Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

It was my pleasure to find it a good home.  Enjoy.

I've been neglecting this thread. My consumption of fruit is going up now that it's nicer out, I don't feel like cooking and I'm having major fruit cravings. I've flown through two boxes of clementines in two weeks (I wasn't the only one eating them).

And in sad news, my ancient juicer broke. I guess it's time for me to move up in the world of juicing.

I've been negletful of this thread too....my bad.  I'm sorry about your old juicer (RIP).  What are you thinking about moving up to?

So last night I made myself a Greek salad and then decided I wanted soup.....so I put it through the blender and voila: soup!

Where are all my raw friends and how are you guys doing??

I've been working on starting up a co-op/buying club in my area specifically for produce. i'm hoping to make great quality organic produce available straight from farmer's (for the most part). other than that bored with my fruit choices as of late.

Craploads of fruit!

I probably won't get another juicer because I'm about to move into on-campus housing and they don't allow things like that. Even in the houses!

Me too Hespy.  I've about had it with bananas and grapes.  I've been picking up some nice mangoes lately and I'm so looking forward to summer peaches, nectarines, plums, and watermelon.

That sucks Minke!  I remember on campus housing back when I went to school in the Mesozoic.  We had to keep our portable plug in burner and coffee pot in a trunk in case of dorm inspections, but I can't believe they won't even let you have it in the houses.

Picked up some awesome mangoes today, along with some bananas and a couple coconuts. Haven't been doing anywhere near as much raw foods as I'd like to, but that's about to change. I'm working up to starting a juice fast starting the first week in June and plan on being high raw at least 10 days prior, and up to 10 days after.

Been juicing every day, and only eating one solid food meal a day for past 5 days.

I just got a food processor! I've been told there's a way to juice stuff in it using a cloth to squeeze the juice out after it's been processed. Am I remembering this correctly? Anyone know if I have to add water to the mix and what would be the best fruits/veggies to do this with?

You can make a thick blended juice with a food processor. Since the pulp is not extracted they are thick and have lots of fiber. Use juicy fruits and/ or vegetables. Make sure to remove the seeds and if it skin first. Watermelon and cucumber are a good combination to me. Other examples of fruits to use are; Peaches,Melons, Cantaloupe, Grapes, Kiwi. Tomatoes are good to use as thick juice. Just add your fruits to the food processor and blend for about 3 minutes until really smooth and add some water to thin it out a bit. I haven't heard of using a cloth to squeeze out the juices after the fruits are processed but it might work. Let me know if it does.

i would use a nut milk bag if you want non-pulpy juice... i don't think you would have to add water unless it was so thick it wasn't blending

I've never even heard of a nut milk bag before!

You can also use a couple of layers of cheesecloth if you can't get a nut milk bag.

I was planning on using cheesecloth if I could find it.

I have been eating a lot more raw now that it's finally Spring!  I feel awesome.  I love when I crave green juice, smoothies, salads, etc.

I ordered the new book Going Raw (http://www.amazon.com/Going-Raw-Everything-Lifestyle-Revolution/dp/1592536859/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305640193&sr=8-1) on Amazon today.  Can't wait to get it!  The recipe for Ice Box Chocolate Chip Cookies is available through the "Search Inside" feature, so I just made those a little bit ago & they are AMAZING!  So easy, and so good, especially straight from the freezer.

I have also been eating a lot of spring rolls with almond butter ("peanut") dipping sauce.  The spring rolls aren't 100% raw because of the rice wrappers - but they're my favorite way to transport raw veggie goodness into my mouth!  I feel like I could live off them forever.  SO DELICIOUS.

I love this time of year in Tennessee! Veggies and fruits are looking great at the Farmer's Market, and I yearn to eat healthier and work out more. Though it also makes me miss the warmth and availability of great produce year-round in California. *sigh*

nut milk bags are less than $10 ordered online and i think they are easier to use than a cheesecloth... i dunno

I agree, Amy.  I hate using cheesecloth now that I know how easy it is to use my nut milk bag!

Cheesecloth definitely works, but a nut milk bag is worth investing in eventually, IMO!  :)
