There might already be a post on this but oh well.
What are your top 3 favorite bands and/or songs?
I have so many and I love all types of music, but I'm going to have to say that my top three favorite bands are Le Tigre, The Dresden Dolls, and Metric.
As far as songs go, I love pretty much anything from them, but I like Slideshow At Free University by Le Tigre, Sex Changes by The Dresden Dolls, and Empty by Metric.
For other random favorite songs with different bands I'm going to have to say Waterfalls by TLC, Psycho by Puddle Of Mudd, and Second Chance by Shinedown.
;)
2. Later Days. They're a kind of local Florida band, they live in Cali (state, not vwer) now and are getting big, i love them. I want them to come back and dedicate songs to me (i saw them twice and the first time i got a song cause i had cool tattoos and the 2nd because i forced it on them when they were on stage).
They're getting big now?!
I'm from Florida and I use to love them.
this was maybe 4 years ago, when I was in 8th grade.
You know later days!!?!! Yayy. They moved to cali and toured, and i think they're starting to get big. i was at the new CD release show in naples. I love them :) I knowwww that they're gonna be huge, because they're so freaking awesome! I cant wait for them to come back to florida.
I still have 'Evan's epidemic' on my mp3 player from that long ago, and I still listen to it.
I had no idea they moved. :o
Evans epidemic is the bestt <3 Have you been on their myspace lately? They have really good recordings now. like intensely good. Yeah, i didnt know they did, until they like left after the cd release show and i actually looked at where their myspace says they live and realized they were gone. Go me for not paying attention to things. But mike, the singer, and me agreed to be best friends :) At the last show in like, june, he saw me come in and ran over and was like "best friend hug!" <3 <3 Love them.
HONORABLE MENTIONS (SONGS):
Dust in the Wind ~ Kansas
I love Kansas too...Dust in the Wind and also Carry on my Wayward Son
Eh, limiting myself to three is ludicrously difficult, but here goes (you'll note I added some categories >:D to blunt the blow of the 3 limitation, sorry for the length):
Top 3 bands:
1. Dream Theater - I know few technically obsessed musicians who would not list them
2. Pink Floyd - runners up in the classic rock / progressive vein here would be Zeppelin, King Crimson, Queen, etc, etc
3. Tool - you can probably tell at this point I'm a touch obsessed with music that have heavy introspective grooves
Top 3 Singer/Songwriters:
1. Bob Dylan - my own personal Jesus
2. Paul Simon - I'd add Garfunkel here as well, but Paul did most of the musical end of the work so he gets the credit from me
3. Joan Baez - she's pretty much a gimme when mentioning Dylan
Top 3 songs:
1. Echoes - Pink Floyd - greatest.epic.ever.
2. Things Have Changed - Bob Dylan - could have also gone with My Back Pages, Man in the Long Black Coat, Tangled up in Blue, Abandoned Love...could pretty much go on ad infinitum where Dylan is concerned
3. Weak And Powerless - A Perfect Circle - definitely my favorite track...have a thing for lush, open and vaguely dissonant rhythmic work
Top 3 classical or neoclassical compositions:
1. Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber - overused in movies, but one of my favorite compositions
2. Piano Concerto No. 3 - Sergei Rachmaninoff - continuing my love of technically demanding works
3. Messiah - George Frideric Handel - I can be an atheist and still appreciate the beauty of this piece
Top 3 Concept Albums:
1. The Wall - Pink Floyd - one of those albums everyone knows about because it is just that good
2. Metropolis Pt2 Scenes from a Memory - Dream Theater - most cohesive musical statement, a technical masterpiece
3. The Empire Strikes First - Bad Religion - I suppose it could be argued this is not a concept album, but the unified subject matter and cohesiveness makes it one for me, and one of the best
Top 3 Albums:
1. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd - over-used, sure...I don't care, I've listened to this probably more than any album ever
2. Aenima - Tool - I've interchanged Lateralus and 10,000 Days in this spot two or three times...Aenima got the nod for the combo of Aenima and Third Eye
3. Oh Mercy - Bob Dylan - could have inserted the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan or Time out of Mind here as well
Honorable Mentions:
Akatsuki no Karuma - Fiction Junction / YUUKA - very beautiful, with a potent sadness; since few probably have heard it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYo4XvAyK9k
Duvet - BOA - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0N5YblvT1c

and again, I agree absolutely with this assessment. This would easily be my top three prog bands right there. I can't say how many times I have gotten myself really depressed at the fact that I was born too late to have a real floyd experience : ( Buuuuut having DT to console me tends to make up for that : ) Playing in my town in... 113 days....

Yea, I wish I had caught Gilmour's concert at Gdansk... of course had I even known about it I would have had to get there somehow. Oh well, the DVD makes up for it. Having been too young to have seen Floyd has been a source of lifelong sadness for me too. I'm definitely going to catch Progressive Nation tour this year... actually just saw Tool a couple of weeks ago, would have been a great show had traffic not been backed up for 5 miles (causing us to arrive 30 minutes into the set), if the PA had not completely sucked and I not forgotten some hearing protection.
One note of odd concern relating to that show was the addition of tripping, dancing hippies...that would not have bothered me at Bonnaroo or a Widespread or Phish show, but at Tool? I mean, come on...something's not right here there...
Apologies for diverging from the thread there /rant mode off
2. Metropolis Pt2 Scenes from a Memory - Dream Theater - most cohesive musical statement, a technical masterpiece
I love this album so much. "Open your eyes, Nicholas."
I also love the Bad Religion album, and a good number of the others that you mentioned.
I don't have a favourite band as such, just at the moment. Somehow about 3-4 yrs ago (when my life radically changed) I stopped listening to much music. I must return to it.
Favourite songs I have.
Top joy: "Forever Autumn" by Justin Hayward. It can be found on the War of the Worlds album (Moody Blues)
Hayley Westenra: Bridal Ballad (the song you get for the credits and menus of Al Pacino's "Merchant of Venice" DVD)
Peter Auty: Walking in the Air.
I'm synasthesic. Does it show? :)>>>
And for instrumentals: Jethro Tull, Bourrée (which, btw, means "drunk" in French. Bach had it first, which is interesting. But I like JT better.)
I love this album so much. "Open your eyes, Nicholas."

wooooo even moooore Dream Theater fans? unbelievably awesome. Man, it's a good thing I'm already married, given that a mutual love of DT was pretty much the single catalyst for starting my relationship with my husband... you guys are the best ; )

Hm, this one's a toughie....
3 Bands:
1) Mastodon (their latest album was absolutely fantastic)
2) The Clash
3) it's a tie between Lamb of God and Dream Theater, I can't choose! saw both of them live multiple times and they give wonderful shows, better than anything else I've ever seen.
3 Songs:
1) Santa Monica- Everclear
2) Green Suede Shoes- Black 47
3) 99 Luftballons (the german version)- Nena
I have given much thought to this over many years but my current choices would have to be
Bands:
1. Dream Theater (this never changes, best band on the planet)
2. A toss up between Opeth and Dark Tranquillity
3. Sevendust
Songs

i have their logo tattooed on my arm too. and we got married to stream of consciousness. so very good
I'm more a folk/classical/old jazz kind of person, but I *love* Apocolyptica. My kids got me hooked on them.
My favorite band ever:
Third Eye Blind
People have some excellent taste around here... especially when it comes to punk and metal. (I haven't thought about Shai Hallud in years....)
It would be impossible to narrow it down, so I'm going to do my top 3 bands/songs for right now. This could all change in a half hour.
Bands:
1. CLUTCH (okay, this one may never change...)
2. The Cat Empire
3. Bad Religion
Songs:
1. "Trouble" by Isobel Campbell and Mark LAnegan
2. "(She's In) Traction" - Sweet Baby
3. "Panama" - The Cat Empire
