I get my wisdom teeth out August 13! I've never been "put under" before!!!

The nice thing is they've been pulling wisdom teeth since medical billing began, so they're all sorts of experienced. I think it's natural to be a little nervous. When I had my wisdom teeth out, it was smooth sailing.

get ready to eat a ton of smoothies and soymilk shakes... when i had mine out when i was younger all i wanted was chocolate milkshakes. unfortunately, about half of it ended up running down my chin and landing on my shirt without me even noticing. my family got quite a laugh out of it though.

I got four permanent molars taken out (with literally the rub on with a q-tip anaesthetic) because my orthodontist was a total sadistic weirdo. That hurt incredibly.
I didn't realize why I hated the dental visits, until I left this dentist. I used to have my teeth shaven with an electric razor without pain killers every visit. Now I have receded gums in areas, and no enamel in others. And to think, this is a person who had like 8 dental/medical degrees and won awards in cosmetic surgery lol.
And I would think that you should at least local anaesthetize it with maybe the whole 'shot in the gums' thing rather than put you under. I'll be begging for that when mine need to come out.. soon :(

I had two of my wisdom teeth out without being put under and I really wished I had! It was the most awful thing (medically) that I have ever been through! Don't be scared, it will be a nice nap!

I had 2 done w/ novocaine and 2 done while under.
I can't say either one was worse than the other...they both got the job done. ;D
Good luck, you'll be just fine!!

i feel for you beanthai, ive been there: my old dentist used to smell like old coffee and wore butterfly collared polyester shirts (this was the 90s -hello?) and would literally preach to me about how good andhealthy hot dogs were to eat. yeah, hell!!! :-\ :-\ :-\
i had my wisdom teeth out w/ just gas and it was fairly painless. though they got infected for months later and they used clove oil in the sockets. so it was the best diet ever...everything tasted like cloves. :P

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out. They were impacted, all underneath the gum line. They put me under. And, honestly, (maybe I'm weird) but it was such a fun experience. I went to sleep. Woke up, and was loopy on pain meds for the next 3 days. No swelling, no bruising, etc. I had a great time. Everything was funny on my pain meds. Watching TV was hilarious.
It's nothing to worry about. I was under for a little less than an hour. And it felt like, literally, one second. When they woke me up, I thought they hadn't yet started! After wards, I just kept my head elevated and put ice all around my cheeks. So, I had no brusing or swelling. Also, I made sure to take REALLY good care of the areas afterwards. You don't want an infection or dry socket. Just be VERY responsible about flushing out all the food which may accumulate there after EVERY meal. Even if you just eat one chip - flush it out. Don't suck through a straw for a while. Even if you get a smoothie - use a spoon.
The aftercare is key, IMO. All my friends who had bad experiences didn't take care of theirs properly. I had a great experience because I was very responsible about taking care of my stitches.
So, as long as you do that ... you can have a fun, loopy time on pain meds. :D

Before they put you out, tell them you'd like to keep your wisdom teeth. I still have mine. They're fun to look at!

I was knocked-out for my wisdom teeth removal. It sucked, but I lived. Bring a spit bucket with you for post op, you won't be able to swollow for a bit. Lots of soy ice cream. Lots of smoothies. Lots of mashed potatoes. Lots of Videos. Take the pain meds. You'll do fine!

I had all 4 out at once. They knocked me out. I would have thrown a fit if they wouldn't have offered. Like Ecstatic said, they wake you up, and you really don't think they have even started yet! You'll be fine.
Years later, I had to have a procedure done, and I was asked if I wanted general or local anesthesia. I went for general. No boredom, no nervousness, no awareness of pressure.

Haha! Ecstatic, I thought I was the only one! I wasn't too keen about going under, but seriously, it was fun. Unlike you, I did have pretty severe swelling and pain, but the meds were great (I hate taking medicine, but sometimes you have to and it might as well be fun, eh?)
The only problem...I was 18 and just returned from my graduation trip to the beach with my friends the previous day. Apparently, after I came out of the anesthesia I was telling my dad ALL ABOUT my trip. He still want tell me exactly what he knows though... ;)

I am getting mine out August 9th - all four, completely impacted. I am hoping to use it as an excuse to eat WAY too much soy ice cream! Good luck!

Man, if I could have the surgery for you guys - I would! Those pain killers were better than mushrooms and pot in Amsterdam. Seriously. I had such a good time. There's really nothing to worry about.
Oh, and I have a PO Box in case anyone gets extra pain killers.
