The official menstruation thread

This is a place to talk about our periods! Not just diva cup related, but whatever we'd like to discuss/get help with.

My period recently switched from being towards the beginning of the month, to the end. I hope it stays semi-constant (schedule-wise). When I was younger, I had some cramps, then I was on b.c pills for about 4-5 years, and didn't really have cramps, I've been off the pill for about two years now, and I have pretty bad cramps the first couple of days/nights. They were HORRIBLE this morning.

I'm REALLY wondering what I'm going to do when we run out of our bottle of Tylenol. Tylenol stops my cramps pretty quickly. By "cramps," I mean the horrible stomach/back pain, the feeling like I always have to poop, the flushed feeling, etc. Before I've taken Tylenol it doesn't really seem to matter how I'm lying/sitting/standing...anything. I know yoga helps some people...I don't know if it helps me or not..b/c I don't think I've been able to force myself to do it when in pain. But, I can't always stop and do some yoga....I don't drink tea..I'm just not wanting to buy more drugs.

Anyway, let's discuss!

I got a cervical infection... I blame my Diva...I don't know if I will go back, because my Diva and I just don't get along.

This one of those sure-hope-my-period-comes-or-my-life-is-over kind of months for this girl. So I hope I can join this thread.

Did anyone else have the problem of having light non-painful periods that got heavy and painful when they went on birth control?

I'm the reverse. I had heavy, irregular, nightmarishly painful periods UNTIL I went on BC.

I'm so totally with you on the cramps. Can't fix 'em.

I only get a period every other month though. It's always been like that since the beginning of me getting periods. My friends think there's something wrong. Opinions?

Don't worry Courth, if it's always been like that I'm sure you are fine. Plus you are young & active and that can make your period show up less often and be very light. When I was in highschool playing field hockey & running track, it would just be 1-3 days once about every month & a half.

The more active you are the better your period is. I notice months when I'm not exercising much I have horrid cramps and my bleeding is much heavier.

mine are horrible. the cramps are so painful that most of the time i can't stand up or even sit up and have to be laying down on my stomach. for those few days i pretty much live with a heating pad attached to me. a few months ago i was doing the dishes and had such a painful cramp in my upper thigh i ended up on the floor practically screaming (thank god i was the only one home)

the only way for me to deal with it is pretty much skipping the placebo pills in my birth control pack and going 3-4 months w/o having one. last time i took vicodin leftover from a previous illness and i only had maybe 2-3 cramps the entire time, which was great.

i still have to get to the gyn to see if i have something seriously wrong going on but my job makes it pretty much impossible to get to the doctor

God, I can't remember my last period, it was probably at least 18 months ago.. sounds like menopause but i'm only 20!  I used to be slightly underweight (BMI 19. something) but I'm a healthy weight now and I eat really healthily (no junk at all, plenty of vege and legumes).. so buggered if I know why it still hasn't come.  I haven't been to the doc since end of last year (I know she will be cranky with me).. I am totally baffled and wonder if I am dying.. ???

When I first went on birth control, my periods became really heavy and my skin went crazy.  So I went to my doctor and he switched my pill to something with a lower dose of hormones...now my periods are much lighter and cramps are almost non-existent.  I think you just have to find the right balance for you.

FTR:  I don't eat sweets generally, but tonight I'm going to get ice cream for dinner.  I enjoy PMS cravings.  It's the one perk.

oh yes.  i had a salad for dinner last night, just so i wouldn't feel bad about my craving for big slices of bread slathered with peanut butter & jam, and pb & chocolate chips.  i was gonna make cookies, but i was too tired.

i did make cookies last month.  it's always at like midnight that i decide i want cookies.  i need to start thinking ahead for the day before the period.

woah! I leave for a few hours, and this thread is four pages long already!

So, uh....question for y'all:
Who else has gotten off of hormonal birth control (pills, specifically) after taking it for a significant time (say, 2+ years), only to start having SUPER heavy periods that last twice as long as usual?? I mean, I was kind of heavy before going on bc, but this is ridonkulous....like, I literally FILL my Diva Cup in 3 hours or less...and it'll leak out to let me know it's full, which I've never really had happen unless it was in wrong.  >:(

.........I always thought that it was a little suspicious how the pill made my periods extra short and extra light. Have I been storing up 2 years of unreleased blood and tissue or WHAT?!  :P bleh.

My doctor is concerned because I haven't had my period since last year. Tests showes my ovaries look healthy, but my uterus lining is thin and irregular in color.

She wants to perform an endometrium biopsy, if the progesterone she puts me on doesn't make me have my period....

eek! I hope everything's alright in there....and that whatever procedure(s) you may endure will go well!

I am going in for a Laproscopic Supercervical (Partial) Hysterectomy.  Meaning my surgeon intends to use only 4 small incisions to work instruments and a tiny camera into my abdomen.  Then cut and remove the uterus from the cervix and cauterize what is left, closing off behind the cervix.

Because I have fibroids, one half the size of my uterus inside and one outside (and I think attached to the abdomen wall judging from pains that I get) there is no guarantee of this procedure being what happens.  If need be he will cut the regular incision due to either bleeding or the size of the tumors.

My last period, at the beginning of this month was brutal.  I bleed so much that my immune system is compromised by the anemia and I (again) caught a cold that was going around.  The tiredness is horrible and despite taking iron I cant make up for the amount lost.

So, if you bleed heavily, 1oz (go menstrual cup!) per hour for 18 hours and then 1oz per two hours for 24 hours, go see a doctor.  Get an ultrasound, hystrosonogram (i think that was what the balloon test was called, right Pink?) and find someone to help you.  Fibroid tumors can be removed with a D&C if they are inside or they can be managed with hormones supposedly.  Due to my family history, age, kid status and ten year old tubal ligation, I went with the most extreme fix AND I had to change doctors to do it.  So its not easy but it is possible.

CW, I think the pill changes the lining of the uterus.  Its not storing blood, the lining is thinner.  When you go off the pill it may revert over time back to what it was like prior.  But seriously, it isn't holding it like a water balloon just waiting for the lack of pills to pop it!  My uterus is only 7cm in diameter.  It really doesn't have a spare closet to store it.

Good luck Saskia!  *hugs*

Wow, Cali....I didn't figure that was what actually happened to my uterus while I was on the pill...but it sure seemed like it!

but damn, I had no idea your sitch was so....bad.  :-[  Your surgery sounds really scary, but that could be because I'm a wimp about those things. Thanks for being so open and informative about it! I hope all goes well...keep us updated, k?

seems like a good time to make sure to have some cookies in the pantry for craving emergencies!

I made brownies. <3 to all those who have issues.

Cali, I miss the eyes in the background!  ;) I hope the surgery is flawless, and the effects are everything you hope for!

DH is going to have a vasectomy so I can get off BCP within the next three months.  I've been on them for 8 years without a break.  :o

Hoping that it's not hell without the hormones (although the hormones cause lots of other problems, so I'll take my chances...)

my dh just had one....noy yhat bad!

Thanks CW!  I hope your uterine lining stays reasonably thin so when you are off BCP the periods are not heavy!

My situation isn't too bad, really, and I have a great doctor to help me out.  I feel a little sad that LB will never father kids (with me anyways!) but I don't think its even possible at this point for me to pop out another one.  Plus we are having way too much fun to have rugrats.

Thursday can't get here soon enough for me but I am trying my best to stay calm and collected so that my tummy doesnt get all upset and I dont start my period early.  Which would suck, haha!

Eyes are back, just for you AC.  And thank you!!!

Vasectomies are great birth control!  Easy office procedure, more reversible than a tubal and less recovery time.  Yay!

i've been on bcp for almost 9 years without a break...  will this screw me up for having kids later?  at the clinic they told me that you only have to be off pills for like 3-4 months before you can get preggers, but i'm afraid that i've been sterilized from them or something.  i really really want kids some day, too.

I know a handful of women that get pregnant right after they go off the pill, there is no waiting period. Man, I hate when people give incorrect medical info to others! AP, the Pill is just hormones, so as soon as you're off, your body gets back to it's natural rhythm, ovulating and such, so you won't be sterilized.

Everyone's body is different though.  I was on BC for 2 years, and after I went off, I never started my periods back because of some underlying issues they didn't know about. Now I take Provera in hopes of jump staring natural periods.  If something does happen and you have trouble conceiving, your doctor should be able to pinpoint the issue and fix you right up though.

I was on them for 10 yrs without a break and I survived. They just told me to be careful not to get preggy the first 6 mos after I stopped because there's a higher chance of multiple births just at first. But I've never been told it would stop you doing it eventually unless there were other factors involved too.
In the end, we never had any kids. I guess it's true what they say, it's never "the perfect time" to have a baby. You either do or you don't.

Has anyone had this done or know anything about this?

Sas, I am going through the same thing!  I went on progesterone and didn't get a period, so then they gave me a combo of estrogen/progesterone and I got one but it was really light and I developed a blood clot in my leg.  It's been three months and I haven't had another period since.  I have a doc appointment next Wed so I hope they have another strategy....

Thank you. :)

I feel better after reading your response. Like I'm not alone and someone else has been through this progesterone crap too. My doc wants me on progesterone again to see if my period will be, well, a period. Not just the very light spotting I experienced when she had me on progesterone one time before.

I feel all hormonal and bloated during that time of the month but I don't menstruate. Not sure if I need to have that painful biopsy she described or not, or go on more progesterone, although that's what she recommends. A lot of docs will prescribe away without giving it a second thought, though. We live in such a medicated society.

Is the progesterone, and/or biopsy really necessary or not? Or is what I'm experiencing normal for someone like me?

I eat healthy(docs have said and blood tests have proven). I have a low Body Mass Index according to this user-friendly calculator.
