How much do you spend on a handbag?
I was just watching Martha Steward and she was showing designer handbags that cost anywhere from $200 to $1599!!! :o I know the "rich" think nothing of throwing a few thousand dollars on a purse but I don't think the ordinary working person should feel any less a complete person because they don't have the "right" bag on their arm. It seems the trend in handbags is big, bigger and biggest , both in size and price but I like a smaller bag with lots of storage places for cards, phone, cash, etc. I draw the line, though, at spending what I consider an immoral amount of money on a purse. (I'm not trying to get a debate going a morality issue, that's just my thought.) I realize that normally a well-made handbag will cost more than $2.99, but $1500+....My last handbag cost $2.99. It's satin lined and quite vintage looking. I bought it at Value Village and think I got a great deal. What do you spend on a handbag and what are your thoughts on this?
I have a co-worker who will spend up to $600 on a handbag ($400) and wallet ($200). I used to judge her until I realized I spend money like that (when I have it) on camping equipment. As for handbags, I don't carry one. I walk around with my wallet and keys in my pant's pockets.
I think I spent about $7-$8 on one at Wal-Mart. There's no place else to buy a handbag in town unless you do want to drop big bucks on one! I think $200 on a purse is ridiculous and $1599 is obscene! There are a lot better ways to use your money than that even if you want to be vain.

WHY did they suddenly stop putting pockets in women's clothes a few years back? I don't always want to carry a bag, not least because there's a lot of purse-snatching where I live. But nary a pocket can I find, which means either wearing jeans (the ONLY pants with pockets now) and a jacket or, in summer--carrying a bag. Which is a bummer.
I considered buying a "classy" bag a couple of years back but DH remarked that it's tantamount to telling the purse-snatchers that you have stuff worth stealing. So I buy canvas or plastic purses at the "$3/$5/$10" store (so much for the five and dime!). I only buy a new bag when the old one is getting tatty beyond belief, or if I have to work at some conferences and want to kid people I have class. Haven't had to do that for a while, though.
In order for me to even consider spending more than $25 bucks on a bag (and I never, ever have spent even that much), not to mention thousands--I would have to have won a lottery prize. And be seriously deranged. Two grand for a bag?? It should be studded with semiprecious stones at that price...not to mention gold-plated.
I carry a purse once a month, it doesnt have to be very big so I dont worry about the trendiness of it, I just pick one thats nondescript and inexpensive.
My bag is from Mat and Nat and cost around 100 dollars.

Eh ... those pricey handbags are like any other fashion trend...Louis Vuitton purses, heart tag necklaces from Tiffany's, etc. They come and go and aren't worth the money.
I don't mind spending a little extra for a durable bag as long as its cruelty free. Think I spent under $35 for my pleather bag for work.
I got my nice, pretty looking, handbag at salvation army for about $6. it's new, and in good condition. I like them thrift shops.
no way would I spend $200, even $100, on a bag. even if I had the money.
I'm really not a handbag/purse kind of gal--I have a small hemp wallet that I carry with me places or I have my backpack, which I spent about $60 on--it was well worth it. This thing still looks new after 4 years of hard use and it's designed for women so it doesn't have huge honking straps on it that slide off my shoulders. I can also use it for camping/hiking (it's even in my avatar--I seriously love that thing!) I just don't really like purses. I always seem to forget them places and I hate lugging them around. If I need a bag for some reason, I just take one of my canvas grocery bags.
i don't even know how i ended up with most of my bags and purses... i have a bunch but i usually get them from people, for free from things i do, or from the thrift store. other than my backpack that i have had for over 9 years, i can't think of anything i spent more than $3 on.

Good point about the judging. I think most of us have things that we spend more money on than is absolutely necessary. My splurges tend to be hiking/camping stuff (especially running shoes and hiking shoes/sandals--I have a really high arch and am super picky about the shoes I wear for activities) and nice, soft bedding. I'm pretty thrifty with most other things, but for some reason I feel the need to have nicer versions of the aforementioned things :)

personally, i think that is is usually BETTER to spend money on things, as long as it is for quality and not just to be chic. you won't have to replace as often and therefore will be using less resources... it isn't so much about the amount you spend but how you spend it.
I will spend lots on a good pair of shoes or boots because I have "difficult" feet. :'( I can carry my piles and piles of money in a Value Village purse but my feet must feel good! :)
I love bags. My most expensive was $398. Why not splurge on something you love. I live responsibly, volunteer, give money to charity, and reward myself with a designer handbag once every two years. I do not see a problem with that.

thats pretty much what i was gonna say! my reason for never really buying a bag is because i never had a well paying job. but now that i have that job, i look out for neat handmade items that will benefit a person in need, whether its an artist or a group of women in a third world country. so now that i have some sort of income, i can splurge on neat artistic things that also help other people! .... i just havent found any yet. haha
and btw. i've seen mat and nats bags, they are neat! i like them, not something i would buy, but neat nevertheless.
I've had the same bag for probably 5 or more years. It's fabric, but it must be made out of steel because it is not worn ANYwhere. The handle is discolored from my hand (grease, I suppose--ew--but it's not that noticeable). I got it at Kohl's and probably paid about $20 for it. I like bags with lots of pockets so my stuff doesn't sink to the bottom OR rattle around in a heap.

everything that is expensive, even if i really need it, i put off foooorevvver. for instance, i still have not gotten my wisdom teeth removed because even with insurance the procedure is going to be over $2,500... i also have had the same running shoes for over three years and for at least a year of that i ran ten miles almost everyday.

my friend did some research on wisdom teeth, supposively only 3% of the population actually needs to get them taken out. we think its just a hoax for dentists to make some money. *shrug* i certainly am not going through with it unless its absolutely necessary.
i am of that 3%.
my top ones are in my sinus'... my bottom ones periodically hurt so terribly that i can't eat. woohoo.
oh no! : ( maybe youll meet an awesome dentist on the road that will do it for a lowered cost. .... uh... maybe. heh. although i couldnt imagine riding across the country after having major surgery. eek! bad idea.
