Southern USA Veg*ns: Are you out there?

I've seen meet-ups in DC, in California, and in New England, I think. What about those of us in the Deep South??
Do I have any fellow veg*ns hiding near me? I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I'd love to get to know anyone within driving distance so we could eventually set up a cool VW thingy like all the other kids! Besides, being veg*n in the South is pretty interesting.
For instance, not eating seafood in Louisiana means you're possessed or something. They don't care if you don't eat chicken and beef.... but you HAVE to like seafood! I get crazier looks for that than I do for refusing pepperoni pizza.
So, where are the southerners? Don't be shy!

I live in florida, which is so far south its not considered southern to most people i know. Hah. But i'm in agriculture, so i often go on trips where theres a hardees and a gas station, and thats it! (and at hardees, a side salad is 2 pieces of lettuce and a bowl of cheese it seems)
Eh. not near louisiana though :-\

We've been trying to set spmething up for a while, but we haven't discussed much recently...
It's true, I don't even know what region Florida is considered to be. I've been there and the culture is quite a bit different from a lot of the South. I guess it's practically Caribbean.
;D
representing GA here!
I'm in Alabama, but hopefully not for long.

Yeah I can just see their faces when you tell them you don't want to suck the brains out of a craw dad. ;D My step Dad is from Biloxi/Gulf Port so he's into all that Cajun cuisine.
Seriously!
I was listening to the radio over the summer and the guy was talking about crawfish boils (which I have never been to, thankfully, since I'm not a native) and saying he liked to hear them scream when you put them in the boiling water!
I changed the channel. I don't even want to know if you really CAN hear it. I so changed the channel.
>:(
My best friend said she watched someone cook a lobster and it screamed, so I guess crawfish screams wouldn't be too far fetched. When my brother and I found out that lobsters get boiled alive when we were 8 or 9, we decided to open a lobster sanctuary when we grew up. (We didn't).
Hi, I don't know why I'm on this thread. I'm from the southern hemisphere (and previously from the southwest)...does that count?
Living in Miami right now and I also consider Key West to be home...doesn't get more south than that!
I pretty much live in Atlanta. It's Georgia; there are rednecks; I live in the south.
I'm from TX, so I was out there, but I'm UP here, now. :P
representing Nashville!
Hey. Lubi! That's about halfway between where I'm from and where I'm at! (horrible grammar, but it sounded good)
My brother and I stopped in TN overnight that one time I packed up everything I owned in my car and drove to another part of the country. We had pancakes for breakfast.
Maybe I have done that a couple of times, but who cares?
maybe sometime soon all of us southerners can meet somewhere in the middle!
My husband is from Slidell, LA and used to be a Baton Rouge vegan! I know he hung out with a student group at LSU called SEAC (Student Environmental Action Coalition), which included a few other vegans, and through that group he met other like-minded people. I went to a free environmental conference there in 2001, which was free because SEAC wrote all these companies about how they wanted to have an all-vegan conference, and they got all the food donated! If I were to look for vegans in Baton Rouge, I'd start with SEAC, if they still exist.
Baton Rouge has (or at least had c.2002) some awesome ethnic food! Have you been to Atcha? India's? Rama's? Nathan used to eat at Atcha *every* day, and it ruined him for all other, lesser falafel, probably for life. :P He also liked this store called (I think) Living Foods...?
There's a VW meetup in Austin on March 14th, but I know all too well that's 8 hours drive time from you. :-\
maybe sometime soon all of us southerners can meet somewhere in the middle!
It was seven hundred fenceposts from your place to ours
Neither one of us was old enough to drive a car
Sometimes it was raining, sometimes it would shine
We wore out that gravel road between your house and mine
I'd start walking your way
You'd start walking mine
We'd meet in the middle
'neath that old georgia pine
We'd gain a lot of ground
cause we'd both give a little
And their ain't no road to long
When you meet in the middle
Its been seven years tomorrow since we said our vows
Under that old pine tree, you ought to see it now
Standing in the back yard reminding me and you
That if we dont see eye to eye there's something we can do
I'd start walking your way
You'd start walking mine
We'd meet in the middle
'neath that old georgia pine
We'd gain a lot of ground
cause we'd both give a little
And their ain't no road to long
When you meet in the middle
Babe I love the way we work it out
Thats what love's about
I'd start walking your way
You'd start walking mine
We'd meet in the middle
'neath that old georgia pine
We'd gain a lot of ground
cause we'd both give a little
And their ain't no road to long
When you meet in the middle
I'd start walking your way
You'd start walking mine
We'd meet in the middle
'neath that old georgia pine
We'd gain a lot of ground
cause we'd both give a little

NC Southerner....although Asheville doesn't really feel like the south!
I also used to live in FL....I guess I am a northerner placed in the south ( I grew up in Ohio).
maybe TN would be in the middle?
I met a veg girl who moved here from Louisiana. She was vegan except she said she ate fish while in LA because everyone does! :>
I'm from TX, so I was out there, but I'm UP here, now. :P

And ftr, I'm just joking with you, AC. ;)
Wow, thanks for the info, Lauuren! I'm a student at LSU and have been timidly wondering where I'd find other vegetarians. :)
I eat a lot at Casa Maria and Izzo's, and there's a really good Chinese place near LSU that has a handful of veggie/tofu dishes. I'll have to check out those falafels, because I LOVE falafels!
I doubt I will be going to Austin in March. It's a little soon, and we're still trying to find J a real job. Tennessee is a more likely prospect in the future.... I will keep it in mind!
Do you guys find it more frustrating to be veg*n in the South, or about the same? I know if I still lived in WV/MD I could take a little trip with MDVegan once a month for all sorts of groceries, but here there aren't manyoptions for shopping. And there are very few veg*ns (well, ones that don't eat seafood). I like living in the city because at least I have some restaurant choices. :)
I love Nashville, but it isn't vegan friendly. There are no vegan restaurants. 1 indian vegetarian restaurant and a few others with lots of vegetarian options. We do have whole foods and trader joe's though.
