Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

first day of washing my face with baking soda!  very exfoliating!
have a zit in the middle of forehead though - sexy!

(you can continue to talk about hair - I will keep talking about my face)

You can also do a "spot treatment" with a dab of bs on zits.

Here's a question for the anti-shampoo people.

Does this mean you do not use other hair products (gel, mouse, spray, etc)?

I could see this working, but I do use hair products and feel I need to wash them out. Don't know if water alone could do that. I pretty much have baby hair, and without product, it looks really bad. Seriously. I use a Giovanni molding paste type thing usually, and sometimes hairspray (also giovanni) if I am trying to look extra cute.

i used to use a flax seed gel but now i'm all natural. no products.

I used hairspray when I washed my hair. I stopped because my hair started to be normal since I stopped washing it.

On the face note, I glob on paste right on zits, I leave it on for a while (sometimes overnight) and then scrub it all into my face and wash it.

I feel like you guys because I haven't showered in a while. I was going to shower this morning, but my dad is redoing my bathroom. WHen I woke up there was no shower head, and no more flooring in there. Uhh. I just braided my hair this morning and hoped I didn't smell too bad.

I've never really used much product in my hair. I know Theo was talking about the hair products and WO washing, so we need an update from her!

I am curious how that is going for her as well, especially with her dyed hair.
Where is Theo anyway?

Last night I passed two hurdles I was concerned about!

I had a dancing event so 1) I had to get my hair into a vintage hairstyle which usually takes about half a can of hairspray and 2) dancing energetically for 5ish hours means ultra sweaty yickyness.

I didn't want to use hairspray because I was worried that I wouldn't be able to wash it out with just water and it would sabotage my experiment. So ever the inventive one I decided to try a concoction of lemon juice and sugar combed through my hair instead, and it worked surprisingly well - I managed to get tidy victory rolls that stayed up all night, though my fringe kinda flopped down a little near the end but no biggie. So I'm thrilled about that, because my hairspray is pregan and I would WAY rather use nice natural (and cheap) kitchen ingredients than that crap in my hair!

Had a shower at the end of the night, and plain ol' water got the lemon juice/sugar out no problem, and seems to have done a decent job on the sweatiness too. I'm at 5 days, and my hair feels a little different, perhaps a bit heavier than normal, but still not noticably oily or lank. And my blue is staying in awesome :D I'm loving this so far, kinda waiting nervously for the grossness to blindside me though!

I've never really used hair products.....my hair tended to look worse when I did use stuff.

yeah, I've only ever used hairspray and such when I used to do dancing shows etc, but never voluntarily!  I hate putting anything in my hair and hate even more how hard it is to get hair back to feeling normal again after washing it out.

I'm debating how to get my hair dye out of my hair without washing it. I don't think I have everything for bleach, and I don't want to buy any. I might just have to wash those sections.

(I bet AC will tell me to put baking soda on it. I think AC puts baking soda on everything.)

I went and got my hair cut and coloured 2 days ago. It looked real nice because she styled it for me, which is easier when you are standing behind the person than when you're struggling with a too-small mirror. But I hate the smell of dye/mousse/spray that she uses, even when I beg her not to use the hairspray, it's a reflex action and she always forgets. So yesterday I washed all the gunk out...definitely needed shampoo for that. It didn't even feel like my hair, and with the smelly junk I even found it hard to fall asleep. It doesn't look quite as nice now that I styled it myself (ie blow dry with my head hanging upside down, which is as close as I can get to it with my liimited movement in the arms) but it feels like mine.

aaargh!  YG I know exactly how you feel.  EVERY SINGLE time I would ask my hairdresser for no product, and every single time she nearly forgot....until I told her 'no' just as she was about to put it on.

I always maintained that's why my hair was in such good condition....no crappy products.

Baking soda would totally do the trick. Water alone isn't budging my blue at all, but I had a bath with baking soda sprinkled in to ease some aching muscles and turned the entire tub blue. So it helps shift bright colours!

I'm here *weak little wave* I'm in the middle of hell week(s) buried under more than my bodyweight in post grad work/exams/contact time, a dance competition in a week and a play opening a few days after that. Running on no sleep or rest and drinking a lot of tea. I feel like hell today. BUT this is the hair washing thread not the moping thread.

It's going awesome for me! I am a day off 3 weeks without shampoo and I love how my hair is :) Water washing it every 2nd or 3rd day depending on my mood, and it's feeling quite soft and silky. Heavier than it used to be, but way more manageable and while it's slightly oilier than it used to be it doesn't feel greasy, it actually feels really nice (I think). A friend of mine played with it for about half an hour the other day and said it felt just fine. I finally "came out" about not washing my hair to people who have been seeing me every day throughout the whole process, none of them had noticed a thing and thought my hair looked fine and were well impressed.

Colour-wise the blue is going strong, though as I said above some baking soda in the bath water was a mistake for the colour. The dyed hair certainly isn't suffering from lack of shampoo and conditioner (was a bit worried about not using conditioner on the bleached parts) but it all still feels healthy.

Annnnd yea in terms of product I have never been one to use it every day either so can't help much there, but the extra concentrated hair-lemonade worked in lieu of hairspray really well! On quite a complicated hairstyle too. Just mix up lemon juice and sugar, maybe 1 lemon to a teaspoon or so of sugar and brush it through the hair you want to style. I'm sure you could put it in a spray bottle too. In my browsing I found a random site that had loads of natural hair recipes, though not all were vegan. If I find it again I will post :)

Wonder if lemon juice with the bicarb would help shift it? And along the way the acid would give you "bubble shampoo!"

How's everyone doing?

I was feeling kinda meh about my hair. Not really improving, just eh, but it looks ok today. I don't have any reason to start washing it, so I'll continue on.

I'm feeling pretty much the same AC.

It's certainly not any worse, but I haven't really seen any improvement in the past week or so.  I'm doing a water wash today, so hopefull I'll see a bit of improvement then.

But yeah, there's no real reason to wash with shampoo so I'll continue.  It's four weeks ago today since I last used shampoo, so I'll give it another 4 weeks and if I'm still feeling meh then I'd probably start using shampoo again.

I hit 4 weeks tomorrow night. My hair is pretty fine, though it might be to do with the weekend of hair lemonade application for vintage hairstyles :)
Totally works better than hairspray still, easy to WO wash out and makes me smell like lemons!
