Just curious. I hear people using both the soft "J" version and the hard "G" version. I'm not sure which one tends to dominate in standard usage.

I ran into an old teacher of mine at the fair. She was running a booth about celiacs and I said I might try going wheat free to see what happened. I told her I was vegan but that Id seen lots of recipes that were good for celiac patients with a vegan diet.
She started telling me that lots of people with celiac are ve-jun....
so I kept talking to her, slipping in the word as its meant to be pronounced...but she kept calling it ve-jun....

Same thing happens to me frequently. I'll say "vee-gan" and people will respond with "ve-juhn".

See, I don't get that...I mean, I didn't know how to pronounce the word when i first came across it because I READ about veganism. Nobody I actually was speaking with had a clue how to say it. the pronunciation guides int eh book left me more confused---But then I heard somebody on the bus identify them selves as vegan...and I had no more questions about it...So, yeah....I wonder why they do that, respoond with a totally wacked out way to say it when you are saying it TO tehm.

I say vee-gun with a "g." I've never heard it with a j sound, but I guess I can understand where it's coming from as vegetarian and vegetable have a "j" sound.
I did know someone who pronounced it "veh-gun" (short "e" instead of long "ee").

I think we should respond by calling omnis "omniwhores" and just look people in the eye as if we've said it no differently than usual.

I say VEE-gun. Maybe non veggies get confused because the word vegetarian is with a soft sound. Maybe they take the "veg" part from vegetarian and just put an "gan" at the end of it. I don't know. When I started cutting out eggs and dairy from my diet, my DH asked if I was going to be a VEG-juhn. :) ;D

As has been pointed out, I also keep saying "vee-Gan" and only half the time people get it.

I am a VEEgun, thanks so much for asking. I mean HERE we CARE and we don't think we are nutty at all, not unless we are full of peanut butter.
I have a friend in town and he is working on cars in my yard (mine too). I said, did you want some lunch cuz I don't know what I have that you would eat. He says, I am going to go out and get some MEAT. I said super, I'll have corn on the cob, a fresh tomato and a nectarine (which I did). He was trying to be cute and say something about you are what you eat. I said yes, but if we are what we eat, I am a vegetable and you're dead meat! That got a chuckle.
I reminded him, you don't say stuff like that to a long time vegan because we have heard it all have a smarty pants remark for all of it.
veeJUN they really say that???
