The official, amazing, aimless chitchat thread.
So this is where we go to make small talk that doesn't really fit into other threads.
It's the thread with no attention span!
Frequent, arbitrary changes of topic are encouraged. In fact, they are mandatory.
So, I was just thinking, wouldn't it be awesome to have the decor in each room of your house be inspired by a food? Like, I was cutting up eggplant today, making my accidental eggplant chips, and I though, wow, this eggplant looks so pretty against this green plate! I would love to have a room inspired entirely by eggplant colors. And then I thought there could be ones inspired by mangoes and apples and sweet potatoes and pretty much any other pretty food.
Hey, a friend of mine made these really awesome mosaics of all her food pictures based on color. THIS is what I mean:

So, what was I saying?
Yeah, where I am now is on the edge of LA county, and is not a great area. One bedrooms go for about 800-1100, and I totally scored with my last apartment have have a 2-bedroom for 850.
For the area I'm moving to, I could have gotten an apartment for 1200, but there was always something with those, whether it was literally next to the freeway (I don't care about noise, but both my mom and sister live near the freeway, and there's always soot from it. gross. probably not good to breathe either...), infested with roaches, a door that does not cover the entire doorway (for real! this happened!), or a teeny living room. Sigh.
However, awesome features of my overpriced new apartment:
has a larger kitchen than i have now, with a built-in spice rack (YEAH)
an actual dishwasher
an un-shared water heater
comes with a fridge
wood floors
garden/patio thing out front with giant awesome tree
non-crappy neighborhood
yes, i am impressed by normal features.
FB, the limed-up shower head is easy to fix on your own, though yeah, you shouldn't have to. But in case they don't put it very high on their list of priorities you can put warmed white vinegar in a plastic bag, put it over the shower head making sure it's submerged, fasten it on with twist ties or rubber bands or whatever and leave it for 3-4 hrs and that should do it. I don't know if warming the vinegar makes a difference but the person I saw using this on TV warmed the vinegar.
... could i just unscrew the whole shower head and put that in a bowl of vinegar?
I bet you could...I thought of that after I posted.
There are normal apartments that don't come with fridges? Isn't that one of the only/main perks of apartment life...comes with appliances?
All of my northern and central California apartments came with fridges, but when I moved to SoCal and went hunting, you had to supply your own fridge for all of the units I looked at.
Here in Spain only "furnished apartments" come with appliances. Empty rentals come empty. Fridge, washer--you want it you provide it.
Damn, my old apartment was 2100 for a 2 bed+loft/2 bath, thought it did come with washers, fridge, dishwasher. (Those aren't perks for us though because my mom bought our own fancy appliances back when we lived in apartments that didn't come with them, so now we usually have 2 fridges and 2 washers/driers wherever we go -__-). Our current place is more like a townhouse with 2 br/2.5 bath+office/craft room, wood floors downstairs, big kitchen, complete with appliances... and only runs for $200 more. Though it is right off the freeway, it's not noisy at all and is in a very nice area... I haven't noticed any soot. Plus, we have community things like a gym, movie room, computer office, which is nice.
yeah, I've definitely never lived anywhere that came with any appliances , though I have never lived in an apartment, so that might be the difference.
also, fb, at a rotten flat back in the day, there was in inspection report with a comment 'WHY IS THERE A TORTOISE?!', and also they *may* have noticed the kittens who were temporarily hanging out in a broken couch in an empty room.... Turns out those animals weren't as sneaky as they should have been!

It depends. I've seen units that come with a fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer, and dryer, and others that come with none of that!
I always thought a stove was, like, totally standard, but I saw some listings for apartments with no stove. There's no way I'd do that, because I mean... you'd have to buy a stove, and then when you move most likely the next place will have one. And unlike fridges, stoves are less common on craigslist so I expect they're harder to sell.
SOG, my mom and sister are both by the 10/405 thing, so maybe it's just there. But I didn't really want to move next to the 101 in case it was the same gross soot thing.
Yeah, I guess I thought all appliances (other than washer and dryer) were givens for an apartment. Strange. Although our last apartment had that stupid, tiny fridge..

wait, so what appliances other than a fridge and oven would you expect to have in an apartment?

......fridge and oven? and hopefully dishwasher. never washer and dryer! but hopefully adequate laundry rooms.
All the apartments I've lived in have came with a fridge, stove and dishwasher. I always look for washer/dryer hookups in the apartment so I can rent them instead of having to buy. Using the "public" laundry area is not something I'd ever do again. I had to use it with my first apartment and I always ended up with clothes that weren't my own because people would toss their crap in with my own. Yuck!

oh ok, I got confused for a sec there when you said "all appliances" and thought maybe you all lived in a crazy world with free microwaves/toasters/I don't know what else provided when you rent a place! haha.
Here I would say it's more common to have a washing machine included than a fridge... but still not expected.
aimless: (Cost Plus) World Market's Sweet & Spicy Tortilla chips w/ Flaxseed are delicious and, when sprinkled with a bit of nooch, remind me of a way better version of Doritos.
In the unfurnished places I rented in the UK it was standard to have a fridge and cooker and washing machine.
Actually I only ever rented one unfurnished place so I may be totally off what is the norm.
I was a bit shocked to discover that unfurnished here only included the cooker. Luckily the house we bought had a built in cooker so we didn't have to buy one when we moved.
AND IT HAS A DISHWASHER!!! Sorry it's quite exciting as I've never had a dishwasher before.
most places have a laundry room, though some had laundry hook-ups and no machines. one place actually had a washer/dryer with the unit, but it was waaayyy expensive.
some places came with a microwave, only because it was one of those ones that's apart of the cabinets.
this place has a dishwasher, but it's a smaller one. i think i'll actually like that better (provided it works...) because i had the larger type before, and with only two people, it was either like we had to get all our dishes dirty to run it, or be wasteful and run it 1/3 full :/
All the apartments I've lived in or looked at came with the big appliances (fridge, washer/dryer, oven/stove, and sometimes dishwasher). Actually, at one place they had some apartments without a washer/dryer, and some with, which were like $25 more per month. I've only actually lived in 2 apartments, but looked at more, and seen friends' apartments. All of these were in AZ.
In Australia, or at least in the area where I live, apartment complexes are much less common so most people rent a house, or a room in a house. The places we rented only came with the stove/oven and we had to buy the other appliances. But in cases where you rent a room in a house, the landlord might provide the fridge/washer/etc, since most of the time the tenants would be poor college students.
I want a dishwasher.
Q: Why should you get your gf a white dress?
A: So your refrigerator will match your dishwasher.
^ My favorite irredeemable sexist joke, because it's so over the line (and because I only wash my own dishes).
-> I don't have a dishwasher. I'd like one so I could use it to sterilize canning jars.
-> I don't have washer/dryer hookups, or a place to install them without adding on to my house. I'd take not going to the laundromat over the dishwasher. I always thought if I became a homeowner I'd have a lot of things I don't have.
