Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

theo your hair looks awesome!

I've not found much to help with that, including dandruff shampoo. I've just been using a Trader Joe's shampoo that happens to dry out my hair less than other things. I've tried water-only washing to see if I only needed that, but it didn't work out so well. Maybe if I did it every couple of days, but then I have the frizzy/curly/dryness of my hair to deal with more often.
Does anyone else have a similar issue and found a non-shampoo type thing to help? I hate the subsequent poofiness associated with shampooing...

Try about 5-10 drops of tea tree essential oil in the final rinse (in a glass of water you pour on and work in), or work a drop or two (no more) into your scalp after washing. I had a weird allergy-thing attack my scalp some years back one summer, which created a scaling/dandruff reaction, and my vet (yes, my vet) recommended this. It really calmed things down. Usually I went with the water-rinse thing but sometimes I'd forget and just massage a drop into wet scalp afterward. Put a drop on your hands, rub together and massage in well.

I swear I'm not a powder pusher.  BUT, it doesn't really absorb oil, it coats it or something, so you get more lift in your hair.  By adding potato starch when it's heavier/flatter, I've been able to wear it down when I've wanted to since the beginning.  I dip my fingers into it, fluff at the roots where I want it to have more body, and wha-laa.

Every time you talk about the starch/arrowroot comb-in it reminds me of that dream I posted on the dreams thread where the cops were combing cocaine into my hair for a sting operation and it gives me the giggles.

Perhaps we are?  *pinky to lips*  Arrowroot/starch/coke.  It'd all work.

hmmm tea tree oil. ill have to check my HFS for that. even if it doesn't work, it can be used for other stuff, right? i once read some study where it turned out to be an awesome antiseptic.

Ha!  Could have sworn you said 'magic coil'  and was thinking 'WTF is magic coil'

My hair is definitely getting better.  I wore it down at work yesterday.  But it's beginning to look better the day after WO wash now!

I think I might order some Lush hair stuff once I use up some products I have. I've realized that the BWC/Nature's Gate shampoo/cond.s I've been using just aren't working well.

I still don't like "having" to use products, but..meh. If I'm gonna have hair, I'll have hair that looks decent.

ha!  I think I may start using shampoo/conditioner again.

Last night we were sitting watching TV and N turns to me and asks why my hairs looking funny.  Was it wet, was it dry, was it greasy.  So I told him it hadn't dried completely (which it hadn't) so he leaned over to touch it and he was like, no it's dry.  I told him to feel the roots to see how they felt and he said normal.
So I finally tell him about the WO washing and how long I've been doing it, and he was like 'oh so that's what's been wrong with your hair'

Ad there was me thinking it was getting better.  I guess it's just that I was getting used to it being mank all the time!

Maybe it's just that it takes longer to adjust, I have no idea, but I came to the point of OMG this is too much, and it has since felt so super clean. I've only washed that once with s and c, and I think another couple times with just shampoo. I think I'll just rotate everything in and out.

Too funny! I've tried a few times to go for one week without washing my hair, and I really wonder what my coworkers think of me... My husband just deals with it! (btw, his hair is a whopping 1/8" long and he insists on washing it every day. Doesn't make much sense to me)

I'd love to go without any hair care products. I've been washing my hair usually twice a week with Dr. Bronner's, and every time I use it I tell myself it will be the last time, but I can never quite convince myself of that...

You were starting to sound pretty positive about it, so I would say only change if youfeel like it's not working!  haha.

The only comment I get from mr oww is that I apparently smell like a baby.

Like you smell like a 'just shit itself baby' or a 'freshly washed baby'?  Because there is a HUGE difference. ;)

aww :' (
Lauren thinks I smell like baby poo!

haha, no, he thinks it's actually just a 'natural clean person smell' but because adult peoples are always scented by shampoos and perfumes and whatever, he associates that smell with babies.

or maybe I smell like poo.

whatever.
