allergic reaction???

.

Went to the doc last time concerning this & he believes its stress/ anxiety (which I'm totally prone to in nyc).

It sounds like this has happened before, from your wording, is that correct?  That time, did you feel it was food related despite the doctors' diagnosis?  Do you have any other food allergies/sensitivities?

I've never heard of this reaction to nut. yeast (not that it doesn't happen, but that wouldn't be my first thought).  It happened during lunch?  After a bite or two or towards the end?  Have you had any soy since then?

Tomatoes would be my first guess, if it were an allergic reaction.

Lots of folks have wheat allergies. It might be worth it to get an allergy test or to try and eliminate one kind of food for a week at a time (wheat, soy, etc.) to see if you feel any different. It might be a combo of stress + a mild food allergy happening simultaneously--each aggravating the other.

ok. so a while ago & today when eating lunch my ears got all red & hot, followed by my face, arms & knees.  The feeling can best be described as a wool sweater- sort of hot & prickly.
I'm in an air conditioned building so it can't be heat related.  I work with interenational garments- but haven't opened anything new today.  I eat a very whole food diet- so what could it be???

This is often an allergic reaction.  And most often  reaction to food.
Allergic reactions with food happen usually immediately after eating/while eating or within 1-2 hours.  As someone who suffers froma lot of food allergies, I recommend going to see an allergist.  You can develop new allergies at any point in your life.  :(

And actually, to further comment on the above poster said, the way to 'home' test for a food allergy is to completely cut out one type  of common food allergen for at least one MONTH before taking out another.  For ex, start with cutting out ALL wheat (read  deep into your labels-that means no vinegar or soy sauce and other things with hidden wheat).  If you see no improvement, try cutting out all nut products for 1-2 months in addition to the wheat.  (multiple allergies are not uncommon so you do not go back to eating the previous things you cut out.)  And so on.  Realistically, rather than going through the tiresome  process of cutting out wheat for month 1, then wheat and nuts for month 2 then wheat and nuts and dairy for month 3, and on and on, it's much faster and much less hassle to see an allergist.  Although you should beaware that the standard allergist kit does NOT test for all food allergies.  Just the most common ones.

Case in point: I also have an allergy to sulfites - a common ingredient in medicines and wine, but there is no test for that.  After cutting out alllllllllllllll the other things I tested allergic too, we found I still had flareups to a bunch of random things whose only shared ingredient was a sulfite additive like wine or OTC medicine like tylenol.  :P

i would've guessed the tomatoes too judging from the first meal you described.. but since the 2nd one didn't have tomatoes i dont know.  I know that if i have too much tomato in a meal that happens to me.. like a whole bowl of tomato soup.  a slice on a sandwich has no effect.

maybe it is stress.  a while back i broke out into hives on my way to the airport to pick up my bf who had been gone for a couple weeks.  i figured it was the little bit of tomato that was in my lunch but we joked that it was cus i was allergic to him and that when he left it'd go away.  when he left it did go away.  i realized that i enjoyed being alone alot and having him come back was a stressor to me.  needless to say, "we" are no longer.  isn't it weird how sometimes your body knows things your mind doesn't want to admit?

also, before i moved i was breaking out into hives like crazy, stressing about all the stuff i had to get done.

i would wonder too about hormones...your description kinda reminds me of a hot flash.

but i also have a friend, who when she eats, esp when ravenous or hasnt eaten for awhile, will absolutely burn up, she has to strip  ;D .... we think it has to do w/ the blood flow as she is trying to digest.
just a thought.
