Hair washing
Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!
I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.
P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.
Yea I start with just a little on my fingertips and build up until it feels sort of "clean". It does come off under my fingernails when I scratch my head afterward though. I have only used arrowroot powder so far, it works fine for me, haven't tried any other starches yet.
do you guys get that residue under your finger nails anyway without using the starch powder? that's one of the things i hated about not washing my hair.
I wash my hair and still get that. I've been trying to get rid of the build up but it never goes away.
I've still not tried the cornflour/arrowroot/potato starch thing...
A good friend of mine is coming home from America to get married between Christmas and new year.
my mum just called me at work to tell me that she's booked me a haircut on the day of the wedding as a Christmas present.
I'm scared, because I wasn't planning on getting my hair cut till before my brother's wedding in February and now I'm really anxious about how to get around them wanting to shampoo my hair.... : /
can you just ask them not to? like go with your hair already wet?
I think you can just ask them to only rinse your hair.
yeah I guess but it will still seem odd as I have always had them wash my hair before, even if I've already washed it that day and it's still wet when I go in.
Hmmm yea that's a tricky one. I guess make sure it's recently WO washed so it feels clean and ask for just a rinse. Or go to Just Cuts where they never wash your hair :D
Where I go the stylists won't cut your hair if they can't wash it too. They want to make sure you have nothing funky going on in your hair.
what sort of place will you be going to? Some of the places I've tried to go to in the past have refused to use my own shampoo conditioner, so I didn't go there as their stuff prob wasn't vegan.
Most places have been cool using my own shampoo or just wetting my hair.
I finally got my hair cut last week for the first time since moving to NZ. She actually charged more for shampooing my hair, but was happy to use my shampoo / conditioner.
Hairdressers here tell women that if you dry cut hair, you damage it. This I suppose justifies their prices "because it includes the wash and conditioner and products." Funny, because barbers never wash men's hair unless they ask. Some barber shops don't even have a sink.
That's the same here too, Yabbit.
I've never had some one want to wash my hair before cutting?
Usually they just use a spray bottle to get it wet.
returning late to this conversation, I only get my hair cut approx once a year or less, and I go to the guy who cuts my mum's hair so I was kinda worried if he thinks my hair looks manky/can tell it hasn't been shampooed he might mention it next time she's in.
But, I think it looks/feels ok, so what should it matter what I've been washing it with? right?
recent pic to show the condition of my hair ... I'm still pretty happy

It looks great, oww!
Yepp, doesn't look bad at all. It looks nice and soft!
you are just so super cute, oww. :sheep:
haha thanks guys. though, I don't know about super cute, AC!
I'm liking that it isn't quite so flat as it was for a while there. Still definitely happier with my hair the day after washing, but that was always the case with shampoo/conditioner too, so no biggie.
I think your hair looks nice.
yeah it looks super awesome, oww!
