FASTEST mile--new record!!

Oh my gosh, I know it might not sound like much to most of you, BUT...I ran my fastest mile EVER yesterday!!!!! I was so excited. My sophomore year of Highschool I did the mile in 20 minuets! I know how horrible that is---I can WALK faster than that now...but I have overcome a lot of health problems- I was not able to run (at all) before that.. By my senior year I got it down to 14 mins...

So, ever since then i have been trying to get my miler under 12 mins...for the past few months I have been getting so close...like a 12.30 and such...but never quite there...(note I d not run everyday because of medical stuffs...)

YESTERDAY I DID MY MILE IN 11:29

It felt so good!  was so happy I wanted to jump and shout and run around the gym... :D But I controlled myself.  ;)

Now I want o knock another min off! Maybe by new years? Speaking of new years...That was my new years resolution i think...whooo-hoo. I did it i did it i did it..

Don't listen to doctors who tell you that you will never be able to do something! I can RUN  :D

So, how fast can the average 21year old woman run?

How fast can you guys run?

Awesome news, VHZ!

In high school we ran the mile on Mondays.  I think it took me 8 minutes.  I'm short, so I imagine my legs looked like blurs to get me around the track every two minutes.  Now it'd take me a LOT more.  Well, I can't run again, yet.  I detached tendons in my feet by running and I can't do things that involve heavy impact on my feet, so I'm relegated to hiking.

You just didn't beat 12 minutes, you blew it out of the water! (I no idea where that expression comes from.)

Congratulations!!!

I remember when I first started exercising in college, I was SO out of shape.  I called my mom and said something like "I ran for 10 seconds!!" and that was a HUGE deal for me!

Yesterday I ran a mile and it was no big deal.  ;)  So I know how good that feels!  Congratulations again!

Way to go Zelia!  (That is such a pretty name btw)  Keep up the good work, one of the many awesome things about running is that the more you do it, the easier it gets!  If you need a virtual running buddy, I'd be up for that!  :)

Congratulations Zealia!  I'm new at running, so you're giving me hope!

I'm not sure how fast I run... we did "miles" in middle school, and my time got progressively worse as I got older! I didn't expect that, especially since when I started I was a pretty fat kid! I still remember my first mile was 10:18, and by the time I left the 8th grade it was nearly 13 minutes (and they made us do it over the next day if it's over 13! very motivating).

When I entered my sophomore year in college, I resolved to get in shape and get rid of the idea that I "can't" run (I was still in the mode of thinking that hey, i'm the fat kid, of course i can't do it). I run for a set amount of time instead of a set distance... I started at 4.3mph for 10 minutes and currently I'm at 4.8 for 30. I get in almost 3 miles, but I dunno how fast... I just know when it gets to 5mph, it'll be a 12-minute mile... I'm still aiming at beating my sixth-grade self.  ;D It'll be a while until I get there... but hey, I've got almost 2 years of school left, right?

Coolness Zealia! I can't run, or affraid to. I have athsma, and I feel like I would drop dead of an athsma attack after the first minute (I have to be careful training in martial arts as well). But my DH just took the physical part of his 2nd degree black belt test and he ran a mile and a half in 11 something. And he is 53! So there is hope that your mile run will be even faster ;)

Congrats!  Setting a personal best is always a great feeling. :) :)

I haven't run in a couple years... I destroyed my left knee from running (chondromalacia).  Hmmm... I'd rather not think about the past... :)

thanks guys for all your congratulatory proclamations! I knew I could count on all of you not to be like : "So?  ???"

Some of you can run REALLY fast! Thats awesome. I don't know if I'd ever be able to get down to an 8 min mile...I think after I get down to 10 mins I'm going to focus more on endurance than speed...I have no idea what I'm doing really and it kinda gets scary! Id hate to blow my knee out and not be able to run anymore! :(

I don't think I wear appropriate shoes either...I wonder if thats a bad thing ::) My goal is to be able to run in  a half marathon. There was this 14 year old girl who died of the same disorder I have and her family organized a race in her honor (she loved to run) and they used the proceeds to help pay for somebodies treatment. I was blessed to be the one to receive that gift. Know whats odd? I started running one night to catch the bus and suddenly  "discovered" that I could run...Id never been able to coordinate my body before. It was one of the most liberating experiences of my life and I couldn't help but feel like it was somehow part of Tara's spirit in me now.... Okay, doe that sound totally out there an weird?

Well, whatever the  reason...I DO love running now.  :D

your shoes do matter (i'm told). runners are also supposed to replace their running shoes every so many miles (i can't remember the number! it's probably the end for my sneakers anyway.) I was running on old running shoes when I started and I got tendonitis that lasted forrreeeeever in my big toe =( I almost thought it was a hairline fracture!

If you run often enough, the shoes are worth the investment... I manage to get them on sales usually (40-50), but my last pair was at an outlet for 15! Saucony makes lots of "synthetic" shoes.

:)  That's such a great story!

Working on endurance, your ability to run fast naturally improves too!  Pretty soon you'll be throwing down 7 minute miles in a good ole 10 miler and think, "I never would've thought I could run 1 mile in 7 minutes!"  Trust me, It happened to me! :)  Of course it took a LOT of running to get there, though...

You're supposed to change your running shoes every 500 miles.  If you run a ton (80-100 miles/week) it might have to be every 400 or so miles.

GOOD SHOES ARE KEY.  Think of how many times per mile your entire body weight is slamming into the ground with only your foot as support!  Running a lot using bad shoes will probably lead to foot, knee, and lower back problems!

You should go to a good running shop, and they'll be able to set you up with the right shoes depending on your level of pronation (the extent to which your foot rolls inward).  It took me a couple years and a bunch of luck to figure out the right shoe by trial and error...

With regards to good running shoes being key, you're so very right. I run an average of 5-6 miles a day about 6 days a week (or hike around the same distance on the days I blow off running). When you start running for long enough you can actually feel when you need new running shoes. Same thing goes with hiking shoes/boots.

Your also very right about endurance. It just gets easier and easier literally day by day. When I first got back into running I remember freaking out going up hills and did not run much faster then I could walk. I just kept doing it, and little by little I went further every few days. Over time my pace picked up and you just get into a "groove" while running....you stop even noticing how far you run. It's addictive. My body actually craves that I run or hike in the morning. On the days I don't, I have less energy and feel run down.

Another running tip: if you live in an area with lots of hills (like where I do now and where I moving to...there are NO flat roads or trails here/there)....take smaller strides...the steeper the hill, the smaller the step. When a friend of mine taught me that a few years ago...I noticed that hills became so much easier....to the point where they don't bother me in the slightest.

Congratulations  Veghead....and keep it up!

wow, thanks for all the good tips! I bought new running shoes on Saturday. They were $50 on sale and as a Frugal/minimalist...I feel a little bit ashamed. BUT I told myself it was a reward and that it was also preventative of injury! which is very frugal  ;)

It was SO easy finding vegan running shoes, I was shocked (well they are synthetic materials anyways.)! They are by Nike...they are called asics gel and have the letters ahar+ on them...I cant find them online right now...They feel comfortable. Unfortunately, I have to wear them for walking in and everyday use cause my other shoes have pretty much died and Ive been having a really hard time finding cheap vegan shoes (there are none at payless for some reason)

BUT the good news is: I set a NEW RECORD!!!!

11:15! I decided to hit the gym this morning and was a little nervous 'cause my times had been getting longer, not shorter. (like 11:39) So i told myself that if I ran a mile, as long as it was under 15 mins Id be pleased...but, i was really tiered so I pushed hard to get it over with and what do you know, a new record!  ;D The thing that scares me about breaking all my records so quickly is that I'm really afraid of having to out preform every time and getting really sad when I cant.  :'(

I'm thinking of keeping a log of my running...now that I'm not going to be working as much I will have more time for leisure activities!
