Cigarettes

Okay, this might not be news or debate... so I apologize if its in the wrong section...
but somebody please tell me things about cigarettes that make them non-vegan that way I can completely quit.
Health doesn't scare me enough, and at least I stopped eating dairy once I realized the vegan extreme to it.
Thanks.

Thanks again!
Haha.  Today it seems like I'm craving the pack even more because its a sunday and I'm bored.  I just got done scrubbing my house and doing some assignments... and I'm not hungry so I don't want to make anything.
But I'm withholding because I can imagine my throat feeling that sore way it feels.
And I also used to feel a pinch in my upper arm that is now gone... so I'm trying to stay positive with that.
Also the vegan idea that only one kind is vegan... and I'm not about to spend that money.
Thanks!

I've heard that cigarette tar is actually a ground up liquid of spleens, snouts, throats & tongues.  Factory farms sell it to tobacco companies at a discount price.  Will that work?

for real?!?!!? that is so gross....if it's true....i'm working on a pack of american spirits right now....i've been smoking for about 5 years now...the only time i ever quit was when i was pregnant/breastfeeding. it was stupid of me to ever pick up another one....but i did...i really want to quit because i know it's bad for me...but i love smoking. lame, i know. but if there is freakin spleen juice in them, i think that will be enough motivation!  :o

No, no...that list of parts is actually what is in hot dogs.  For real.
But if teade is reading this, YES, it's true.

Yeeee! Another successful weekend of nosmo king for me! Weekends are much harder than the weeks b/c I drink more and am often around smokers more. On Friday I was hanging out with several smokers, and on Saturday AND Sunday my roommate was smoking around the house (outside, obv, not IN the house, yech) and offered me cigs. And I refused! Good on me.  :> :> :>

We can consider this a quitters help board!  lol.  Sometimes we need people to help us out, especially when others around us are the ones that help us continue smoking.  My roommate moved out and that's when I was done since he provided me with cigarettes usually (I didn't buy them even!)

I agree with sharway about the weekend thing... And especially friday night (saturday was my 21st bday, you can imagine!)
I did end up smoking two cigarettes between friday and sunday (didn't buy a pack though!)
and today I feel like crap!  My throat is sore and I'm drinking hot tea right now to try and help it.
If anything, this is helping me NOT want another.

Thanks everyone!!

Man, I WISH cigarettes made my throat hurt! The only side effect they have on me is my lungs feel heavy....which sucks, but i'm so used to it, that it usually doesn't bother me.  :(  i guess it is just one of those things that has to hit you at just the right time, and you have to listen to your body and not ignore it.

Awesome about refusing Sharway!!  Happy belated 21st, teade!

Keep up the good work, guys!  You can do it!!  (you too, sirensong!)

:) thanks! today i've had 4...i know that sounds bad, but compared to the usual 15...it's a start!  ::)

Definitely 4 is better than 15!

I used to smoke maybe 6 rather than 11... but then the next day I'd smoke like 15....
it was sort of like my body was trying to make up for it!

I'm fighting it!  lol.
Oh, and it turned out I have a cold... that's what the sore throat was from..
Strangely though, it came on right after I smoked that cigarette, so I'm going to blame it for weakening my immune system because I haven't had a cold in like 3 years!  (I've been smoking on and off, quit alot.)

Keep up the good work!

i do that too! one day i won't really won't one, and the next day i can't stop smoking!

you know, the cigarettes might very well be what caused you to catch a cold. use this cold as a good reason to quit for good! this little discussion is actually helping me to really want to quit...so thanks!

good luck to you today!

my count as of 12:34 pm ---->1!

I recently went on a short trip with a friend who smokes.  We flew and during our connection she jumped out of her seat, raced forward as fast as possible and squeezed behind people grabbing overhead luggage.  Just to get off the plane and grab a puff before the next flight.

Smoking makes you rude!

Today makes one month and three days for me! No ciggies en absoluto. :D

ETA: Congrats Teade!
Also ETA: I have plenty of other things that make me rude... I don't need one more reason, hahaha.

I just found this thread, so I'll contribute my 2 cents.  I quit smoking Aug 3, 2007.  Unfortunately, I still think about cigarettes almost daily.  :-\ It is'nt so bad that I'm gonna smoke one though.  I feel so much better now that I don't smoke...mostly mental, though.  I was very embarrassed that I smoked and tried to hide it from certain people.  It was really the only think I did that I was ashamed of.  I hate hiding things.

Also, I went vegan for impact reasons.  Cigarettes are definitely not low impact.  Obviously, I don't have to tell anyone how dirty the tobacco companies are.

Plus, it was just a pain in the ass.  Cali's post about the girl on the flight reminded me of a time when I needed a cigarette in a bad way.  I was stuck in San Juan airport for 6.5 hrs.  Of course, the airport is a smoke free facility and I didn't want to go out b/c then I would have to check in again.  Anyway, all I thought about all day was getting to the Miami airport so that I could smoke.  Much to my dismay, my flight was delayed and I nearly missed my connection in Miami, thus, no time for a cigarette.  It was miserable.  At that point I realized that cigarettes had too much control over my life.  I smoked the $14 carton I bought in Puerto Rico and haven't had one since!

Good for you lotus!! I know how you felt about the embarrassment and hiding it-- I never smoked in the AM before school so I wouldn't smell like it during the day, but it was definitely something that I was very conscious of. Will my boss or fellow teachers see cigs in my bag? Will I run into parents when I'm out in a bar smoking? I know that kids are exposed to people smoking and it's silly to think that they wouldn't ever know about it, but I was extraordinarily concerned to think that they might see *me* smoking at some point.

Another party night, no smokes! I think it's okay that you still think about it often, lotus. I once quit for about 4-5 months and thought about it every day. Right now I think about it often, but not really that I want to do it, just that I'm aware of it.

If self-help books are your thing, I've heard really good things about Allen Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking. Check out all those glowing amazon reviews!

Congrats to all of you who have quit and who are still trying to quit.  ;)b

I quit October 5, 2007.  I think the first week is the hardest.  I spent most of my first few days reading about the effects of smoking and what will happen to my body while I quit.  I used lolly pops a lot for the first few months.  It was more like a cig because I had something to do with my hands.  I still crave it every once in a while.  Some days are worse than others.  It cheated  a few times within the first few months.  It took about 4 months for it to taste bad.  The last time I smoked, I was physically sick.  That was enough to make me never smoke again.

I tried cutting back in order to quit, but it was more like prolonging the inevitable (for me, anyway).  I tried to quit at least once a year for the last 5 years that I smoked.  It takes a while to figure out what works for you... I read somewhere that the more times you have tried to quit, the more likely you will be successfull the next time you try.  Zyban (Bupropion)worked for me.

Some people crave it for the rest of their lives, but it really is more like a passing thought than an actual craving.

Good luck to all of you.  Feel free to send me a message if you need support or have any questions to ask.  I found that being able to talk about quiting really helped me.

I am former smoker also. I stopped smoking May 19,2007 by force.Just stopped with two brand new packs.
Wow it was hard smoked for almost 15 years.
Would say about September 07 I tried a cigarette and it did not thrill me at all.
So now I love the fact I can run without feeling like I am going to die.
Live on the side of a mountain so I get my exercise going up and down the hill most days.
I was associating with allot of non smokers so that helped.
Now it just disgusts me to even smell it.

I'm waiting to get to this point-- the first time I quit, I never did, which I think is one of the reasons it didn't stick last time.

Five weeks and counting!

After 1 year and 1 month of being smoke free, it still smells good to me every once in a while.  I don't know if this will ever go away.  I don't like the way someone smells after they have one, but I sometimes enjoy the smell while someone is smoking.  I guess if it smelled bad to me, I would be one of those ex-smokers that are more annoying than nonsmokers... those people use to drive me crazy.  It`s almost like they have forgotton how hard it is to never smoke again.  I think they are the ones that are more likely to start again.  I try to remind myself how hard it was to quit, that way, I am less tempted to smoke again.

Just my 2 cents.
