Hair washing
Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!
I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.
P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.
I'm sure you will! There are loads of options, like shampooing sometimes but way less or using baking soda or whatever, still totally awesome.
I used arrowroot powder for the first time yesterday because my hair was all gross after a weekend in the auckland humidity and I didn't want to wash it yet. Worked like a freakin' charm! Thanks for the heads up hh, another weapon in my arsenal. My bathroom cabinet is starting to look more like a kitchen one - baking soda, arrowroot, coconut oil, lemons... hehehe love it.
Down to WO washing every 3 or 4 days. Washing my face with warm water only once or twice a day, coconut oil only if it feels dry and itchy.

Arrowroot powder is frickin genius. ac, if you have any, give it a whirl. The powders haven't made my hair follicles produce extra oil. I think it's low absorbent enough to only work for good.
hrmmm I'm intrigued by this arrowroot trick. I don't think my hair is oily enough to warrant it, but if it were, I'd be frightened about looking flaky/dandruffy from putting white powder in my hair... I guess there's a technique to it....
now I'm feeling like I am extra anxious for my hair to look good sooon because I have really thick/heavy hair, and it's just getting to the length where it hurts my head to have it tied up all day, so usually when it gets past this length I wear it down a lot more. Will have a go at seeing what it looks like and fingers crossed it's not too mank, because my stupid big hair is giving me a headache big time today!!
No trick or technique! I kinda put some in my hand, ruffled it through, gave it a brush, added more to bits that still felt oily. It just magically disappeared into my hair. Could be a handy secret weapon if you want to wear your hair down again. I'm sorry to hear your hair is hurting you :(
Also, when I brush my hair it looks oily, but then I finger comb it in an upward motion from underneath and a lot of the oily look goes away. <- eta: after a week of no powder or WO rinse.
please can my hair decide what the fuck is going on!!! Today it is amazing after a WO wash!
still going strong with the water washing. I barely had my hair tied up at all this weekend and felt fine.
how is yours feeling now, Shell ?
Half of the people I know greet me with HI SARAH HAVE YOU WASHED YOUR HAIR YET?!
Ahaha. Awesome.
I want to dye my bottom again, I havent got it wet since i did a week or 2 ago. I just don't want to have to get it wet. And I need to rinse it out or its extra smelly. Haha.
My hair hasn't been smelly. Yet. That I know of. I WO rinse it once a week to rinse off pollen 'n stuff.
Shell, how's it going with your hair? Have you tried rubbing in a bit of absorbent (e.g., arrowroot powder, potato starch, etc.) if it's still problematic?
hmm, my hairs weird, but I feel like I've reached a turning point and it's getting much better. I am happy to wear my hair down right after a WO wash and for that day, but then the next day I'll wake up and it'll be, um, heavy? I don't know how to explain it. Kinda heavy and feels matted, but then I brush it and it's ok. Not fine to wear down the day after a WO wash only on that day.
I also notice that my hair doesn't blow in the wind like it used to - so not as fine? maybe. Also, I used to find that if I only blow dried my hair without straightening it would be a little frizzy at the bottom of the layers, but now it's not.
I really can't explain what I mean.
My hair is definitely different but maybe not bad, just different. And darker.
I'm not sure if my hair doesn't look greasy after a WO wash, or whether I've just got used to it. I'm still not brave enough to wear my hair down to work in case it is still greasy and I just can't tell anymore!
Hmm, that was an incredibly waffley post but heck, you asked about my hair so you WILL be interested!!! Lol!
PS HH, I don't think and absorbent would help because it's not like super greasy, just 'heavy'
I washed my hair with shampoo and conditioner for the first time in ...however long... yesterday.
I really, really wanted the WO thing to work, but my hair feels sooooooooooo clean now. It's like brand new hair. I guess my hair was totally hating the WO the whole time. : \ I forgot to bring my brush with me, so I haven't had one for many days, and that was making my hair really super annoying (it was making dreads!). I finally got my brush, and realized it's DISGUSTING. The oil from my hair was stuck to all sides of my brush (like gunk), and I just had to throw it away. I've had it for like 10+ years anyway. So, I had to use my comb to get my hair all straight. It took a long time, and a huge ball of hair was sacrificed, but it's good now.
I guess I'm just going to try to do shampoo, and conditioner sometimes, baking soda sometimes. .... I'm also probably going to get it cut soon, I had a special hair trim by P last night. ; )

The ;) makes me curious.

I swear I'm not a powder pusher. BUT, it doesn't really absorb oil, it coats it or something, so you get more lift in your hair. By adding potato starch when it's heavier/flatter, I've been able to wear it down when I've wanted to since the beginning. I dip my fingers into it, fluff at the roots where I want it to have more body, and wha-laa.
It's hard to get a picture of one's own hair, but here it is right now (and yes, I'm wearing my PPK shirt!):

I've been washing my hair every two weeks for a couple months now, with no wetting in between. It's really been fine, and I like that I can be even lazier about straightening my hair now (once every two weeks instead of every week). My hair isn't even very greasy by the end of two weeks because it's normally so dry, so by the time I wash it, it seems practically "normal." The reason why I'm not going longer or going entirely without shampoo is because of dandruff. Though my hair is super dry and frizzy, I get greasy-ish dandruff by the end of two weeks (usually before; and on the flip side, I get dry dandruff right after washing. sigh).
I've not found much to help with that, including dandruff shampoo. I've just been using a Trader Joe's shampoo that happens to dry out my hair less than other things. I've tried water-only washing to see if I only needed that, but it didn't work out so well. Maybe if I did it every couple of days, but then I have the frizzy/curly/dryness of my hair to deal with more often.
Does anyone else have a similar issue and found a non-shampoo type thing to help? I hate the subsequent poofiness associated with shampooing...
Do you use any conditioner, fb?
so I just realied that it has been just over 8 weeks since I last washed with shampoo and conditioner, and I said I would wash after 8 weeks if I wasn't happy with my hair.
Well, I'm still not happy with my hair, but I really feel like it's getting better so I'll wait a couple weeks more. If I'm not happy then, then I'll go back to shampoo/conditioner.
Oh and AC I know what you mean about the mankness in your hairbrush. I have noticed the mank on mine too and I've been having to wash/soak my brush every week or so for a while now.
I soak my brush in vinegar every so often to destroy the gunk. I think I have done it with baking soda too. It works and makes it clean and fresh!
Shell, the arrowroot thing would totally work for you the day after WO washing, it gives a lift/just-shampood feeling to the roots :)
Sarah, what colour are you going to dye your bottom? ::) :-D
In other news:
I went pink!
Shocking windblown photo taken on my morning tea break when I ran outside with my laptop :D
Lovely hair Theo! I miss coloring my hair all sorts a shades :) (i will do so now vicariously through you)

haha, I stopped using my brush about a month or so ago because it was too hard to clean all the oily goopy stuff out of it. Switched to using a comb I have had since I was about four years old, and using it in the shower while I'm washing my hair too. I found it much easier to clean a comb afterwards than my brush.
But yeah, turns out my hair is just too wild, because I snapped the comb in half on the weekend. Made me pretty sad : (
I'm still using the little stumpy half-comb though! : )
I went pink!
ohmygoodness thatlooksawesome!!
haha, wasn't it around this time last year you went pink? Must be your Spring colour! : )
AC your hair looks shiny :)
THanks guys! Yes it was about a year ago haha must be the spring thing! I quite like pink, its a nice change :)
