horrified at excellerated weight gain

oh my gosh...im trying to settle down.......Im shaking with anxiety.

I gained TEN lbs in six days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not normal...I swear i have not been "binging" Ive eat maybe 1200 cals a day. I am drinking close to 25 oz of water a day (remember fluid phobia) and from what i can tell (having been a CNA for the past 5 years) I am not retaining water in my legs....

OMG OMG OMG! You do not even know how freaked out I am right now...I almost want to bawl.

zealia, the weight gain is good for you.
i am sure you are becoming more healthy and not getting 'fat'. please please don't let this make you start restricting your foods more.
hang in there.

If a pound is 3500 calories and you gained ten pounds in six days, that'd mean (if I did it right) that you'd have to have been eating nearly 6,000 extra calories a day.  Are your clothes fitting tighter?  Is there anything to suggest physically that you gained ten pounds?  It seems unlikely that you gained that much weight if you're eating normally.  Check your scale.  Maybe it's broken?  I think there must be a non-freak out explanation.

Ten pounds can be water weight but not visible in your ankles.  Calm down and realize that this is not horrific.  You are on the right path and just continue to eat healthy and take good care of yourself.

have you been exercising?  muscle puts on pounds, but it doesnt look it, obviously stronger muscles look pretty good!  : )

I empathize with you.  My weight has been up nearly 6 lbs. and as God is my witness, I have not eaten enough for it to be fat.  But sometimes the extra water weight seems just as hard to lose as fat!  I don't really have any advice other than to echo, calm down and hang in there.  Do whatever helps you cope with stress, a long walk, play with your favorite animal, mediate, etc.  If you're feeling OK otherwise, you'll be OK.

I was curious and googled "how long to gain ten pounds of muscle".  I found this site that looks like one of the few not to be selling "snake oil":

Kelsi, you're a dear but there's no way under heaven and earth, that someone can gain ten pounds of muscle in six days.

ok, first of all...BREATHE. Like HH said, it take 3,500 calories to gain one pound. Please calm down. You could be just carrying extra water weight, it doesn't always settle in the ankles (that's for our patients that usually have some sort of CHF, and they're somewhat immobile). Try drinking some green tea, it always helps me shed water weight. Do NOT let this make you do something crazy. PM me if you need to...

I believe there's an OTC diuretic too (in the event of water weight). Oh, Aqua Ban. there we go.

Before I've gained literally 1 lb per day when I go home from school for a weekend. I didn't eat 3500 extra calories per day either, crazy stuff, but if you take care of yourself in all the right ways it will (1) go away or (2) stay because it's supposed to be there!

Poop-weight! That's always my explanation. I wouldn't freak about that much of a fluctuation, I know it can be disheartening though. Maybe try graphing your weight over a longer period of time and weighing yourself daily, it puts smaller weight gains in perspective. It's pretty normal to gain and lose a fair amount of weight over the course of a day (and it can fluctuate during the month, too). After graphing I've noticed that I can change by over 5 pounds in a day, but then it'll be low again in the morning. Poop-weight, I tell ya!

Would it be possible to not weigh yourself? It seems like it's only causing distress. I personally don't see any reason why you would need to look at a number..but I understand it might be something that's hard to stop doing. Something to think about?

thanks guys...i took a little nap to help me calm down...I tried to think of pleasant things. I even made the decision to eat a small lunch even though I half want to starve myself till this goes away. Haven't quite gotten up the courage to drink anything yet.

I have not done any exercising, so I doubt its muscle.  :-\ I have some diarex here at the house and I was thinking about using those for long enough to see if it actually is water weight (pink I didn't know that it was possible not to have signs in my feet, so thank you for that.) I only have one sheet of them, so that is good. I used to abuse those suckers like crazy...having so few will not let that happen.I used to weigh myself like 10 times a day (no joke) and have finally worked my way down to a few times a week. I DONT think its "poop weight" as i have been having fairly regular bowel movements. The other thing that is weird, is that i was sick most of the past week and had very little appetite (i actually probally wasn't even up to a  full 1200 everyday...). I was even throwing up at one point (not on purpose) Normally being sick, I lose a little weight...not gain...Still I wonder if they could be related.

Seriously guys, thank you for the support. I was seriously about to have a panic attack. I think the thing that makes it so scary is that my doctors have all sworn up and down that something like this just couldn't happen....and my ED always told me it WOULD happen....and now, who looks like the lier?

I just gotta remind myself that my value is not = to my weight. I wont act crazy.

I need to find something that I KNOW the weight of to test my scale and make sure it is calibrated correctly. Good advice HH.

My beloved cat is dying of kidney failure, so kidneys are on my mind.  Please, please drink water.

It is okay, you are not getting fat...at least not THAT fast if you even are.  It would be like virtually impossible for you to gain that much fat that fast.

If you gain 10 pounds of fat in 6 days and assuming you burn 1800 calories a day just being alive as most people do, then that means you have to be consuming:

3500 cal/lb fat * 10lbs of fat/6 days = 5833.333 cal/day
Then you add your metabolic rate (rounding to the nearest whole number for clarity): 5833 cal/day + 1800 cal/day = 7633 cal/day

So you would have to consume ~7633 cal/day to gain that kind of weight.

Somehow I doubt you are eating that much.

I would suspect that it is water wieght gain...are you due for TTOTM?  I always gained like 10 lbs when I was due but it was water weight, not fat.

Oh!  By the way, I heard that NOT drinking water can cause you to retain water.  Something about our bodies think that we are going into some kind of a dry spell and not have access to water so it retains it for survival purposes.

Exactly. Same thing with starving yourself to lose weight. The body thinks it's being starved (duh, cause it is), so it holds on to fat stores, instead of burning them off as fast as they do normally. Same thing with water.

Don't forget, your weight is more than just fat. And muscle. And water. It's bones, and tissues, and organs. Dude, have you ever seen a liver!? It's HUGE!! I used to obsess about my weight, back in my ED days, and then I went and had one of those fancy-ass body analysis thingys done. I have some seriously heavy bones! And when I had gallbladder surgery in November, my surgeon (ha, and the radiologist that reviewed my ultrasound) made sure to tell me that I have a "generously" sized liver. Don't focus on the number, it can fluctuate so much day to day anyway. I told Capture this last night, I did my scientific research (I weighed myself at work a bajillion times one day), and from the time I woke up, til the time I went to bed, my weight fluctuated 7 lbs. In one day. Relax my dahling. Have some tea, or a vitamin water.

Zealia, when I gain that much in a week, I take that as a cue from my body to make sure I'm well stocked in feminine products!! The longer amount of time between periods, the more weight I gain the week before.

it most likely is fluid. are you PMSing or anything? sometimes i retain two weeks before my period,so i dont put two and two together. I can gain *alot* too,ive done 10 lbs in one day!  but give it some time,it should go  down.
its funny that you mentioned you were sick, you could be dehydrated...if you were throwing up, your  body is now trying to compensate for thefluid loss.
keep drinking your water, butdont do the dieuretics...it'll only make it worse. you'll go swinging back and forth between retention/ dehydration.

OH! OH! OH!! I GOT IT!! Thank you L/A!! Chamomile tea!! It is a VERY MILD diuretic (so mild, most herbalist books don't even bother to add that classification), helps with nausea, cramps, not to mention anxiety! If you can have a cup a day, it will help with all those symptoms, and help with the retaining of water w/o further dehydrating you.

okay...i put on some jeans today (I was slummin it in PJ this past week due to not feeling well) and actually, my jeans wont stay on my body....very odd...they just slide right off...

Much less freaked out now. I shall try to drink a little more to rehydrate...maybe even pick up that chamomile tea hanashi mentioned. And...I COULD be retaining water cause my period is like, two weeks a way- though Ive never retained so much in the past...but my periods get wacky sometimes...and I'll have like, two in one month. Its exasperating, but whats a girl to do. (and no, its not "spotting" during ovulation, its a full blown second period.) TMI much?
