Rookie Mistake

okay okay.... so I know I'm supposed to read EVERY fricking label but i didn't.  I was looking at Terra chips, and I read a couple of the labels, and they were both vegan, so I bought the Mediterranean flavor.  I really thought I had read the label... I obviously didn't because as I am snacking away I see the words "CONTAINS MILK"...they have whey in them  :'(  They SHOULDN'T contain milk, i see no reason.  the label says "garlic, oregan, olive oil with a hint of lemon"....sounded vegan to me!

This was a pretty big splurge for us since we never buy chips and these were close to $4.....

What do I do with them now? Should we eat em and just never get the flavor again? I feel that throwing them out would be wasteful..... Blech. I feel like a bad vegan.  :(

If you didn't already open them, take them back, say you got the wrong kind, and exchange them for the vegan ones.

yeah you should always read the labels. Ony takes a minute and saves a lot of trouble. Milk is in so many things where you would never expect it. I can't tell you what to do with the chips, that's up to you.

Don't feel bad at all!  I used to get these cookies from WF that I swore were vegan, but it turns out they weren't.  The other day I accidentally bought the Trader Joe's mini wheats, and I swear the label didn't have gelatin.  It did.  Oh well!  I ate the cereal anyway--wasting it isn't going to save anyone.

I'd known both the chocolate and vanilla/cinnamon Cats Cookies at TJs were vegan, and then they came out with the ginger type. I bought them without (thoroughly?) checking the ingredients, and later found out they had egg. I gave them to my brother, who willingly accepted.

Can you "share" them with someone?  I accidently bought a cheese and ham (barf) scone the other day, thinking it was just a cheese scone.  I gave it to my mom.

Don't.

Eat them if you want to, share them with others if you don't, and next time you'll know to be more careful with labels. That's about it, really.

yeah, i would say definitely don't just throw them away.  i hate that they put milk in things that shouldn't need it, like chips esp. (and ramen flavoring).  but, enjoy them and don't feel guilty about it, or pawn them off on someone else.  maybe, just maybe, you could get someone else to buy a vegan bag and trade.

i got a bag of flavored chips, same thing, all of the othr flavors that i had before were vegan, so i picked this jalapeno one up.  they were soooo good.  i LOVED them.  i found out they were vegan halfway into the bag and realizing i would never eat them again i savored evey last chip.  dang those chips were so good.  ohwell.

I was looking at Terra chips... the label says "garlic, oregan, olive oil with a hint of lemon"...

disclaimer:  this doesn't address your issue at all

I interpreted Terra chips as chocolate chips.  When I got to the list of ingredients, garlic, oregano, olive oil, lemon, I didn't catch it.  Being exposed to so many types of foods and flavors, I thought:  hmm, I wonder in what dishes I could use that type of chocolate?

when I first went vegan, I went through a whole bage of Quorn brand "chicken breast" before I read the ingredients.  Man, they were good.

I just went through an entire half a bag of Cape Cod Black pepper and sea salt chips that I loved...then saw milk...was very sad, but finished eating them and will not buy them again. It happens. Don't feel bad.
