Memory

Does anybody have any experience with certain whole foods giving them a memory boost?  I can't tell you how many times I've opened the closet instead of the fridge lately, or went to an area and just stared blankly, waiting for the reason I was there to surface...
:-\

?

I think it's the vitamin E and/or omega 3s that supposedly makes fish "brain food"...so maybe look for veg foods with those things (flax?  avocados?  I don't know).  But also, have you been getting enough sleep?  I do a lot of staring blankly when I'm tired.

Ginko biloba has really helped me. I get it from the pharmacy in a tincture and take a certain amount each day. (When I remember to,  :-D) They also sell it in teas etc. It took a couple of days to "kick in" but I remember feeling very relaxed by it, not in a sedated sense but muscles etc seemed to de-tense. It helps circulation to the brain, too.

I would definitely have your B12 level checked.  That is one of the first things they check when suspecting Alzheimer's.  Lack of it can mimic some of the same symptoms.

Getting enough sleep and eating foods rich in E and omegas as someone else suggested.

Probably most of us have gone upstairs, only to come downstairs without whatever we went upstairs for.  Or gone in to the kitchen and stared blankly at the cupboard or fridge.

Stress can also be a factor.  In our fast paced lives, we tend to have too much on our minds, therefore forgetting some of the most basic things.

Relaxation exercises, yoga etc., might also help.

Being a subject close to my heart, I tend to be overly sensitive when I hear  'memory jokes'.  I also worry when I forget something or can't spit out a sentence.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!  I eat ground flax, avocados and plenty of nuts frequently, so I think I'm covered on the omega 3s.  My B12 should be fine- I drink fortified soymilk every day and take a multivitamin supplement about once a week.

Now the sleep thing could be a factor.  I get up at 5:00 AM during the week because it's the only time I can find to get some exercise in.

Yabbit, I will try your Ginko suggestion!

I eat foods with B12.  I don't absorb B12 and need monthly shots.  Next time you get your blood checked, ask them to check your B12.  I know a huge meat eater that also doesn't absorb B12.  Don't rule a deficiency out.

I don't absorb B12 from fortified foods or vitamins.

Interesting...I'll keep that in mind.  Thanks!
