I'm finally getting around to cooking a big old pot of Delicious Pakistani Dahl with my own tweeks. I love all lentils, but red have to be my favourite because I adore a plate of red lentil dahl (dhal? Which is it?) over rice. I add spinach, canned tomatoes and a touch of coconut cream.
What about you?
mmmm, I love them all!
...but if I HAD to choose just one, it'd be the split red variety, because I too love a nice hearty dal. dahl. dhalwhateverit'stasty.
Red is my favorite.
I've never had brown lentils - I think the standard must be green, right? even though they sometimes look kinda brown....
Red are amazing in certain things, but I like the texture of the larger lentils....and I kinda like how they sometimes taste like dirt when they're plain....
At least here, EM, brown lentils are small and round and very brown. Green lentils are bigger, flatter and Army green.
If they taste like dirt, wash em! ;)b
OMG I loooove dahl! I have had a really had time cooking it though--I can never get it creamy! I'm a big fan of brown--but I really like yellow too...and red...and green...okay--I just LOVE lentils! *lol*

I do wash them! I just think the lentils themselves taste like dirt - not in a bad way though....
and I guess no one around here sells brown lentils....

I wonder if your brown lentils are what I would call French lentils. To me brown and green would be the same (cuz they're kinda greenish brown).
All is explained here: http://www.foodsubs.com/Lentils.html
there's also black lentils.
for dahl/dhal/daal/dal, i like split mung beans best. pretty sure they don't count as a lentil though.
green lents.
I love red and brown lentils, but I don't think I've ever seen green ones. I will have to look.
red all the way! I have some black lentils but don't know what to do with them!
Apparently our brown lentils are musoor. The "French" lentils look wrinkly and horrid on that link.
The "most common" one to them is our regular lentil. Love the way they call it a "brown" lentil and then a "green" one.
When I came here thirty years ago you always presoaked your lentils and cooked them in the pressure pan. Then suddenly about ten yrs ago if you did that they cooked to mush. Now I never presoak or pressure cook them...just boil them on the stove and they're done in about 20 min.
i thought red lentils were masoor. according to the page veggydog posted, masoor are "pink" lentils, and red lentils are labeled something different. whatevs.
Bring them on...any kind. My favorite probably is green or brown. I'm not sure which I have swince they look a greenish brown in color.
Red, or masoor, (my bag is from the Indian store and says masoor) are too delicate and turn to mush, not that that's bad, I just like the texture of a whole bean better.
I also have a package of toor dal, which to me looks like yellow lentils, but not sure if they are a true "lentil".
Here in my Asian market they try to sell you split soybeans as "toor dahl." Soybeans ain't lentils. Grrr.
I've never had any but the green. : (
red all the way! I have some black lentils but don't know what to do with them!
13 bean soup!!! They're also great in vegan chili, bean loaf and of course curry!
:)>>> lentils of all kinds, but red is my fave. Is it weird that I like leftover dal spread on whole grain toast?

i believe toor dal = pigeon peas (one mature, one fresher)
Whole Masoor lentils are brown. Split (and hulled) are red. But, they come from the same lentil plant.
I like them all! And at our Indian Grocery they have all kinds (I understand there are about 20 varieties!)
My favorite are Black Beluga Lentils. They are small round and hold their shape well. I love them!
All others are yummy too tho!
