Positive people sick of negative people leaving mean, pointless reviews/comments

Is anyone else sick and tired of negative people leaving nasty, rude pointless reviews and comments all the time?  I have been using VegWeb for a long time, around 3 years, but only became a member a little while ago, and I have noticed over time that the same mean people keep leaving opinions and comments that no one wants to hear.

It is one thing to leave a bad review for a recipe - when a recipe doesn't work for you, its a great idea to let people know why it didn't work for you and the changes that you made to the recipe for it not to work, that way they won't make the same mistakes.  It is totally possible to leave an honest but polite 'bad' review that doesn't hurt the feelings of the person that posted the recipe, or turn anyone else off making the recipe.

However, it is another thing to come along and leave reviews that are mean and hurtful, especially when they have nothing to do with the recipe itself and are just a personal attack on the people who write or review the recipes.

It is always the same few people who do this, today has been a particularly bad day for these types of reviews and that's what prompted me to post this discussion.

The most common negative messages that I have seen are some particular 'holier than thou' VegWebbers who go into recipes that they never intend on cooking, usually for cakes, desserts, etc, and leave reviews that the recipe is just crap because it has sugar, flour, oil, etc in it and that it's just junk food and that THEY wouldn't eat it because THEY are so pure and fabulous and only eat pure fabulous things.  I don't understand why they review recipes that they will never cook anyway just so they can share their negativity and spiteful comments.  The hardest thing about being a vegan sometimes is trying to find yummy alternatives for things we used to love, so when someone comes up with a great recipe for some naughty pie or cake or cookie, it is an absolute Godsend!  When someone comes along and chastises everyone for eating 'junk food', frankly it just makes us all feel like crap!  Why should we feel bad for eating something 'naughty' every now and then?  As long as we eat properly most of the time, then we are all entitled to treats!  I say, BRING ON THE CHOCOLATE CAKE!  :D

The reason we are all members of VegWeb is because we are part of a minority group in society who have decided to stop eating animals and animal by-products for the welfare of animals and for our health and wellbeing.  Being a vegan or vegetarian is hard work because people who don't choose this lifestyle have trouble understanding why we choose to go down this path.  It takes a lot of patience to continually explain to people why you don't eat meat or animal products without being 'preachy'.  That's why we all need to stick together.  Whether you're vegetarian, vegan, a raw foodist, fruitarian, WHATEVER, we need to support each other and respect each other's ideas and opinions without getting rude and nasty if your opinion differs.

Now that I've got all the negatives out, I can focus on the positives.  There are some awesome VegWebbers who always stick up for other people who have had their recipes and reviews attacked.  Thank you for having the courage to stand up to these bullies!  There are people on here who's posts and reviews I absolutely love to read, who contribute so much to the site in the form of recipes, posts, photos, ideas........I truly value and appreciate your contributions to VegWeb, and love trying your recipes, reading your reviews and looking at your fab photos, there are so many inspiring people on here who make being vegan just that little bit easier!!  ;)b

PHEW!!!  Feels good to get that all out in the open.

HAVE A FABULOUS DAY!!!  :-*

Whoa. I'm glad I missed these reviews! I guess I'll have to go check.

:boooo:

I see! hahahaha. Oh, man.  ::)

whoah.  i haven't noticed these.   that sucks though.  no ones forcing people to write reviews or even try the food.  if one doesnt like whats in a recipe, one should not try it and therefore, not review a recipe that they have not tried.

hiimkelski, I totally agree, I do not understand the logic of these people.......    :o

don't stress about it too much jasmina - i honestly think that the more i read her "reviews" the more i think she's just not 'all there'.  i mean - it's obviously that she's not happy with herself so she's going on the attack and telling everyone else how bad they are for eating what they choose to.   i also wonder if she fully understands what people are saying to her because her grammer is a little off - so i dont know if she fully grasps the english language..

am i a horrible person for kinda laughing at it?

eta:  im not laughing at her grammer, im laughing at the ridiculous crap shes spewing.

To paraphrase Napoleon, one must laugh at life to avoid crying over it. So, ;D

I read those 'reviews'. What a tool. I dunno what her dysfunction is, nor do I care. ::) I just hope that no nice people got upset over what she said.

propinecone, you're definitely not a horrible person.  you stuck up for someone regardless of the feedback that you knew you would receive, and i completely admire you for that.  the majority of people on here are so awesome and make it so fun to be on this website that it really upsets me (actually, it really just downright pisses me off!!) when a small minority come along and try to ruin it for the rest of us.  i could not agree more with what you said, and your posts made me laugh  ;D  you're a star and thank you so much for sticking up for people against horrible bullies that are on here!!!!

heliamphora, i am in total agreeance.  i was upset at first but now that i know that other people feel the same way, i can definitely see the funny side  :)  i am just such a big softie and i really hate it when people bully other people for no reason and say mean things just to get a rise out of people, it really upsets me and i had to let it all out!!  there are just so many nice people on here who don't deserve to be spoken to like crap.  you're an absolute treasure for taking the time to write back to my post, i really appreciate it  ;)b

this is my first forum topic i've ever posted on here and i'm so sorry that it had to be kind of a negative one but i'm really glad that you've all contributed and that there are people out there who care as much as i do.  you guys rock  ;)

Wow, she's pretty snarky, isn't she?  I guess she's trying to make a healthier world through sarcasm.  You all know about the Report to Administration link in each message, right?  I have used it before when someone left this kind of inflammatory comment on a recipe review.  Yvette was happy to remove the offensive post.  The boards are one thing, but we really don't need that unproductive crap in the recipe reviews.

hey veggydog!  i've never used the report to admin link cos i wasn't sure if it would be removed or not or if i would be singled out for removing it, but if its that easy for them to get rid of those horrible comments, i think i'll have a go!  just think, if we all reported it, they would be removed quick smart hey!  i totally agree with you, like our mum's always told us, 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.'

thanks for your help veggydog, i really appreciate it  ;)b  have a lovely night!!!

hey jasmina....I totally agree with you.  I had just logged on today and noticed quite a few poor reviews.  I'm probably a bit of a saddo, but it really angers me when this sort of thing happens.
I have used the 'report to admin' button before now with no negative retributions - and Yvette has always thanked me for bringing such posts to her attention.

I checked this out, since I was mystified. My first thought when I saw all the "smileys" was "Startaurus is back."

I think that the person's negativity is definitely reportable since most of it is personal insult and has nothing to do with the recipes themselves.

Reminds me of a phrase I read somewhere: Some people can't feel tall unless they chop other people's heads off.

I've already reported her, but feel free to hit that report button!

In a way....the posts are hilarious, but annoying. Like my mom said, if someone is bugging you, ignore them and they'll stop.

I get really annoyed by those comments too. Although I did nearly die laughing when I made those microwave brownies and somebody went "OH MY GOD MICROWAVING KILLS THE NUTRIENTS!!!!! IT KILLS THE NUTRIENTS, PEOPLE!"

It is very interesting that she ends each post with "namaste" which means;

* "I bow to that inherent in you" ("that" here refers to divinity, or that which is divine')
* "I respect that divinity within you that is also within me."
* "the light within me honors the light within you" (in yoga)

someone that respects the divinity in someone would not take steps to bash them in the head with an intolerant stick!

good point, THHF!

reading through this particular person's posts has nearly made me sick to my stomach. I completely agree with J*B ...recipe reviews ought to have a little more substance than that. there is simply NO reason for ms. "luv" to post such bitchy comments in a recipe REVIEW thread, other than to make known her deluded self-importance and to "stir turds," as my Aunt Cindi used to say.

Internet flamers like this gal really must have some serious fucking problems...and coming from me, it takes a LOT to be considered truly fucked up.

...Reminds me of a phrase I read somewhere: Some people can't feel tall unless they chop other people's heads off.

Yabbit puts it a bit more eloquently, though.

"Please do not steal my recipes, or names of recipes, and claim them as your own. You must give me credit if I inspire you to do anything different with something of mine...."
^ yup...deluded and self-centered. *shudders*

fuck, dude, that flaming reminds me of the good ol' Greeks vs. Turks thread.

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) and so on...

moving along..... I am also disappointed in reviews that basically say, "I made this last night and almost threw up. I substituted with and then left out altogether, then added . OMG this sucks sooo bad! Why would You post such a disgusting recipe? WHY!?!??" and so on.
::)

I try to keep the policy that I can only rightfully review a recipe if I've not made any drastic changes--that is, if I haven't made an entirely different recipe! Even then, I don't feel justified in posting a review unless there's something constructive to be said about the recipe.
