What dish says "home" to you?

I've been watching The Hairy Bikers, which is a completely different kind of cooking show. They are indeed hairy, and bikers...and very good cooks as well as hysterical. The last show was about what they call "family classics"--those dishes that while they may not be party fare, are solid home comfort. The kind of dish you hoped your mom would make for dinner the day after a big test.

My mother was nobody's cook, so I took over the cooking at about age 12. And I've made my own food memories since I got married at age 20. In this house, "home" is a big pot of dahl of some description. When it's chickpea I tend to make it with coconut cream instead of milk, for the creamy texture. But dahl is definitely my "heart and hearth" food.

What says "home" to you?

Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, Chicken and Dumplings. Unfortunately since I'm a newbie vegan, I haven't been able to find any good vegan recipes to replace my mom's classic good cooking yet :-[

My personal favorites: noodles with alfredo sauce & broccoli...cooked cabbage with garlic butter... Delicious!

black beans, rice, tachinos, and avocados.

My mom used to make scrambled eggs and put dill and corn in it, so sometimes I make scrambled tofu and put dill and corn in it. It was always like a holiday thing like christmas morning or thanksgiving morning.

My Mum's vegetarian pie.
She now makes it vegan <3 :) So good. That is our special occasion food.

Other than that for everyday home food if I need comfort I make mashed potatoes with steamed veges (carrots, peas etc) and thick savoury gravy. Maybe with vege sausages or some kind of fritter.

Or vege stew. MMMMMMMMMMM!
I want home comfort food now :)

That sounds so YUMMO!! I bet herbed dumplings would be delicious in that. Gonna try that out in the next few days...Hopefully that will replace my mom's chicken & dumplings for a new vegan comfort food  ;)

It does indeed sound fantastic.
I had to laugh at myself, I bought a can of tomato soup and had it for supper last night. First mouthful: delicious! Home food! Second mouthful, my Europeanised tastebuds kicked in and I thought "pasta sauce!"  ;D

I canned my own tomato soup for the first time this fall.  One bite of that and hubby said, never buy tomato soup again! It was so yummy. But at the end of the recipe they wanted you to strain it, I just looked at hubby and said, I ain't gonna throw away all this good fiber. So I just blended it all up in the food processor. Sooooooooo Delicious ;)b

EITHER:
pasta and sauce which my mama calls Gravy, every other kind of gravy is *ingredient*-gravy (meat-gravy, onion-gravy, etc), with garlic bread, salad and a glass of red wine.  :)>>>

My favorite comfort foods would have to be mashed potatoes or mac & cheese. I have to agree; the canned tomatoes with dumplings sounds pretty yummy!

hm. the few things that my mom made regularly don't really feel like "home" to me. I guess it would also be the things that I first cooked - regular old pasta and sauce, scrambled tofu (nothing fancy), and later, refried black beans + fried plantains (THE SWEET ONES, VH).

nothing says 'home' as in where I grew up - my mum never really cooked for me (I started buying and cooking my own food from ~12 years old) and I do not count her house as 'home'.

Home for me are foods that me and N count as comfort / homey foods = spag bol or bangers n mash are my main 'home' foods.

As a veg*n: black bean soup, black beans and yellow rice, faux chick'n fricassee (Cuban style).  I love Cuban food, though I've never quite figured out how it came to be my comfort food.  I certainly didn't grow up with it.
