Updated Bonnaroo Experience Thread
Hey VW, long time no see. ;D
Anyway... Are there any vegwebbers out there who'll be at Bonnaroo this year? Hopefully I'll see You there!
James and I were fortunate enough to snag some spots on the volunteer work crew, meaning We get to attend the festival in exchange for working a couple of 12-15 hour shifts.
I'll be working Thursday night and Saturday morning (helping with parking crew or somesuch), but aside from that, I'll be rocking out to the sights and sounds of GWAR, Ween, The Flaming Lips (performing Dark Side of the Moon -- YES!), Tinariwen, John Fogerty, Tenacious D, Medeski Martin & Wood, and I'm probably going to see Conan O'Brien.
:D
Soooo...
Anyone else?
ALRIGHT EVERYBODY
Anyone who's ever been to Bonnaroo and has any stories, anecdotes, photos, etc. worthy of sharing... GO!

fun, I went to the first two, not in the cards this year though. I just had to comment b/c the Flaming Lips are awesome, and seeing them perform The Dark Side of the Moon would be EPIC!!!! MM&W will be fun too. Sigh, I miss going to festivals and shows, HAVE FUN!!!
Awesome CW! I went in 2006 and 2007. Saw Medeski Martin and Wood there in 06 and Flaming Lips in 07. It was a blast! Have a great time!
I miss seeing you around here. I hope everything is going well with your new home!
I would only be going to see Jay-Z, so it wouldn't be worth it, but rock out for me!
not in the cards for me, but have fun and a drink for me
Bonnnaroo is streaming live on YouTube, if anyone wants to watch.
I didn't know Miranda Lambert was playing!!! It's CMAfest week here in Nashville anyway. I would much rather do that than spend the weekend camping with hippies

au contraire, sb.... only about half of the patrons at B'roo this year could have been identified as "hippies," and most of those were of the faux- or wannabe- variety. The other half was comprised of average-looking older folks, frat-tards and sorority sluts.
There were quite a few country musicians at the 'roo. It's definitely become more of a mainstream-friendly music festival these days.
Also, while Jay Z is definitely not my cup of tea, I heard his show was very well done.

I'm not usually a rap/hip-hop fan but I have been listening to a lot of it lately. Anyhow, Jay-Z always produces some good stuff. You can't deny the power of "99 Problems"

Thanks! I had *almost* more fun than I can handle last weekend... luckily I can handle A LOT. :)
The Flaming Lips performed some of their own tunes for the first half of the set, and that alone would have been a worthy show. Then after a brief intermission, they came back to play Dark Side of the Moon...... and.... gah. The word "Epic" just barely begins to describe what a great show that was.

...this is how Wayne Coyne entered the stage. in a giant bubble. :D

...Their entire show featured crazy, colorful imagery on the big screen behind them. it was definitely designed for an audience tripped out on psychedelics.

Aw, thanks, Lotus. The country life is treating me well, and James and I are great. It's good to hear You and Cams are doing well. :)>>>
James said that MM&W played a good show...
I should have gone, but I decided to be a sillypants and instead went around collecting recyclables and compostable cups off the ground. There was a trading post at Planet 'Roo that gave point vouchers (redeemable for cool prizes n' shit) in exchange for bags of recyclables/compostables. I was trying for a new Sigg bottle, but they ran out by the time I went to redeem my points. So I got a shirt and some sunscreen instead, haha.
The best parts of my trip to Bonnaroo this year are tied between The Flaming Lips show (as seen/described above) and This:

CONAN O'BRIEN introduced Tenacious D!!!!! ...I've loved that man since I was about 9 or 10 years old. :)>>>

JR appears as The Metal!

...and as The Devil!
On the last day, ween played a pretty good show, despite the sweltering heat index of 105 or so. If it wasn't for multiple bottles of water and a few applications of spf 50, I'd have surely died.... because I danced my ass off the whole time...

Haha. That's awesome in a strange way. I actually went to check out MM&W instead of hearing Beck. They were good, but I wish I'd seen Beck. That voucher thing sounds awesome. I don't think they did that when I was there. Flaming Lips shows are definitely designed for psychedelics. Ha.
Glad you and James are well. Cams and I would be doing well-er if he could find a job in SC. ha. But otherwise, yeah.
I didn't know it was on yt. I listened to Dave Rawlings & Gillian Welch through npr, but it was only the audio.
What drugs did y'all eat? I would probably be down with some cocaine or ecstasy during this type of event

Yeah, the trading post voucher deal was new this year. It was great because I saw people like myself--not part of the official "clean vibes" cleanup crew--picking up other lazy-asses' discarded recyclabes and stuff. There were bins all over the place for these things, but the majority of people just threw their shit on the ground. The trading post provided a neat incentive to do a job that most people didn't want to do.
And don't worry, some sort of job will come around for Cams. :)

The live streaming thing was news to me, too. (ahh, technology!) But of course now there's all kinds of good (and not-so good) footage of pretty much everything that went on there.

A friend of Ours brought a big cooler full of psilocybin chocolates, which were apparently very good. Most people in Our staff tent tried some at some point during the week, and I heard nothing but good reports.
Of course they weren't vegan though, so James and I missed out on that.... He also brought some LSD-dipped candy orange slices, which were distributed prior to the Flaming Lips show. I'll just say that those happened to be vegan.
Someone on the parking crew brought a tank of nitrous and a bunch of balloons, but that didn't interest me at all. Short hissing sounds accompanied boistrous laughter and music in the staff tent--all night, every night. ::)
But all in all, the predominant substances were booze and weed. At any given point during the day or night, the entire grounds smelled strongly of sweat, sugar and burning herb.
I would love to have seen The Flaming Lips, The Dead Weather, Mumford and Sons, lots of others, but I don't think I could take the heat.
Did you see Tori Amos or Miranda Lambert?!
