low-sugar/GI help?

I recently stated watching my sugar/refined carb intake...any suggestions on mainting this while eating a vegetarian diet? I am ovo-lacto, by the way. Oh, and I LOVE sweet treats/desserts/bad carbs...how can I curb my cravings for these nutritionally-poor foods??  :-[  I am trying to kick the habit of always having a 'reat' in the evenings....

i just talked about this like 4 seconds ago in the summertime foods thread, but frozen green grapes - i had them as a snack last night and they completely satisfied my sweet tooth.  it's like they get sweeter when theyre frozen.

What sugar substitutes would any of you recommend ? (Not the artificial kind) I have never tried agave nectar or Stevia...are those safe/good/taste good?

those are both good.. brown rice syrup and maple syrup and good subs for refined sugars too depending on what you're using them in.

I had a hard time giving up sugar and sugar subs, so I went completely sugar and sweetener free for two weeks.  It was very hard, but then, when I had fruit again ( I gave up fruit too) it seemed SO SWEET, when before I thought it was very tart.  And the jam I make pb and J with, which has only half the usual sugar seemed too sweet to eat when before I didn't think it was sweet enough.

I had to do that with dairy too, I couldn't handle soy milk till my brain forgot what dairy tasted like.

I think it's healthy to have a treat every now and then so you don't binge on it later...if foods are 'forbidden' then you're more likely to 'cheat'. Don't give the food power, just be moderate.  ;)b Life is sweeter with some sugar!  :D
