Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

sarah- LMFAO!!!!! your hair definitely isn't that gross. and you should just always wear your hair like you have it in the second picture.

p.s. you definitely win this thread. especially since at first you called us all gross!

uS ftw!

I still haven't tried the potato starch/arrowroot thing, it sounds really cool...I might have to give it a go next time I hit a greasy patch.

I've learned some things about potato starch.  It doesn't really absorb oil in a way that if you WO rinse it, it's then "good".  This morning I lightly coated my fingers with potato starch and ran it through my hair.  What it does that other powders don't do is to instantly separate hair from each other.  Maybe it's more fine?

I have a question... do any of you have significant others or know males doing this? Is it easier or harder with ultra short hair? And I'm wondering if it has worked so well for me because my hair is very dry... has it had good results for anyone who would say their hair is naturally oily?

MPAGL has said since I started this that he could never do it because his hair is really oily. But he suggested trying it last night, I think he's impressed with mine and intrigued if it could work...but he's also really paranoid about the naturally oily nature of his hair. So I just wondered if anyone has any stories/tips/moral support/encouragement to pass on?

I don't know about short hair, but if he has a longer acclimation process have him rub a very little amount of potato starch in his hair.  It's like instant degreaser.

P has WO washed for a long time now-many months. I think he has naturally oily hair. He likes it. I think it still gets oily, and he washes/showers every day, but he doesn't have any problems with it. It is really soft! He's trying to grow his hair out a bit.

I was told by  my hairdresser not to wash my hair everyday but I dont know about only washing with water.  Does anybody use a shampoo?  Thanks.

i use baking soda usually, and sometimes WO wash.  i have bangs though and i touch them all day long so i definitely feel like im spreading any grease from my roots/fingers down my hair and the water only wash doesnt break up the grease.  baking soda works awesome & makes my hair feel light & clean.  once in awhile i rub a little conditioner into the ends, but never at the root.  if i could keep my hands out of my hair maybe i could stick with the wo wash for longer.

M realised he can't try give up shampoo coz he works in a disease lab and has to wash his hair with antiseptic every time he comes out of containment. Sad!

FLCCOQUI - I used to, but live in NZ so brand recommendations from here probably won't help you... Are you just going to carry on with the one you use but less often? Water only washing isn't as scary as it sounds! Haha

fantastic!  : D

I wore my hair fully down for the first time since August yesterday
And the husband told me it was looking good  : )
I definitely feel like I'm getting closer to being happy with it, really hoping in another few weeks I'll be completely there!  : )

theo - You're the no-wash poster child.  Your hair looks great.

oww - Good to hear!

I did a WO rinse last Wednesday evening.  Since then, it hasn't gotten greasy or needed potato starch or anything.

I'm jealous of these good hairs. I've been doing it for quite a long time now, but still meh. Mine still gets greasy, and I have dry flakes. P has dry flakes too, but doesn't care. Hmm.

:(

I failed. My hair was just really irritating me (plus, I forgot to bring a brush to my current location), and was actually stinking. I used some baking soda and a bit of shampoo in the ends. :\ I did the WO wash for longer than a lot of you all, but my hair just didn't approve. Or user error.

aww that's not a fail!  The water method obviously isn't for everyone and there's no point sticking with it if your hair doesn't agree/you're not liking it.  Hope your hair likes you again sooon! : )

I don't think you failed AC - failed at what exactly - it's not a competition!

I keep liking my hair then hating it!  One day it'll be amazing post WO wash, and the next time it's horrid.
I did a water only wash yesterday and I liked it.  No WO wash today and it is super duper greasy.  WTF!

Srsly hair, either be totally greasy all the time so I know to start shampooing again or just be awesome all the time.  Just let me know what the hell is going on!!

i agree it's not for everyone. myself included.. haha. ac, it's not a fail! success at knowing what works for you. yes.

Definitely not a fail. This has all along been an experiment! To see if it works or doesn't, and everyone is different. So don't be sad or put off or feel fail-y, you gave it a go and stuck at it well and truly long enough for a fair trial! No point continuing something that makes you unhappy, and better to be someone who can accept it's not working and change tack than be miserable :) I think you are awesome!
