You are here

for the ladies...and the brave men out there

Summer is coming and for those of you who do take time to remove unwanted body hair  ;)  Just curious as to what the vegwebbers use or do to get that smooth vegan skin hehe.

I'm with you, jb, about the bikini waxing.  I'm a huge fan.  I just wish I could afford to get it done more often.  Other than that, I shave my legs and armpits, and I wax my own brows and tweeze the strays.  I actually just started waxing my own brows recently, and I love it because I lack patience for tweezing, and my hairs are on the light side and difficult to see.

I totally agree Kate, it is so expensive, but i've recently started doing it myself and i definitely recommend it if you can manage it!  My wax only costs me about $20 a tub, it's strip-free wax, and i get about 5-6 waxes out of one tub.  you just stick the tub in the microwave, slap it on and go!  i definitely recommend a hand mirror for the hard to reach areas!!!  :P  and totally agreeing with waxing your own eyebrows too!!  dunno about you but my brows are quite thick and it drives me nuts to tweeze them all the time, i reckon a once-a-week eyebrow wax with tweezing in between is the way to go hey!

Another one who uses the Preserve razors.  I'm not giving Gilette my money!  They are one of the worst for animal testing, or at least they used to be when I first became veggie like 20 years ago.  I just realized that I have no idea what their status is now, I haven't done any research on them in a long time.

You wax your own bikini area?  Whoooaaaa.  I don't think I'm up for that.  Hey, what are the ingredients in the wax?  Is it vegan?  I know we've discussed waxing before but I've never given thought to whether it was vegan.

My eyebrows aren't too thick, they just have lots and lots of blonde hairs around the periphery which are hard to see.  And you'd think, then, that it wouldn't make a difference to remove them, but it totally makes the difference between a clean-looking eyebrow and a scruffy one.  Anyway it kills my eyes to pluck them all, so I just wax the entire area.  Makes things easier.

Waxing your own lady parts is pretty hardcore. I've done my own legs before (my mom bet me I couldn't do it..then she never paid me haha) but when I tried to do the lady places, I kept chickening out and not pulling quick enough so it didn't work. :/

hey again Kate!  i'm not sure if its vegan, i've never thought about it either!  i'm at my work's coffs harbour office at the moment which is about 3 hours from home so i don't have it with me but i'm gonna go have a look on their website, if i can't find it though i'd planned on buying some this week (i'm seeing my fella on the weekend after 3 weeks of not seeing him if you get my drift...) so i will definitely let you know the ingredients.  oh and totally agreeing with the eyebrows, its amazing what a difference a shaped eyebrow can make to your face, it's like getting a facelift i reckon!

Ponycakes, you're a legend for trying, trust me, its not easy to do your own waxing, let alone your...bits...i totally relate to what you did too, the first time i tried to wax my downstairs, well i won't go into too much detail but i was fine for the most part but there is just this one particularly fiddly, painful little area that actually needs about 5-6 wax strips even though its the smallest area...it ended up taking me about 3 hours to do those 5-6 wax strips because i'd start peeling one off and it would hurt so bad that i'd have to work up the courage to try it again, ha ha!!!  :-D  i've been getting waxed since i was about 15 though cos i've always done surfing, surf lifesaving, etc and practically live at the beach and was there everyday even in school so over time i've gotten used to the pain and noted the techniques that the ladies use when they're doing it, so i kind of just copy their style and use a hand mirror so i can get everything, its not that bad once you get used to positioning yourself, etc.

i feel kinda silly for sharing so much information about it....but just trying to share my experiences i guess so that anyone who's looking to go down that path can have a first hand account  :>

Hey Kate!  found the ingredients list on the web.  the product is Nair Salon Divine Microwavable Body Wax.  here are the ingredients:

Glyceryl Rosinate, Paraffin, Hydrogentaed Butylene Ehtylene Styrene Copolymer, BHT, Fragrance.

i'm not sure if any of this is not vegan, but i don't like the sound of the hydrogenated bit... :-\

I've used my epilator on my lady bits though, not for more than like, a tiny spot really fast. Oh well, one day...

Ooh, ouchie!!!  I haven't had any pleasant experiences with epilators.  I don't think I was using them right though, that could have something to do with it...  :D

I think the solution is to use an antique straight razor. (Not with a bone handle, obviously.)
That's pretty vegan. And it doubles as a weapon for self-defense, should someone surprise you in the bathroom!

veet
fairly sure that they do not test on animals.

Veet is owned by Reckitt Benckiser, who unfortunately tests on animals :(

Gillette had a moratorium on animal testing since 1996, but then got bought out by P&G... I emailed them a few months ago and never heard back (asking whether they still have the moratorium or if the new ownership meant they tested). Even so, it would be like buying Clairol or Herbal Essences which both don't have their particular products tested, but have a parent company who tests/the individual ingredients are tested.

My sister works at a day spa (she does the waxin' and the facials), and they only use vegan wax because it works so much better (she says). I'm not sure what type of wax it is though...
And their whole line of spa products and crap are vegan/cruelty free, because they're awesome like that.
She keeps trying to get me to get a facial  ::)
