help me brainstorm-- winter exercise!
okay so here's my dilemma, i'm hoping some vegwebbers can help me find a solution!
1. I'm in high school, and so I'm busy 8-3 Mon- Fri. I'm also busy at very unpredictable times after school due to meetings, AP biology labs which are scheduled at my teacher's whim, rehearsals etc.
2. During the summers I really enjoy running or jogging near my house, but because of problem number 1 + cold New England weather + sun set at like 4:00 in the afternoon, I can't really do much.
3. A membership at the gym is fairly costly, but I suppose I could do it for the upcoming winter months
4. I want to start yoga but worry about cost, again, and also about committing to a time multiple times a week (meaning-- I'm willing to do say an hour every week on Mondays, Weds, Fris and Suns, but I can't always guarantee that I could do M, W, F 6:30-7:30 and Sun 9-10)
I'm not necessarily concerned about my weight.. just that I want to get into better shape, and loosing 5-10 pounds wouldn't be the end of the world, but it isn't my main priority.
Thanks :)
I made myself a hoop and hoop dance in the basement for about and hour a day. It's fun and I get to listen to music and be silly, plus my abs are starting to change for the better. I do it when I feel like it, so there is no set time. My children also have customized hoops so we do it together and learn new tricks.
Now that's something I think I'd really dig. (Besides disc golf...) ;)
Hoopy could you share how you made your hoop?
I'm not trying to derail the thread...should I PM Hoopy~d?

Thanks very much!!!
That looks quite easy & FUN!! :D
When I don't have time for the gym, I do Carmen Electra's Aerobic Striptease Disc 2: Fit to Strip. The other DVDs are fun, but not a good workout. Here's what http://www.videofitness.com has to say about this DVD...(Note: I use 2 lb. weights for the upper body work to increase intensity)
Disc 2 Fit 2 Strip:
I felt like I got a good workout. Michael carson is a good trainer and it was circuit like, had some creative exercises and was very pleasant to do. Michael instructed the whole routine, while Carmen did the moves with him and occasionally she'll do modifications. It worked the whole body and had 3 additional chapters which featured 5 minute isolations of lower body, abs, and upper body. The next day my buns were sore, i sure felt it in the area between the butt and the upper thigh. I felt like I had my own trainer and watching Carmen along with him gave me some serious motivation! There is a slight problem which is easy to correct, you do a one leg squat on the right leg, but after a few reps they somehow end up finishing the set on the left leg then he moves on to a new move - so i did the set on the right leg and while he was introducing the next move, I did the set on the left to make up for it. Overall, I believe it is a good intermediate lower body workout (standing & floor), but the upper body isolations didn't fatigue the upper body well since he used no weight (shoulder presses, rear delt flys, push ups, tricep dips, etc) so you would need an additional upper body workout.
I was totally thinking of that!
I have the box set, but the second one is the only one that provides an actual work out....but is severely less fun. I really had low expectations after doing the first one (fun, but the lowest intensity workout you can imagine), but that second dvd is a ball buster in comparison. The whole set really concentrates on the areas I prefer to work out (that spot under the butt, upper thigh; abs; inner thighs) and it's definitely an indoor workout....I mean, unless you're adventerous
I totally second the DVDs. There is a great series called the 10-Minute Soluti0ns series, and they've got yoga, kickboxing, Pilates, etc. etc. They have five 10-minute workouts on the DVD, and you can program them any way you like. Just a couple sessions, in whatever order you like, or you can do all five segments. So it's easy to tailor with how much time you need. I do the kickboxing one, and I really like it. All you need for it are 2- or 3-pound weights and a sticky mat (not really necessary, but it's helpful for the abs/core segment).
You can check all these DVDs out on Netflix now too, to see if you like them before you buy.
