NOW taking Theme suggestions for VW's next Gift Exchange

My dearest vegwebbers,

All of the general harassment I've been getting in the "aimless chitchat" thread has brought me to this post.  So.... How about it?!  Write down your gift exchange theme ideas here.  After I've gotten a bunch I'll make a poll to determine the type of exchange we should have. ;)b

Much love from your designated organizer,
LLG

PS: Future-land VWer's; I'm sorry that I am a day late for you guys. :bear2:

i think the local idea would be the same as ethnic/nationality. so if "local" to you means maple candy, or chinese stuff, or if you're drawing a blank but you're Cuban and can send whatever they're known for, etc.

Also... isn't that a daikon radish? It goes in miso soup, or cut into rounds, boiled forever, and served with sweet miso sauce.
radish =/= turnip. turnips are horrible, radishes are acceptable. see, big difference.

I've never seen/heard of a daikon radish.
but at our shop they're labelled as 'chinese turnips'.
so... yeah. I dunno!

they're the same thing. Sometimes pickled daikon is labeled "pickled radish," even by Japanese brands (though daikon is the Japanese name). It's sorta bitter and spicy, so I could see considering the bitterness and the size it would be labeled a turnip.
However, I hate turnips, and am ambivalent about daikon. Therefore, it is definitely a radish.

I was thinking daikon too.

This is a turnip: http://clapso.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/netroots_turnip.jpg

also! there's that minimalistickies recipe on here of sliced daikon + maple syrup. You could do that, and report back to us on how gross it is/n't.

(sorry llg for the aimlessnes. to make up for it, here's a theme idea:
green and orange, a la vegweb colors
there.)

We can send each other carrots!

ha. I'm too scared to touch the things, I'm definitely not brave enough to buy one, and if I did, I'd be too scared to post it, but probably brave enough to put in a box and post it to someone...

I used to send a potato to one of my mates every time I went out of town.  No note, no return address, just a potato.
Funniest thing was that one time it got stolen out of our letterbox because someone thought it must be worth something ... they obviously opened it, saw it was a potato, and gave it back like a week later.  Awesome.

I don't have any theme ideas but would just like to say I'm interested in the exchange.  I love Cali's idea of the Sesame Street exchange...because I'm a geek and like the Count.

I don't have anything to add except I really like turnips and that's all.

Ever wonder why there aren't turnip recipes in cookbooks? It's because they're horrible. Even broccoli rabe and brussel sprouts have recipes.

theme idea:
cartoons.

idk. I just feel like I need to balance the off-topic-ness.

I really like daikon when it's cooked until it's nice and soft and sweet. There's a vegan restaurant in boston with a wonton soup that has daikon. yum. it's too radishy for me when it's not cooked.

and yeah, local/ethnic... it's all tied together.

are people going to agree to stay within the spending limit on this exchange? because looking at what people send sometimes, i think damn, i can't afford to send all that so my gift wouldn't be as awesome. inadequacy never feels good.

Local and ethnic isn't tied together unless you live in a place where there are a lot of ethnic places.....which I don't. There can be things about the place  you live that have absolutely nothing to do with your ethnicity/nationalities. For example, I have a local tea shop so I could send people tea....has nothing to do with nationality because it's local. If I were to send someone something to do with one of my nationalities than I would have to go online because I don't live in a place where they have stores like that.

yeah, i meant more as a general topic... what's local to some people might be ethnic, or it might just be something the city/region/state is known for, or just something you find locally (like some places have those delicious vegan things one can only find online because they've got the bakery or storefront near them not that i'm jealous at allllll). Or one could go with their heritage if they like that better. I wouldn't really want to settle on one of these three (local, ethnic, heritage), because for each there will people who can't find anything... like someone may not be near any ethnic stuff, or where local things are pretty much just fresh, un-mailable things, or people who don't know their heritage or can't get related items (e.g., how much English stuff can I find around here? It's mostly marmite and Tetley tea, neither of which I would want to send an unsuspecting victim).
either way, one of those things would be something unique to you.
What to call said category... uh...
