Self Help Books

I work with adult students who are parents and receiving public assistance. Of course, they are all facing different issues in their lives; some of the things I have identified in the past are self esteem, parenting problems, lack of support, drug/alcohol abuse, domestic abuse, financial issues, lack of education, etc.

My supervisor has asked me to compile a library of self help books to have available. Unfortunately, even though I probably should, I don't read self help books. Aside from using google to search for ideas, I'm clueless. Does anyone have any personal recommendations for my library?

Thanks in advance to you all! :)

I would contact the heads of local support chapters and ask them what books or websites they recommend, as they are more knowledgeable in their areas.  Talk to the head of a local AA chapter, etc.  They probably already have a list of support items and can give then to you.

Warming the Stone Child by Clarissa Pinkola Estes it is an audio book, though, I thought I'd seen it in hard bound before....

She also has another one that sounds like it'd be useful for you as well: The Red Shoes

She's a Jungian psychoanalyst who specializes in post-trauma recovery and incorporates stories/myths of various cultures into her work.

I haven't read these....but I've read her book Why Women Need Chocolate and it was somewhat mindblowing for me. The last Christmas season, I made up gift baskets for all my female loved ones w/ this book, some chocolate truffles, various vanilla scented candles, and chocolate bubble bath! Everyone who's actually read the book has loved it as well.

These are the ones off the top of my head....I'll poke around my library and see if I can find more.
