Positive people sick of negative people leaving mean, pointless reviews/comments

Is anyone else sick and tired of negative people leaving nasty, rude pointless reviews and comments all the time?  I have been using VegWeb for a long time, around 3 years, but only became a member a little while ago, and I have noticed over time that the same mean people keep leaving opinions and comments that no one wants to hear.

It is one thing to leave a bad review for a recipe - when a recipe doesn't work for you, its a great idea to let people know why it didn't work for you and the changes that you made to the recipe for it not to work, that way they won't make the same mistakes.  It is totally possible to leave an honest but polite 'bad' review that doesn't hurt the feelings of the person that posted the recipe, or turn anyone else off making the recipe.

However, it is another thing to come along and leave reviews that are mean and hurtful, especially when they have nothing to do with the recipe itself and are just a personal attack on the people who write or review the recipes.

It is always the same few people who do this, today has been a particularly bad day for these types of reviews and that's what prompted me to post this discussion.

The most common negative messages that I have seen are some particular 'holier than thou' VegWebbers who go into recipes that they never intend on cooking, usually for cakes, desserts, etc, and leave reviews that the recipe is just crap because it has sugar, flour, oil, etc in it and that it's just junk food and that THEY wouldn't eat it because THEY are so pure and fabulous and only eat pure fabulous things.  I don't understand why they review recipes that they will never cook anyway just so they can share their negativity and spiteful comments.  The hardest thing about being a vegan sometimes is trying to find yummy alternatives for things we used to love, so when someone comes up with a great recipe for some naughty pie or cake or cookie, it is an absolute Godsend!  When someone comes along and chastises everyone for eating 'junk food', frankly it just makes us all feel like crap!  Why should we feel bad for eating something 'naughty' every now and then?  As long as we eat properly most of the time, then we are all entitled to treats!  I say, BRING ON THE CHOCOLATE CAKE!  :D

The reason we are all members of VegWeb is because we are part of a minority group in society who have decided to stop eating animals and animal by-products for the welfare of animals and for our health and wellbeing.  Being a vegan or vegetarian is hard work because people who don't choose this lifestyle have trouble understanding why we choose to go down this path.  It takes a lot of patience to continually explain to people why you don't eat meat or animal products without being 'preachy'.  That's why we all need to stick together.  Whether you're vegetarian, vegan, a raw foodist, fruitarian, WHATEVER, we need to support each other and respect each other's ideas and opinions without getting rude and nasty if your opinion differs.

Now that I've got all the negatives out, I can focus on the positives.  There are some awesome VegWebbers who always stick up for other people who have had their recipes and reviews attacked.  Thank you for having the courage to stand up to these bullies!  There are people on here who's posts and reviews I absolutely love to read, who contribute so much to the site in the form of recipes, posts, photos, ideas........I truly value and appreciate your contributions to VegWeb, and love trying your recipes, reading your reviews and looking at your fab photos, there are so many inspiring people on here who make being vegan just that little bit easier!!  ;)b

PHEW!!!  Feels good to get that all out in the open.

HAVE A FABULOUS DAY!!!  :-*

hey jasmina....I totally agree with you.  I had just logged on today and noticed quite a few poor reviews.  I'm probably a bit of a saddo, but it really angers me when this sort of thing happens.
I have used the 'report to admin' button before now with no negative retributions - and Yvette has always thanked me for bringing such posts to her attention.

Thanks for that Shelloid, that's a big help.  Tonight after I finish work (its only 6am right now in australia), I'm gonna get on here and send me some reports!!!!  Even though it seems like Alliychristine might have beat me to it maybe  ;)  you guys are awesome!!!!

Catski, your microwave brownie recipe is the first all vegan recipe i ever tried all that time ago and i still make it to this day, it is AWESOME.  when i got the recipe and saw that someone had written about microwaving killing the nutrients, i was like, WOW, there are nutrients in brownies???  I mean, i know i'm blonde, but come on - nutrients in brownies???  (Although these ones do have a banana in them, that's pretty nutritious   ;D )

THHF, thank you so much for letting me know what that 'namaste' thing was, i've heard it said before but never knew what it meant.  i hate when people like that use words like that just to make them sound all cool, like, 'oh, look at me, i'm saying 'Namaste', therefore i'm just this awesome serene buddhist hippie pagan' or something.  Puh-lease.  It doesn't make them any of those things.  Blech.

Carrot_Wench (i heart your name!), i so had to laugh at what you wrote about people with their bad reviews, for example:

"this recipe freakin sucked.  i substituted flour for salt, sugar for cocoa, flax for boogers and chocolate for one of my cat's turds.  it turned out terribly."

Hmmm...i wonder if it was the salt that ruined the recipe...or it could have been the cat turd...??    :-D

You guys rock so much!!!  Thank you all for following this thread.  I'm off to work now.  Have an awesome day!!!!   :-*

This whole thread is over one person...?

Send a PM to staff..

Hey Andrew!!  I just saw your message before i shut my computer down so thought i'd quickly write back.  I didn't start this topic about one person cos I have noticed some negativity and nastiness on here for a long time now, but yesterday i just saw all these horrible posts from the one person that really just set me off and encouraged me to write this thread.  There are so many people on here that are a bit P-O'd about this particular person's reviews and comments and at least this is a place where we can boycott people leaving messages like that.  I'm hoping if we all get on and report the bad comments, the person will get removed.  or in the least, get a warning.

Thanks for taking an interest Andrew, i appreciate it  ;)b  have a great day!!!  :>

Ok, so I know I'm a little behind here, but I just read that girls' comments and I don't think she's for real.  It seems like she's trying way too hard, like its an act, for entertainment purposes....I know its possible for someone to have absolutely no regard for another persons' feelings and to be a complete ass, but I think its just for shits n' giggles....it just seems fake to me.....

i totally get what you're saying Erin, i was thinking along the same lines also but not so much that they are 'faking it', i thought perhaps she had a 'condition' i guess you could say...like a serious mental affliction that causes her to go attention-seeking in all the wrong ways...could even be a result of low self esteem...but you're right, it does seem like the comments are just ridiculous, and are definitely all said out of spite, but like i said, i really do wonder if that person has some sort of medical condition or something...?

Yeah I can't believe that anyone is that much of a knob... but on the other hand if you created that persona for entertainment you would pretty much be as much of an idiot as if you were just magically like that.

I feel like a dick all the sudden.  I posted this tonight:

I followed the recipe exactly, but the batter was SUPER dry and crumbly.  I had to mash them together to form them, and when I baked them, they came out looking raw, they never got  golden brown.  They were pretty good, taste wise, but I will continue the search for a great vegan chocolate chip cookie.  Sorry to be  negative.    :-\

about the Happy vegan chocolate chip cookies.  How timely.  I suck.

Sorry you guys.  I guess I'm part of the problem!

kfk: your review seems fine to me, and you're totally not a jerk. it's the people who just say mean things out of nowhere/without making the recipe, or who attack other people that are the weewees. personally, i like knowing if a recipe doesn't turn out for someone, that way, if it happens to me, i know it's not entirely me (:

Yeah, that was a good example of constructive criticism of a recipe. :)

definitely kfk - that was a helpful honest review. an example of a bad one for that recipe would be one that just tells people that they should go make the raw cookie recipe (from a person who is continually demonizing those of us who choose to bake with flour & sugar).

theres nothing wrong with giving a bad review if you actually made the recipe, or if you made changes that didnt turn out and let everyone else know so we don't make the same mistake.

Hee hee...ponycakes said "weewees."  ;D I know what you mean, but I'm gonna use that. It also kills me that the person in question waited "a couple of years" to pan the cookies and cream recipe? Obviously not a happy person, Particularly if the persona is invention. Why would you need to invent such an unpleasant person?

Did anyone mention that the quote under her picture is "Play my game and I'll put you to shame"....something a bit off there.

Yeah, I just noticed that. Definitely needs to get some help. Or a life, one.

Oh KFK, you're so not a dick!!!  You gave a 'bad' review without being at all mean, and you even mentioned how yummy they taste, it was just the texture that wasnt right.  Don't be silly, you're not part of the problem at all  :>

Absolutely not.  IMO, bad reviews are even more important than good ones and if people feel inhibited about making them then this site becomes a waste of time.  There are thousands of recipes on vegweb and many of them are unreviewed.  Some of them are great, many are mediocre and there's more than just one or two that are not good at all.  If you make something that turns out yucky or not great and you don't review the recipe, then all the next person has to go with is either nothing or some good reviews.  I think people don't like to leave negative reviews in general, and it can lead to a particular recipe being --literally--overrated.  There are a couple of people who use these boards who expect a lot from recipes and are quite critical and I value their opinions highly.
