The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

i messed my knee up somehow..... so i havent done a thing lately. :( really good to hear everyone else is doing good though.

oww - how many times through have you done P90X?

I did my longest bike ride yesterday! P and I have regularly been doing 1 loop+, which is b/w like 12-15 miles. I've done 20+ miles in a day before, but not all at once. So, I did 2 full loops! which=maybe 22-25 miles. The area is pretty hilly as well, so it was good. + usual walks..that's what I do!

this is my third time, with little breaks in between.

sorry about your knee, hope you're feeling better!!

Oww, I am in awe of your dedication to get up at 5 to workout. I can’t do anything physical until after noon. I don’t have enough carbs in me to move until then. :P I hope this week gets easier for you!

haha.  well my only other option is when I get home from work ~6:30pm, and that would mean not being able to start cooking dinner till nearly 8, which totally sucks, so I always prefer the morning.

I love the sound of your family track meet, so fun!

wow, that's a long way!!  I can't ride a bike 2 metres, so 25 miles is off the charts amazing!!

I had an absolutely crap nights sleep last night so felt  like shit when 5am rolled around and I didn't do chest and back : /
Will just do that and plyo back to back tomorrow morning and get back on schedule.

Shea - How'd the family-style track meet go?

If I don't maintain going to the gym, I lose momentum.  One coworker was supposed to go with me for the past two weeks, but backed out at the last minute each time.  I get off at 6p and another coworker corners me with work questions at about 5:58p, so by 6:30p I've lost my motivation.  Knowing she'll stop by my cube and knowing she knows I'm off at 6p and detains me anyway, I'm going to go to the gym at around 3:30 and then go back to the office sweaty and gross.

I'm going hiking with my new hiking partner next weekend, however, so I did a six mile hike today and maybe on Sunday I'll do a 9 to 10 mile hike to get ready.  Today's hike only had an average 7.2% grade.  It was pretty easy, so I'm hoping wherever we end up hiking isn't much more steep than that or longer than 12 or so miles.

it was a lot for me...

I'm impressed.  I couldn't run 1/4 mile.

wish i could do a mile... good job fb

my knee feels slightly better after seeing the D.O. yesterday, slightly tempted to call my hiking partner if Rivers dad takes her for one of the two days a month this weekend.

i feel like i'm always reading stuff on here like "I did 10 miles today. I guess I was a little off my game" and I'm like WTF CAN I HAVE YOUR LEGS

but yeah! it was the most i've done.

no way would you hear that sort of distance from me fb....I did 7km in Feb and that's the best I've ever done...which is ~4.4miles.....so your run the other day was pretty much up there with my very best ever.

That's a lot of talent at a single small track meet.  Wow!

I went on a 10 mile walk today.  Again, it was only about an 8.5% grade.  This Saturday, I'll be going on a 7 to 9 mile hike (depending on which fork we choose) with a 14+% grade (actually, it's kind of mild with a stretch of steep switchbacks).  I hope I don't embarrass myself.

10 mile walk is craziness!

See, this is what I'm talking about. That's ridiculous. There should be no "only"s or hints of disappointment with distance like that, even if walking. I'm completely beat after a 3 mile walk, 0% grade -_-

you're badarse.  No embarrassment possible! : )

The first meet went alright. Not great times, but I didn’t do terribly. (1:01 for both my 400’s) I got beat by some high school girl. But she runs for USA Track and Field, so I didn’t feel too bad. And I think she ran a personal best.
Last Thursday I ran the 800 for the first time ever. And I ran really well! I got beat by one high school girl, but I ran a 2:23, so I was happy. It was a really fun race.

sounds super awesome fun Shea!

but don't you walk for hours a day with Olen?

I'm contemplating stopping my regular p90x schedule and just doing what I feel like each day.  I've been struggling a bit with motivation and stuff the last few weeks and I think if I can get up each day and just choose to do whatever workout I feel like, rather than feeling like I have to do something in particular, that will be more fun.  Maybe I'm just a bit p90x'ed out.  But without a gym membership, I don't really have any other options, so I figure mixing it up will be the best plan...

Not like that! I don't even walk "for hours" in the summer. Way too hot. When it's nice, we walk maybe 2-3 hours per day, but that's in like 2 different walks. I don't know that I've ever walked 10 miles at once! I've hiked, but not just walked.

You sound like a normal human being! I didn't imagine you ever struggling with motivation. Welcome to our world, super woman.

haha, I don't even know if motivation is the right word.  I want to exercise, but I don't necessarily want to do what I'm 'scheduled' to do on that day.  Actually, what I really feel like doing a lot of the time lately is going for a run, but I am just not so much a fan of running in the dark, and the only times it's not dark, I'm at work. boo.

I would like a spare 2-3 hours a day to go walking with a doggie.  Oh, and a doggie to go walking with!  : /

oww - You've done P90x in order how many times?  You're completely allowed to change it up by now.

fb - I like walking.  I can't run 1/10th mile.  Your 4 miles seem like 40 to me.  I'm so impressed by that.  I'm going out multiple times a week now to make sure I'm ready for my hiking partner hike on Saturday.  I want her to want to do Mt. San Jacinto (16 mile round-trip at an average 10.5% grade at 10,000 feet) with me at the end of the summer.  What we're doing on Saturday is more steep (9 mile round-trip at an average 15.5% grade at 8,000 feet), but half the distance and at lower elevation, so first endurance impressions are really important.

ac - It was 85 F (29.4 C) today with a breeze.

Over lunch today, I decided to try the stairmaster... ouch.... switched to lifting lower after fifteen minutes, went too heavy and got a little sore... then I came home and lifted upper, and then I ran like six or seven miles and did some abs.

It sounds like more than it really is I swear. I have no life outside of work and working out. Nothing else to do here.

Can I have your legs?

mdv - I'm no help, idea-wise, but I hope you find something that works.

But I have a race (just two miles) on Monday and I want to be ready for it.

:-D  Um... I do believe (minus today's shutdown) that you are absolutely ready for a 2 mile run.

Supposed to be over 100 here for the next 4 days. Needless to say, I won't be running outside.

Good idea, fb.  I went on my first hiking partner hike today.  It was so. hot. in Icehouse Canyon ( <- oh, the irony).  Sweat dripped off my elbows and my pant leg seams chafed my thighs.  I drank 100 ounces (3 liters) of water on the trail and downed a couple of more liters since then and I don't have to pee yet.  Because I was running out of water, I cut off the final 0.6 mile to the saddle, and kept it at the 2080-foot elevation gain 7.4-mile loop.  I'll post pictures on fb.
