OK Thatsa first for me!!! I was lookingon beans and greens post about transitioning to vegan and someone said like " I oculdn't bea vegan cuzI couldn't even brush my teeth..." Orsomething along those lines. So whats theingredient in tooth paste that nakes i non vegan?
I have noticed that in Brazil things can be vegan unlike the states. For instance, sugar is just sugar and nothing else. Flour too... Its weird haha
For a long time I'd been using Arm and Hammer Advance White. It doesn't seem to have any animal by-products in it (and no fluoride), but I decided to switch to a natural brand just to be on the safe side.
So I recently I bought a tube of Jason Powersmile. It's supposed to be an all-natural whitening toothpaste. I don't know how well it works, since I just started using it. In any case, the tube says: No fluoride, no preservatives, no animal by-products, no animal testing.
Edit: Actually the Arm and Hammer Advance White does have fluoride. Glad I switched.
ooo k I see, well i wentand looked on my tube of colgate 12 hour whitening toothapste, and it did not have glycerine or whatever, but it did have sodium fluoride- so my toothapste i sok right? I'd hate to be cleaning myself with something that an animal got hurt from, seems sorta messed up.
I'm pretty sure that toothpastes are not required to disclose all the ingredients.
This thread is reminding me a of a tv show I saw- It was an episode of this cartoon called Futurama. The main characters win a trip to this Willy Wonka style soda factory. The soda is called Slurm & is highly addictive & delicious. Anyway, the characters sneak into the secret portion of the factory & discover that the soda is actually slime from a giant queen worm. When they act all grossed out, she says, "Why do you care that Slurm comes from my behind? Honey is from a bee's behind, milk is from a cows behind, and toothpaste- you don't want to know who's behind that comes from!!!" ;D
OK you just made me give a huge shout of laughter that caused my neighbours across the airspace to rubberneck (windows open). This reminds me of that cult film "The Stuff"--extremely minor, extremely funny, extremely bad. So bad it's good.
Which gives me an idea for another NVR thread...scuse me....I must just...
According to Peta's "Company's who do test on animals list" both Arm & Hammer and Colgate-Palmolive test on animals
(I use Dessert Essence toothpaste, which is baking soda based, no flouride, so sweetner, uses natural theraputic oils--which I hope are obtained ethically.....)
The girl mentioned by the OP who "couldn't" brush her teeth because of being vegan was probably referring to animal testing not being vegan; at a given grocery/drug store, chances are there are no toothpaste brands that are cruelty-free (regardless of ingredients). Unless, you happen to have Tom's in your store, which is generally inordinately expensive (6 bucks or something, as compared to three at TJs).

A couple of Tom toothpastes are sold at Target for 3-something.
I used to use some very natural toothpaste from Whole Foods. But, it was a small tube for $5.00. So, I stopped and started using plain baking soda. I haven't noticed a difference in terms of teeth health or whiteness since making the switch (6 months ago). The only difference is that it doesn't taste all that great.
I know I'm such a deodorant-less hippie. But I'm just gonna re-post this bit about how you don't actually need toothpaste at all.
Here's what our dentist told us recently about toothpaste FYI:
Toothpaste is not needed, and worse even gives a "false sense of cleanliness" due to the minty fresh flavoring. Brushing without toothpaste is perfectly fine. In fact you may find you brush for a longer amount of time that way! Which is better!
I finally got around to reading this entire post this morning...
I use Arm and Hammer Baking Soda toothpaste and I really love it. I have used it for as long as I can remember and all other toothpaste tastes nasty to me... I am curious though, what does Tom's taste like? I would be willing to try that but I don't want to spend the $ on something I am not going to like...
I have never found a Tom's toothpaste that is painfully minty (you know, there are toothpastes out there that taste like mouthwash... some make me cry ??? ). I think they've got three kinds of mint: spearmint, wintermint (or wintergreen?), and peppermint. I use the ginger-mint now, which is (of course) less minty and more gingery.
My boyfriend loves painfully minty toothpastes, though, so he has J/A/S/O/N "POWERSMILE". What a masculine name.

That's what I use. I never knew it was painfully minty! I guess I have a high tolerance for mint! :D
