Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Thank you for reminding me that I need to check my oil.  I'm generally religious about my car maintenance, but I've been a bit lax since the surgery.  That whole bending over the engine thing is a big no no, but it's just going to have to be done.

Happy New Year to all my raw sisters!

awww. poor storm!

my filipino friend from work told me to buy fresh round fruits -10 of them- for the new year; have them with you in the new year brings you good luck and prosperity...so i figured its a good excuse to buy more fresh fruit!! :)

also i have a coupon the cleaning lady at work gave me for a FREE 3lbs of bananas...i always stopped to talk to her and gave her a banana when i had an extra one, and since it was her last day, she brought in a coupon for me she had. karma rocks

Now VBR, do you really need an excuse to buy more fresh fruit?!  :D

does it count that i just ate ten oranges, or do they need to be present at midnight?

oh i never need an excuse to eat more fruit ;)

and hespedal let's count it! hahaha i don't have collard greens so im substituting with kale....so hey nothins more fun than twistin' a tradition around ;)

btw i LOVE mono-mealing.... i ate half a bag of cherries...didnt feel guilty about it...and felt full 15min later, and not in a bad way...hmm.... *thoughts to ponder*

i could soo do monomealing in the morning for breaky...eat a bunch of bananas, drink a few glasses of water, and i'd bet id be set until lunch time....hmm...

i do mono meals. usually i don't mono in the evening bc i eat salads and i usually have fruit before the salad, but breakfast and lunch for sure.

The awesome thing about eating a ton of fruit at once is your feel like you get "hungry" pretty quickly, but really it is just when you finish digesting in your stomach that people feel they are hungry again... you stay satiated for so long! if you ate enough, that is.

FIRST POST OF THE NEW DECADE IN THE RAW CHIT-CHAT woo hoo!
Wow..i'm a raw dork!

i made ani phyo's save-the-salmon cakes and i will make another batch of remoulade and raw slaw to go with....but funny, my first meal of the decade was a bowl of cherries.

VBR, you totally win the prize for Raw Dork of the year!

My first meal was a smoothie, followed by a salad.  I had planned to start a three day juice fast today, but those plans have fallen to the wayside.  My daughter and I went down to the Farmer's Market this morning and I kind of went wonkers and bought organic hydroponic lettuce and dill and then locally grown organic tomatoes, cucumbers, Swiss chard, cilantro, French breakfast radishes, and strawberries.  So now I have a fridge full of produce to eat.....oh darn!  I hate it when that happens! ;)  It was a fabulous morning at the market.....about 60 degrees down by the bay, breezy, sunny, and the band was playing zydeco music.  I love Florida in the winter time!

believe it or not, im actually not doing any grocery shopping this weekend...i have a ton of stuff in the fridge and cabinets that need to get eaten, so ill try to make a trip to the organic mall next weekend.  so i cant figure out what exactly did it but i ate something this morning that was really...REALLY digestively cleansing...possibly the buckwheat crispies cereal w. goji berries and banana? (actually, the only thing i ate this morning) so im guessing it was the goji berries...hmmm ill have to do some more research on goji berries and digestive health.

I tried a new fruit today!

White sapote.. soo good! It tasted kinda like a pear but with a really creamy amazing texture... with a little bit of persimmon mixed in.

We found it at the farmer's market. Happy day!

Hesp, I've seen those before but never tried one.  Now I think I shall have to.  Right now I'm nomming the strawberries I bought this morning.  It's still a bit early in strawberry season so the sugar content hasn't peaked yet, but the strawberry flavor is fabulous!  February and March are when they are the absolute best!

I'm going to go and pull out Juliano and Ani and see what I can do with this chard.  This is only the second time I've ever bought it and the first time I cooked it.

yeah, we have strawberries year round here, but the last time we got them (i think mid-november) they tasted awful after a day in our fridge so we aren't getting any more for a while.

I made a half batch of the Live Cinnamon Rolls from The 30 Minute Vegan, and I think they're going to be delicious (based on my taste tests of each individual component).  I'm not having one until tomorrow, so I will report back then, but whoa.

'based on my taste tests of each individual component...' hillarious.  once i taste tested 'each individual component' for a raw cookie dough, and didn't even wait until the cookies had fridge-set.  :X

but thats just how i roll sometimes.

speaking of cookies, i think i'm going to go make a batch of RAW Dark Chocolate Brownie Balls; you can see a pic of them here since vegweb isnt letting me post in the food porn thread because the pic is too large:

Just a question for you raw food fans...Do any of you eat raw potatoes? just curious, I love them, but everyone tells me I'm nuts to eat them raw(I don't eat the green ones, I cook those bad babies}...I guess I'm just a potato freak ;)b

Potatohead-

i personally don't then again, i am trying to reduce my starch intake, so i don't eat raw sweet potatoes either.  i was actually creeped out when i saw how the water you boil potatoes in gets starchy (and i recently found out that gluey, icky stuff in that water was the starch from the potatoes!) i was creeped out thinking, jeez how does that stuff not get clogged up and plaque-y in my system?! the same with cheese...i look at how stringy and gooey and sticky it is, and just... i just don't see how that could aid in digestion.

VBR,
I can tell you from experience that eating a raw potato(peeled) will cure a tummy ache, I usually bake my potatoes, only boil them if I'm making mashed...I kind of follow the teachings of Dr. John McDougall, his plan helped me drop over 100lbs, and I ate a ton of potatoes doing it....Thanks for your answer, its interesting to find out what others eat and why ;)b

that's cool; different strokes, different folks.  it would be interesting to see what the other RAW ladies have to say; i am only one person! :)
