Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

on the dandruff thing, I've definitely got a drier scalp now than I used to, but I don't think it's dandruff.  I also have been using a comb and hadn't used one prior to this for about 20 years, and I find it sometimes pushes a few dry bits through my hair which looks pretty bad, but I just always make sure to work all the dry scalp bits out while I'm combing it.

Shell, I'm so sorry you're not happy with your hair!  But I love how stubborn you are about it anyway!  Damn you, hair, I'm not gonna wash you no matter how much you want me to!!

And this is how my hair looked last night, not the best photo, but it's probably a fairly accurate idea of how it is at the mo.

Hahhaha ahhhh Shell your rendition of our hair conversation is AWESOME! I'm sorry you're not feeling happy with it yet, but like oww says, I certainly admire your stubbornness!

Oww your hair looks nice :)

I think I might vinegar rinse my brushes today and give my hair a good brush. And possibly baking soda out as much pink as I can...

This is how it's looking this morning:

Filthy regrowth! My hair has really gotten darker with this no shampoo thing!

so i am finally totally over the moon happy with my hair......because I finally backed down and washed it with shampoo and conditioner!!!  Yay!!!  it is so nice and soft and I can't stop touching it!

I'm so pleased I decided to shampoo again.  My hair is the one part of me that I am normally really proud and happy with, but when I was WO washing I wasn't happy with it.  Now I am again!

And I managed to get super cheap vegan no animal testing shampoo & conditioner yesterday that smells of yum!  They were only NZD2.70 each for 750ml - how cheap!!

Oh, yeah and my super non-noticing-anything boyfriend noticed within about 2 seconds of seeing me after I had washed it! (I washed it after the gym and then met up with him about 40mins later) - ha!

I haves teh brown hairs. For the dancing job I'm doing for the TV thing I need natural looking hair so I took the plunge and tried to pick a dye close to the colour my hair now seems to be and went over the pink/bleached sections with it.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y292/theodamus/browncrop.jpg

It's crazy! I never in my life thought my hair would be naturally this dark. I've dyed it much darker many times before, but somehow this seems more drastic, maybe because I know most of it is natural. I've never had it this shade before, and I think I actually kinda like it in the moments when I'm not missing the bright colours or getting over the shock.
M thinks it makes me look older and is ultra sexy.

More in vein with the thread, of course to dye it I had to use chemical dye and conditioner so those sections of my hair are kinda "washed" and the funny thing is I really don't like it! They are too slippery, flyaway and feel dry. And they smell awful, the conditioner was so false-fruity scented it gave me a headache. I am used to my hair smelling like nothing!

So, to sum up: My hair is now dark and I won't be returning to shampoo any time soon.

haha, shell. I can totally relate! It's like you didn't even realize your hair felt gross/dirty (for me) before, and then after washing, it's like whoaaaaaaaaaa. It's...so....clean.

Glad WO works for some! Theo, your hair looks great.

Theo your hair looks so different that colour!  Looks fantastic though.  When will you be doing the tv dancing thing?

My mom is all about having "properly" coiffed hair.  I washed my hair in anticipation of going home for my grandma's funeral.  I don't like it washed.  Unwashed I finally had body in my thin, fine hair.

That sucks hh, both about the washing and not liking it and the reason for it :(

Speaking of body though, does your hair go absolutely nuts when you rub in starch? Mine does!

I think it's hilarious.

I will starch my hair now and take before/after pictures.

It goes nuts, but in a good way.  It could get kind of "oily" looking and clumpy.  With the cornstarch it'd just get voluminous.  It was cool, because I could do what you did in the picture - as much or as little as I wanted.  'Twas awesome - like play hair.

I must be doing something wrong because every time I use cornstarch it just looks oily, clumpy and dusty.

Snooki hair.

Minke - The secret is to only coat your fingers with cornstarch and then rub it in at the roots.  When I did too much at once, it got funky.

Yeah, that's what I do but it never seems to do anything so I'll add more and then it'll just make it worse. Should I switch to a different type of starch?

Hmmm... I used potato starch and corn starch.  They performed slightly differently, so it may work to experiment about with what's in your kitchen.  Or I may have low standards <- entirely possible.

Where would I get potato starch from?

I have naturally curly and frizzy hair, would that have anything to do with it?

I had some in my cupboard.  I looked through all of my fine starches and picked the smallest/finest of them.  I wonder if EnerG Egg Replacer or something like that would also work?

I'm clueless about curly hair.  Maybe veganhippie has tips.
