Nison!  I don't know his real name, but he has that Raw Model blog...  He started drinking raw goats milk because he suddenly had an epiphany that being 100% vegan is not natural or healthy...  :-\

honestly, i have issues with consuming animal products; i flinch at the thought of incorporating them into my diet.  my question, is why is a goat's milk the only source of whatever element these people seem to be lacking?

i would supplement before i ate animal products again, and i am against supplementation.
