man! freakin salmonella!
i JUST bought a 45 count pack of Austin Cheese Crackers w/ Peanut Butter at BJs on wednesday, i've had one (yesterday for a snack at work) and now they're being recalled because like 450 people over 48 states have gotten sick because of another peanut butter salmonella thing.
last time with the peter pan pb, i finished the jar just because it was almost gone when they recalled it, and was fine. and i just finished an 8 pack of the keebler cheese n pb crackers, which are also being recalled b/c they both come from kellogg's... but i don't know if i want to chance it. Dean said if it were him he'd just eat them but he doesnt want me to take the chance, but i wouldn't anyway.
i wonder if they'll be up on the news enough to take them out of the vending machines at work.... ???
i suppose you could post the recall notice on the vending machine.
i think Kelloggs recalled their crackers voluntarily, so you might be safe. But, i wonder if you cant find the lot numbers for ones that may have been made w/ ingredients from that factory.
From what I have read it's more than just peanut butter they are recalling. It seems that a lot of the people who got sick couldn't recall eating peanut butter so now they are looking into any product made with peanut paste. Though I do not really know what that is.

from the articles i read it was a plant in georgia(?) that makes peanut paste that goes into a lot of foods. and they haven't really tracked down a certain lot number, probably because the peanut paste goes through so many batches? i dunno.
they did remove it from the vending machines at work. i was surprised, they're on top of things. they were there yesterday.
we thinks that's what i had on christmas because i was EXTREMELY sick, had food poisoning symptoms, and they said most people that got sick were between sep 30th and dec 30th. *shrug*
Oh, Sariea, now that's scary! Peanut butter used to be my all time comfort food....but now...I just don't know. Do you suppose the organic stuff is still ok?
if you notice 99% of food recalls are for cheap processed foods.
I am not to worried about stuff like this.
Best way is stay from the cheap branded items
Probably with these crackers it would be more of issue with the HFCS which is made with highly modified inedible garbage corn
i'm sure the organic/natural stuff is fine. it's just for the austin/keebler peanut butter stuff from kellogg's i think they said famous amos pb cookies were recalled too also from kelloggs.
i just don't understand what is in peanut butter that causes salmonella ??? i'm gonna hafta look that up.
i wouldn't eat that kind of stuff, i'm eating a lot healthier lately, it's just a snack for the middle of the day at work i guess. i love pb.

DON'T DO IT. YOU WON'T EAT PEANUT BUTTER AGAIN.
I heard about it a few years ago and it took me a loooooong time to eat nut butters again.
wow... i dont know if that makes me want to find out what it is or not now. cuz now i'm kinda curious. i'll most likely not look though. i dont want to not enjoy pb
wow - now i really wanna know!
is it from peanut poop? ;D
Samonella is from the gut, so maybe contamination from manure?
All i read was that if samonella gets into the peanut butter, it doesnt die, like if you were to cook something or keep in the fridge (to stop growth of bacteria).
But i wanna know how it gets introduced!! Tell us MD!!!
or birds

It's like for eggs (not an issue for most people on here), but it's not the raw egg that can give you salmonella, its contamination from the outside of the eggshell. I,m glad I read this thread, cuz I've never heard of peanut butter related salmonella. Didnt even know it was possible. :o
rats
awesome.
rats
awesome.
That's not news, really--everyone knows there is a legal limit to how much rat droppings and hair can be in chocolate, right? And people still eat it...
So salmonella doesn't die if you cook it?

so what like, rats and birds in the factory poopin all over the place?
nice.
glad i just ate a pb n j
I mean, the fact that we're all still alive means it really isn't a big deal to our bodies, and thinking about it just causes stress, which is unhealthy. So, I don't worry about it. I like nut butters (well, two of them, so far) and the occasionally piece of chocolate, not to mention a few other processed foods that no doubt have rat shit...but that's what our immune systems are for!
The human body is an amazing work of art.
Sariea I found these PB crackers a while back.
No weird chemicals or HFCS in them.
They are a bit more in price than the Austin Crackers but worth it.
I found them at the Wegmans near me.

If you don't want to go there page
this was on the front page 01/16/09
"All Late July's products are 100% safe and our peanut butter is NOT effected by the recall.
Our ingredient transparency campaign mentioned in our last post is even more important in light of another major food recall. We source our organic peanut butter exclusively from a company in New Mexico, Sunland Inc. and will begin our transparency campaign with a detailed post about them next week. Sunland peanut butter is not effected by the recall. As always, if you have any questions about any of Late July's ingredients please call or email anytime."
