Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

I think I'm going to try and up my cals--I have been really low considering it's all raw fruits/veggies/nuts...maybe like 1500 +/- a day.

yes. and i really hope you are saying your low is 1,500 and that is not what you are going to aim for because you need more!

Definitely need more than 1,500. When I was raw, I ate constantly and still lost tons of weight (and I was skinny to begin with)... I know it is not easy to get all the calories you need being raw (well, it wasn't for me at least!). Up them cals! Eat a boat-load of nuts.

Hope you feel better tomorrow capture.
I am all new to learning this so I can give no advise.
Me I am naturally a larger build so I am not sure what skinny is for me is.
According to guidelines I would be considered underweight.
The only we have in common is the cold thing I can't seem to warm up lately.
Surprised I was able to stay outside as long I did today.

I hope you're feeling better today Capture.  I'm having a similar issue.  My blood sugar has plummeted and I was so light headed this morning I considered cheating, but I didn't.  It's really my own fault though.  I didn't eat yesterday and I really don't know why.  I just didn't feel like it.  How stupid is that?  I've lost the 2 pounds I gained on my pre-raw binge plus three additional pounds.  I'm down to 165 now.  I haven't been tracking my calories but I think I will start.  Seeing as I ate 10 avocados in the first eight days I'm thinking my calorie intake is probably fine, maybe even too high.

I feel better knowing we pretty much had the same experience week one--(light headedness, loss weight) Do you think you didn't eat yesterday because you have lost your appitite already? I've been experience a little bit of app--loss, but I'm still eating through them (mostly). The biggest thing I have noticed is that I don't have my nightly, manic food binge--I have a terrible habbit of eating frugally all day and then freaking out a night and pounding down like 500 calories--but on raw, etiher I'm satisfied at night or when I go ranging for my "binge snack" there is nothing that I want to eat that would satisfy my craving so I just go to bed--I think that big cal loss every night is one of the reasons I've been losing weight too. We will have to keep checking on each other Storm *lol* we'll be light headed air heads before we know it if we are not carefull--Oh, and if you wat to count cals I reccommend that cron-o-meter that I use--I know I've put the link up several times on this thread!

Sadly my low is a lot lower then that--more like 1100, so for me if I could even just stay at 1500 would be good! It sounds low, but remember 1500 cals is like 15 pieces of fruit--that's a lot, and also, I am seriously tiny 5'2/108 my BMI is 19.8 and my BRM is only 1285!! But yes, I know I should probably be at 1700/day with the heavy training I do...*blerg* I'll work on it :)

OK--so I just ate a lovely puree for breakfast! The flesh of a whole acorn squash, 1/2 a mutsu apple and 1 banana with some cinnamon and pecans. It was quite tasty--not as sweet as the November Porriage--it was just deeeelightful!

I also made a great salad dressing yesterday

Carrot juice (a little more than 1 cup)
2 dates
2 tbls soy sauce or nama shoyu
1 tsp ground mustard

Really tasty--I made it for a salad that had spinach, chinese cabbage, mandrian ornages, and pine nuts--really tasty!!!

I think that's definitely it.  I just never got hungry yesterday.  I'm still not, but because I was so dizzy I did eat a tangerine this morning.  I didn't even bother to bring lunch to the office with me.  I've never lost my appetite like this before.

I think I did bookmark that chrono-meter link, but I forgot all about it.  Thanks for reminding me.

I hear ya--I know my app-loss gets pretty bad on raw, the thought of eating just becomes so unapealing--even cooked food. I think it's curious it's happening so quickly into Rawliday--I wonder why that is? Well, we gotta keep eating...I'm packing lara and raw revolution bars with me where ever I go so at the very least I'm eating a couple of those--I also pre made several contaniers of soup so they are easy to grab and are tasty--I know sometimes I just don't eat because I know it will take like an hour of hard work just to get one stupid meal together...I feel like I'm saving my energy by just skipping all that! *lol* Come one Storm--I'll motivate you to eat and you can motivate me!!!

WE CAN DO IT!

500? That's not a binge - that's a meal!

500 x 3 (if you do 3 meals a day) is only 1500 calories....... That's a healthy amount for a meal if you snack after lunch and after dinner (which on raw is not a big deal). Also, you guys may be losing your appetites due to a LACK of nutrients (iron deficiency can cause this among others). What all are you guys eating in a day (as in variety)?

My typical day I ate something like this:

breakfast:
Two green smoothies (about 3-4 cups of spinach + fruit, nut milk, water, dulse, etc)
Raw cereal or some kind of breakfast bars I made

Snack on nuts/seeds/dry fruit or something like that

Lunch:
A huge salad
Crackers, snack bars, or some nori chips (raw)
Usually a sandwich/wrap with avocado, sprouts and other goodies

Snack again

Dinner:
I would almost always make some kind of dish/recipe, if not a sandwich/wrap
Huge Salad #2

Green smoothie #3 after dinner

I lost a lot of weight. I went from 165 to barely over 140... Once I lost the weight, I stayed at that low weight.

In my case, probably not enough variety.  Usually a couple of pieces of fruit in the morning, maybe salad or guacamole for lunch and gazpacho or some other raw soup or zucchini pasta for dinner.  I started out eating more but I just don't want food now.

In a typical day I eat:

Breakfast is either november porriage (or a similar puree) or a banana smoothie

after training snack is a lara bar or a raw revoulution bar

Late lunch/early dinner is a giant salad, maybe some raw soup or vegi noodles

Snacks are whole pieces of fruit, some dried fruit and nuts

I know I don't eat enough, and like Storm--I'm just not interested in food right now either...

Today I have to confess to doing something really gross too--when i got home from school I knew I had to eat but I didn't want to and the physical act of chewing just seemed awful--well i had this giant spinach salad that I wanted to eat up--so I ran it through my juicer and drank it instead of having to chew it...it was pretty foul and now more than ever I don't want to eat *sigh* maybe I'll feel better tonight and eat some soup. We'll see.

In good news--I have not dropped below 108 lbs! Bad news--I am really sore for some reason and I feel physically broken from my training today...

The past few hours I am on a hunger spurt.
Have not been hungry all day till I stopped working.
Had some pureed cauliflower  and a big mixed green salad for dinner.
Try and spice that one with out cooking it.
Seem to remember I do not like cauliflower.
Bought some apples from NY that are so small.
Like miniature apples.
They are not bad.
Right now I am eating probably the worst orange I ever got.
Flavorless garbage.

Still looking for those raw bars but I can not find them around here.
Just want to get one to try.

I'm going to say that you guys are definitely not eating enough and thusly not getting enough nutrients. If your body feels run-down, your brain fuzzy, lightheaded, and you're not hungry... it's safe to say. And this is not good. Especially if you continue to not eat.

When I started raw I had the same problem. I just didn't want to eat. I am not sure why, but I think it is because my body was not used to eating this way and, you have to admit, a lot of raw stuff just isn't as delicious.

For breakfast (at least) realllllly try the green smoothies. If you include spinach, this will put a lot of nutrients in your body. I used to drink two HUGE ones every morning, and sometimes have to gag them down after drinking most it at first. Then I started craving the fuck out of greens of any kind. If you continue to just not eat because you don't feel like it, you will feel worse and worse and worse. Which is counter-productive to the whole point in going raw.

I am learning by trial and error.
Did some reading today so I have a little better understanding now.
Still learning. I enjoy the challenge.
Not trying to be unhealthy on this adventure just trying to balance myself.
I just have a little food processor I use to make smoothies. Works fine.

I know you're right about this and I'm trying to make myself eat.  Yesterday I had a tangerine in the morning, an avocado later and a small salad in the evening.  Not nearly enough, but I didn't really want any of it.  I'm not hungry this morning either but I have a banana and a kiwi and I will eat them regardless.  Considering my weight, it won't hurt me to miss a few meals, but Miss Capture....you must eat or you will blow away!

I tend to agree. Storm, your diet is very unpredictable and I am seeing that it is deficient. (Mine too)

I am defintely going to start trhowing spinach into my regular morning smoothie--you can't even taste the spinache if you load up on berries too!

I actually feel really good this morning and last night my appitite returned and I had a giant salad with tomaotes, peppers, avocado, I also made banana ice cream and enjoyed a handful of nuts! So it seems like I rebounded nicely. I have also been trying to drink at least 1/2  of a kombucha everyday--talk about having to choke down something...*sigh* those things are Gro-ooos!

I have had sprout success! I got a whole jar of alfalfa sprouts and I am not makeing sprouted bread with it! I combined it with carrot pulp, ground flax, agave and a wee bit of EVOO and I now have 6 nice sized slices of bread drying! When I get home I'm going to puree some strawberries and blueberries for "jam"! I'm starting another jar of sprouts today and will make a savory sandwich bread with the next batch!

Miss Capture....you must eat or you will blow away!

I'll buy an anchor...

WTF. WOAH. Kombucha is like the most delicious drink in the world! Especially the Synergy brand. My favorites are the grape, green algae, and this red one I don't remember what flavor it was... maybe watermelon... I dunno I know it wasn't strawberry. You're crazy ms. capture.

Eat the hell out of those sprouts. Very good for you.
