Cool quote

"One farmer says to me, You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make bones with"...walking all the time he talks behind his oxen, who, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle."

-- H. D. Thoreau, "Economy" from Walden

I don't usually care for a lot of Thoreau, but this reminded me of VegWeb...

OOOOOOH Smoochie likes Thoreau, I'll have to get him this book & see if he catches that line!!! Thanks!

I absolutely love HDT, and having studied him for a couple of years, this quote brings back good memories.  His work is very environmentally infused, especially for that time period, and his work on botany at the time was unparalled.  His essay, Civil Disobedience, has been quoted by Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and plenty of others as a source for their own nonviolent protest beliefs.

I wish I could remember my favorite quote of his, it is really good.  Anyway, I'll leave you with one from Emerson, a contemporary of his.
"'I do not doubt that I deserve my enemies, but I don't believe I deserve my friends."
