Natural alternative to antibiotics?

I'm wondering if anyone knows of some natural alternatives to antibiotics.

I have this lump on the front of my neck (not my thyroid, its higher up) I had it a little over a year ago following an illness & I wen to the Doctor, she prescribed me antibiotics & sent me to get an MRI just in case & it turned out to be an infected cyst on one of my salvitary glands. The antibiotics cleared it up, no big deal, but she did say if it go to be a reocurring problem, I should go to a specialist & have it drained.

I think I remmeber getting it again & it went away on its own. Now after this latest flu, its back. I'd rather not go on antibiotics because I feel they don't really help your body learn how to fight off infections. I'm trying to get enough sleep, not exercise too much, really eat well & lightly massage it. Is there any other advice out there?

well, you could try going to an acupuncturist.... alot of times they can drain the infections using acupunture and prescribe chinese herbs with anitbiotic properties. it has worked at time for me, I ususally just have to suck it up and take the nasty antibiotics.... That being said I have immune system problems so. I would definatley give acupuncture try.

wow thanks for all the info! I'm going to check out some of those supplements at WFs, esp. the silver, but I did call & make an appointment with my Dr for friday, so if it seems to get worse, I'll see her. Any improvement & I'll cancel!

I had full bloodwork done in April & was fine. I think my ups & downs are from trying to train too hard + not sleep enough + not eat well + drink too much. So I'm working on that. I also have a friend who is into holistic medicine. not acupuncture, but massage therapy & oils & nutrition, so I'm goign to try to get more regular advice from her.

You've gotten some great advice!

I would like to add that grapefruit seed extract is a great natural antibiotic. My mom took it when she got bit by her dog once. It got infected and she even had the red line going up her arm! She took the GSE and it healed it right up! http://www.nutriteam.com/index2.html

My family swears by natural/homeopathic remedies.

Also, check out http://www.nativeremedies.com They have a search bar, so just type in what you're looking for. They have tons of natural remedies.

Hope you feel better! :)

I'm gonna have to put up some resistance to the silver. I've read a few articles in the medical journals I read, and yeah, it can cause some pretty scary side-effects, and it's never been proven to do anything when taken internally.
I'm a HUGE fan of garlic. When I start to feel a sore throat, I immediately start taking garlic pills. I rarely get sick.

Pink, Thanks for the concern.  Those do look like scary side effects, but it didn't talk about how much silver those people were exposed to. There are dosage recommendations on the bottle & I don't plan on going over them.

Neem might help.  I have a small tree and use its leaves to treat lots of things, from colds to skin problems.  Here are 2 of many sites about it:

It tastes awful.

yes, i have to agree w/ the concern over silver...its a trendy supplement that comes in and out of favor through the years. It builds up in the body...so even a small  amount, over time, will affect you. (they used to use this in the turn of the century.(arginate) .and u cdan see some pics of pple who looked "grey")There are some studies going on w/ it for use topically, but as i understand it, it is mostly for eczema type problems,

this is so weird that you mentioned this prob lisa...my bro and another person had a huge neck lump like you described. My bros was very HUGE, it was hard for him to swallow/ breathe.

I would try the acupuncture too...it would certainly seem to help w/ the draining...b/c presumably,. you are fighting an illness/ infection yourself and its only a matter of getting rid of that fluid.

mdvegan, have you taken the silver before? how much did you take? I picked up "soveriegn silver" as well as source naturals "wellness formula" which has Astragalus, Echinacea, Garlic, and Goldenseal, and a bunch of other things in it. The bottle on the silver says 7 dosages a day is a safe amount. I took 3 dosages yesterday & just one so far today. It seems to me the people who have turned blue from it really took a lot.

I have used it externally many times, but I talked to my mom (who is in the process of earning her N.D. )

If you don't my asking....where's your mom going to school at?

Just to update everyone: the lump is gone! I can still feel it a little bit because I know where is was, but it's not sore & it's not visible anymore. So I can cancel my Doctor's appointment! YAY! Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm off the silver now ( I only took 3 dosages a day for three days, so that's less than 2 tsp total) and instead of taking three of the wellness formula supplement, I think I'm going to continue to take one tablet every day.  That's what's recommened for "wellness maintenence" Thanks again!

Drinking organic apple cider vinegar is a natural antibiotic and anti-inflamitory. Tastes yukky though.
