Nooch and Issues

Everytime I eat nutrional yeast I get these cramps and pains to the point where I can barely walk and I get a lot of digestive issues. Does anyone else get this and why would this be happening?

I switched from large flakes to small flakes, and never had a problem after that.
really unhelpful, I know, but it would make me sad to not be able to use nooch : /
hopefully you can find a type that works better for you!
I thought they were all the same, what's the difference? How do I know if the flakes are large or small? Even if I use a small amount, raw or cooked, I get major, major pains. It happened to me when I used Red Star and it happens to me now still but I use the kind from the bulk bin at my co-op.

If you get them from bulk, it should say large or small/mini. At least my bins always did. With the large flake, you can see the flakes..larger flakes. The small is more of a powder.
psssht, flakes, powder. You should man up and eat some BARK!

Yeah, that's still crazy.
Can I just kind of crush it up so that it's a powder, do you think that would work?
Oww, by bark....do you mean TVP? lol, that's more like cardboard. I was reading the links and its weird because as far as I know, I don't get these problems from any other food whether it be other yeasts or TVP.
Yeah, that's still crazy.
And still makes no sense.
Minke, that's what the nooch looks like in NZ. That picture is.the.nooch.
Oww, by bark....do you mean TVP?
no, I'm still too scared to buy tvp, it just looks like cat food to me. Though, apparently I have tried some in Shell's awesome chilli she made for our NZVW meetup, but as I didn't have to see it in it's original catfood form, I feel ok about that.
By bark I mean nooch. Barky, twiggy, crunchy nooch. : )
I don't believe you. That looks like wood chips. :o
Can you just like... eat a stick of nooch?
Can you just like... eat a stick of nooch?
you certainly can. If it wouldn't all shatter and turn into crumbs by the time it got there, I'd so post you some : )

Shell and Theo will back me up. So would Heli but she doesn't come round here much at the mo.
What exactly is nutritional yeast anyway???
Dang! I should have sent you some US nooch, oww.
yep NZ nooch = barky nooch (note that is barky, not barfy!)
hh, don't worry I have already planned for my first visitor from the UK to bring over a tub of UK nooch....although thinking about it, maybe that's also different from the US stuff, but I don't think so.
Anyway, the plan is for someone to bring out a tub and then to cook 2 batches of the same thing (with oww and theo) and we can have a taste off.
This is the first I have told them of it, but I know they're both as crazy as me and would love the taste off.
NOTE: oww and theo: YOU WILL LIKE THIS IDEA.
I also plan on getting some UK marmite brought over for a taste off too.
Anyway, sorry minke I have no sensible contribution to this thread. Except to say I'm really sorry you have this problem.
What exactly is nutritional yeast anyway???
It's yeast (S. cerevisiae, same as used for making alcohol and bread) cultured with sugar/molasses. The B vitamins in it are actually added (not just for nutritional purposes, but for the yeast to grow), so some brands have more of something than others... maybe getting so much (often 100s-1000s of percent values) of at least one of those vitamins is causing the problems? Also, I see on wikipedia it says it has a relatively high level of free glutamic acid - maybe a sensitivity to nooch is really an MSG thing?
